I was fortunate enough to hear her all my life in Vienna since the beginnings of her international carreer. I remember when she debuted in the role of Violetta (then a repertoire performance with Carreras - and I think Bruson as partner) and the critics wrote " Miss Gruberova gave a solid performance, but a public used to Sona Ghazarian and Ileana Cotrubas won´t be taken off the seat" Since then I saw her in almost every role and my favorites were Donna Anna and Elvira (Puritani)

I adore her very, very much. I really try to ignore her embarrassing efforts to sing with 72 years her screaming flat Lucia´s and the unreasonableness of not being able to sing this at this age anymore but in her prime (and it was a long one).... she was simply a miracle. A true singing miracle, the beauty of the lucent sound and technical mastery were unique. Like in this video.

Apparently Caterina Cavalieri, the original Konstanze was more than up to the task. In fact, Mozart often wrote arias with a specific singer's skills in mind, this one included.

in 1991 she came to Athens along with Barbara Hendricks to sing in the Herodous Atticus Ancient theatre which has the WORST acoustics in the universe... Marilyn Horne had stopped singing there after 3 minutes her recital had begun and she left :D and Agnes Baltsa had said she would never sing there unless a Plexiglass shield was placed behind her to reflect her sound to the audience (the back of the stage is actually made of ancient rocks which have holes where from the sound of the street (cars etc) comes in)... Not to mention Renee Fleming and Angela Gheorgiou was as if they never sang there (no one could hear NOTHING!). In the Sunday before the recital, Edita gave an interview to an Athenean newspaper where she said two things that exploded in my mind: 1. that Callas very often sang roles that were NOT suited for her voice like for example (hold on to your seat) Lady Macbeth :D and 2. (after asked if she were afraid the famously BAD acoustics of the Herodous Atticus theatre) that she was not afraid at all for her Sound but she was a bit afraid about the sound of the small orchestra that accompanied the Zerbinetta aria she was going to sing (she sang Zerbinetta's aria, Lucia's Mad scene and Linda di Chamounix as encore) (I laughed at both comments and for the second I said: she is about to have the worst surprise of her life)... Barbara Hendricks began the recital and although I was sitting very near to stage I could not hear her at all and at one point a Pigeon that was on the rocks behind her started screaming COVERING HER SOUND completely (I felt so sorry for her)... Then Edita came out (the President of Democracy was present). Her sound was like a Miracle, it was almost deafening.. and as she turned her head from one side of the stage to the other, you could hear her Cone of Sound changing direction (becoming stronger or weaker) as if you could see the Beam / Cone of Sound... she was truly a Phenomenon

Glorious. Yet just three days ago she sang Norma in Prague (with the Casta Diva in G!) and for her age, yes, it's amazing. But Norma was not intended to be sung by somebody over 70. I fear people will remember that instead of this, or her Elettra or Oscar.
@LohengrinO6 жыл бұрын
Well if I had a C6 and D6 at the age of 70 I would probably keep singing as well... now why she chooses to slaughter Norma? I think it is because with all her Gigantic talent she never got passed why she never became a Callas... just like every other soprano wonders the same

Your comment is very interesting, Lohengrin. A friend of mine sang in the San Francisco Opera chorus (plus some small roles). He said he heard Gruberova live and the voice was "big", which I found astonishing. It certainly doesn't sound large on recordings. Very focused, light, and accurate...but not big.
@LohengrinO6 жыл бұрын
Big Big Big when she wanted it... I dont know if that night she had drunk her Red Bull :D but the Herodous Atticous Theatre test is the worst test any singer's Volume can have... Horne, Fleming and Gheorgiou were as if they werent singing... (Horne left 3 minutes after the recital started, she stopped singing and left stage :D)

So sad what she has become today. The saddest thing is, she could still have a respectable late life singing career today, if she chose the right repertoire. Her tone is still pleasant and her vibrato hasnt loosened too much. But rather than sing suitable repertoire, she chooses to murder assoluta roles for which she never had the lower register, and for which her upper register can no longer handle, with coloratura which she now must cackle through. She reminds me of a gorilla now when she goes for the lower notes. The woman NEVER had the voice for norma or borgia or most of what she now sings. What is she thinking?
@LohengrinO6 жыл бұрын
She was as a person unbelievable Ambitious and not particularly intelligent... can you believe that in 1991 when she came to Athens to sing a glorious recital, she said in an interview (probably to defend her future choices) that Callas very often sang roles that were NOT suited for her Voice like for example (hold on to your seat!!!) Lady Macbeth :D I was staring the newspaper for 10minutes when I read that :D

Lohengrin O yes because Toscanini was wrong after he said that Callas was the only one who fit Verdi’s specifications for the role after spending his whole career searching for the right Lady Macbeth!!! Foolishness....
@nathandavis30026 жыл бұрын
Wow. She really said that? Jeez. And of course, as manoli pointed out, we all know what an inexperienced amateur ARTURO TOSCANINI was. Also of not is that miss Gruberova of late manages to have more cleavage in the back then the front! She wears low cut necklines which her descending bustline seems to run from, yet when she turns around theres these folds of sagging skin hanging out. Its awful!
