Mos Def is a Man who started his very first solo album (a #1 album) with a remake of Afrobeat’s Fela Kuti - “Fear Not for Man”. This message is in keeping with that introduction to the world. He has not been changed one bit by the industry: Listen, people be askin' me all the time "Yo, Mos, what's gettin' ready to happen with Hip-Hop?" (Where do you think Hip-Hop is goin'?) I tell em, "You know what's gonna happen with Hip-Hop? Whatever's happening with us" If we smoked out, Hip-Hop is gonna be smoked out If we doin' alright, Hip-Hop is gonna be doin' alright People talk about Hip-Hop like it's some giant livin' in the hillside Comin' down to visit the townspeople We are Hip-Hop Me, you, everybody, we are Hip-Hop So Hip-Hop is going where we going So the next time you ask yourself where Hip-Hop is going Ask yourself, "Where am I going? How am I doing?" 'Til you get a clear idea So if Hip-Hop is about the people And the Hip-Hop won't get better until the people get better Then how do people get better? (Hmm) Well, from my understanding people get better When they start to understand that, they are valuable And they not valuable because they got a whole lot of money Or 'cause somebody, think they sexy But they valuable 'cause they been created by God And God, makes you valuable And whether or not you, recognize that value is one thing You got a lot of societies and governments Tryin' to be God, wishing that they were God They wanna create satellites and cameras everywhere And make you think they got the all-seeing eye Eh, I guess The Last Poets wasn't too far off When they said that certain people got a God Complex I believe it's true I don't get phased out by none of that, none of that Helicopters, the TV screens, the newscasters, the Satellite dishes they just wishing They can't really never do that When they tell me to fear they law When they tell me to try to Have some fret in my heart behind the things that they do This is what I think in my mind And this is what I say to them And this is what I'm saying to you check it All over the world hearts pound with the rhythm Fear not of men because men must die Mind over matter and soul before flesh Angels hold a pen keep a record in time Which is passing and running like a caravan trader (uh-huh) The world is overrun with the wealthy and the wicked (uh) But God is sufficient in disposing of affairs Gunmen and stockholders try to merit my fear But God is sufficient over plans they prepared Mos Def in the flesh, where you at, RIGHT HERE

Yo, listen, the black audience/consumer are a lot smarter and privy to injustice than any other listener. It’s those of privilege with the power to change this shit that do not care, and prop drake up. People love to use the ‘you’re not smart enough/you’re shallow’ narrative but thats played out and tired. The truth is WE KNOW! The truth is generations of black and brown people are overly familiar with struggle, pain and suffering. But we also deserve to clockout occasionally, we deserve music that doesn’t remind us of the battles and wars we are fighting daily. In the early days of drake, women liked his music because he was one of the few that actually spoke to them, not just about them. he made inoffensive music you could play anywhere because newsflash alot of women who love hip hop, cannot relate to the ultra hood or gangsta rap narrative (its why the backpack rappers pushed through), but then his woe is me act turned incel. he did a misogynistic 360 in a need to feel accepted, which actually had the opposite effect. Claiming every hood, jumping on every new wave, hating on your exes as though you weren’t punching up in the first place. Yasin is absolutely right, Drake has no true substance at his core, no allegiance and he does not know himself or care about black people or political justice which is basically the opposite of hip hop.

Drake is not hip hop drake represents the gentrification of hip hop. In 1999 Drake would’ve been laughed at. He has no classic rap albums either… so far gone is a mixtape and take care has more rnb.

[PLEASE don't take this any kinda way; I'm just speaking my truth as i felt it when I read your comment] Wouldn't know; I've been a hip-hop head for literal decades at this point and have yet to purchase a Drake album 🤷🏾 I don't dislike the man, I'm not hating. But I can't justify spending a portion of my hourly wage to further this man's career. Like, the music that I hear on the radio or on the streams is okay, I guess, but that's as far as I will take it.

Be for real people, Drake has always been commercial. I liked his earlier music, but he has never really been hip-hop. Did people forget that he used to sing rap with the auto tune on his voice and catchy beats? He still has great beats, but now he has been trying to do this gangster stuff for a few years, and it is not authentic. He is definitely a pop star.

I was thinking the same thing. I have never compared Drake to a hip hop artist. He never embodied that, He always been pop. I think hip hop was tryna give him grace but got tired of his antics & put him back in his place. That simple...

Drake's imposter-syndrome insecurities get in his way of actually hearing what Yasiin is saying, which is why Drake missed the point & responded with defensiveness like it's all about himself. Drake & his fans take everything personal & get all in their feelings, when what Yasiin said could have been in response to so many other pop names who also make perfectly fine (or even very good) music. there's SO MUCH in the world that has deep importance & needs attn... fun/light music (like Drake's) still has it's place, *BUT* passionate music that truly means/says something is fuckin vital... don't pretend or assert commercialism (pop) carries the same weight of importance. Drake should just be happy that he makes music people enjoy; made ALL the money, has ALL the fame. be happy with that! -problem is, he demands respect on somethin he's not about... he's Will Smith, standin at Florence/Normandy, expecting to be revered like 2Pac. i loved Summertime. as a man, it doesn't move me like : "Technology turning the planet into zombies Everybody all in everybody's dirty laundry Acid rain, earthquakes, hurricane, tsunamis Terrorists, crime sprees, assaults and robberies Cops yelling "stop freeze," shoot him before he try to leave Air quality so foul, I gotta try to breathe Endangered species, and we running out of trees If I could hold the world in the palm of these, hands I would probably do away with these anomalies Everybody checking for the new award nominees Wars and atrocities, look at all the poverty Ignoring the prophecies, more beef than broccoli Corporate monopoly, weak world economy Stock market toppling, mad marijuana OxyContin and Klonopin, everybody out of it" -Tariq Trotter
