I had the exact same problem with an X2N in an Epiphone Gothic V. That guitar was naturally very dark sounding and the X2N turned it into pure mud city. I threw an EMG 81/60 set in it and it absolutely RIPPED for Dropped C metal riffage! Definitely no mud after that! 🤘

Funny Story...when I was in high school I drove up to the Twin Cities and bought a Marshall half stack, was pumped! Got back home(90 minute drive), plugged it in and it was no distortion at all. I was crushed. Being young and not knowing shit, I just bought what I saw on Headbanger's Ball. I believe it was JCM 900. Anyways I took it back the next weekend and the sales guy told me to get an Ampeg. I returned the 900 and got the Ampeg SS-150 and the thing slayed. Kept the JCM800 cab with it. This was like 1988.

You definitely captured that Death Metal vibe. A buddy of mine had the 140C and gigged with it. He used an ild Roland 6X10 cab and had one of the best lead tones ive ever heard. He used an EQ and a BOSS Metal Zone through the front. Good ol days. Great Dime tone too.

I’ve got a Randall RG3003H coming in the mail soon and I’m really excited for it. I watched a video Louis Torres put out on the RG300 and as far as I could tell he went straight into the amp in his videos using EMG’s, that thing had the perfect mid-scoop going on and I can’t wait to plug it in!

Ideally want to use a stereo cab or run the outputs into two cabs with the VH-140c - each output has a separate power amp that supplies half of the overall power and those heads were designed to be run stereo.
@DogSlobberGardens-i7f Жыл бұрын
I still have a VH140C 2x12 combo... unfortunately it needs a new power transformer. Anyway, the Ampeg-branded speakers in it aren't spectacular, but when it's also drivving a 4x12 cab, then it sounds great. I played the head for several years, and then the combo for many more. It's def not only good for death/grind; I used it for more classic metal and punk type stuff, and never had any complaints. One fella was so impressed that he asked me after a set what kind of tubes it had in it. He didn't believe me when I told him it was all solid state. He actually went and looked in the back of it LOL.

Its the compression, bro. Not just the comp setting, these am0s are just naturally super compressed in the best possible way because of their design. Thats why they're hands down the best bass amps. But this amp in particular is perfect for sharp, heavy, staccato type riffage. Beautiful. Heavy. Awesome.

Hey brother! Just wanted to tell you (even if I might’ve already said so before) your videos are not only fun and entertaining, but they’ve for for certain helped me get through bullshit in life because there are certain things that mean a lot more when they come from someone who’s been around a little longer and seen much more of life than I have. I admire your content bro I love to lift weights, I love guitars and metal but most of all I’ve become a shit ton more obsessed with fishing and hunting as time rolls on. It’s been a great outlet for me whether I feel depressed or pissed about anything in life. If you take a glance at my channel you’ll find that I do lots of the same stuff you do like vlogs, home videos, guitar videos, and occasional weight lifting videos. At any rate, if I’m starting to get side tracked at all, I wanted to tell ya your videos are always fun to watch and I enjoy the hell out of them. If ya see this, great, I’d ya don’t, no problem. Keep up the great work Kevin!

I am a really big fan of transistor amps, but there is always something lacking compared to tube amps. Usually brutal gain, but lack of body. Using transistor amps for rehearsals now (Hiwatt G200 and Ibanez TBX150h) and they struggle in the room. Excellent for recording as an addition to thicken the mix, but lacking on their own, so better in studio than live.

Had to borrow one of these for a gig in my last metal band when my mesa took a shit. Let me tell you something. This bitch forms horns and hooves when your playing live thru a serious PA. All I was running was a noise gate... this amp.. and a marshall loaded with 75s. Still the baddest amp to date IMHO. I've had Mesas Engles 6505 5150 ect ect ect. Don't run this thing thru a stock ampeg or for that matter shit cab. The speakers are the difference in letting it sing or not. Killer video bro!

It's ironic when you consider that these solid state classics are now getting a reappraisal at a time when modeling systems, which of course are all solid state, are the cat's meow. I've always been a fan of good solid-state amps, even when I still owned my share of tube amps. Even though I owned a Marshall and Boogie in the 80s I still loved gigging the Sunset Strip with my Randall RG75 combo. That thing kicked ass. I also would borrow some Crate combos from a friend. Those also kicked serious ass. I also did some gigs with a Gallien Krueger 250 ML like Maiden were using at the time (1987) and it did the job. I was also a huge fan of this awesome solid state Ampeg combo I would mess around with at Guitar Center on Sunset Strip. I wanted to buy that amp so bad. To this day I regret not doing so. It was a hell of an amp, terrific distortion and cleans. There's a lot of mythology about tube amps, and it's sheer witchcraft, nothing more. A good solid-state amp, mic'd up right, can blow the doors down. You can rock a stadium with a Pignose if you mic it right. I don't find stacks necessary, but otherwise don't have anything against them if they sound good. This Ampeg head in this demo sounds monstrous.
