A closer look at one of my favorite vintage lenses - Tokina AT-X M90, 90mm F2.5 Macro. This is a superb vintage lens that creates incredibly sharp images, with beautiful colors and legendary bokeh. And it's quite affordable.

That photo at 3:49 is amazing!! I love it. I also have the Tokina 90mm (Bokina) lens in a canon FD mount along with the macro adapter. I love this lens. Not just for macro photography. It is an amazing portrait lens, and the bokeh and background blur on this lens is so creaming and amazing. I'm so glad I bought it a few years ago and I don't see myself ever getting rid of this lens. The way this lens renders detail and how sharp and versatile it is, compared to clinically boring modern lenses is one of the many reasons I will always hold on to this lens and bring it with me every time I go out to shoot. I found your channel looking for content on this lens specifically! Great find! Great video by the way! I love this channel and your dive into random lenses!

Just found this amazing video, i own 2 macro lenses, Leica Elmarit R 100mm f2.8 macro and this "Bokina" master-piece. Both work great at same level of detail, contrast and bokeh but Bokina is my favorite for walk-around since it's lighter and faster, the Leica is for some serious works like products or commercial shots. Great lens and great video.

It's true - I do have quite a lot of great lenses :) I also have the Nikkor 85mm f1.8 and the Minolta 85mm f1.7. I have the Vivitar Series 1 version of this (Tokina manufactured) in the Nikon mount. I agree, this thing makes some beautiful images on modern cameras. I paired mine with a speed booster so I can take advantage of the extra light that would be otherwise lost when working with an APS-C sensor (Sony a6500) and find that it doesn't take away from the sharpness at all. Very versatile lens and one of my prized possessions!

It looks quite similar to older Vivitar 90 mm f/2.5 Macro, but contrast looks better. This Vivitar is unique lens - even modern Zeiss Otus 85 mm f/1.4 or Leica APO-summicron 90 mm have much lower detalization and higher abberations, especially at corners. This is right for f/5.6 and more narrow apertures. Thus, Vivitar has no competitors in repro-scanning applications. By the way, it was developed by company which developed military satellites and Hubble telescope optics. But I don't like Vivitar colors so much as it's resolution. This Tokina looks quite the same in many factors, but have more pleasant colors in my opinion.

I really like your videos as I like to shoot with vintage lenses. Just one thing I noticed in some of your videos on Minolta lenses is that you often say they have an MD Mount. Technically, it is called the Minolta SR mount, as it originated with the SR line of Minolta cameras in 1958. While I understand it is much more common to refer to it as the "MD Mount," I think that leads to some confusion since Minolta MC and SR lenses use the same mount. Anyway, hope this helps.
@VintageOptiks
@VintageOptiks 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I rally appreciate your comment. I refer to it as MD because the adapters sold for Minolta lenses are labeled most often as MD and I want to make it easier for people who would like to adapt Minolta lenses. But you are right, the SR mount is the original line of Minolta lenses. Cheers.

Great channel! I was originally looking at the Sony 90mm f2.8 for some product photography but this might do the trick. Could you explain what a bellows does? Thanks! Beautiful intro!
@VintageOptiks
@VintageOptiks 4 жыл бұрын
Peter Peter Thank you for your nice message. Yeah the Sony 90mm f2.8 is a really nice lens but it’s way more expensive that this one, but when it comes to sharpness you won’t really see any difference. And you don’t need the auto focus of the Sony. Manual focus is the way to go when it comes to macro. I love the Tokina and I would never part with it. A Bellows unit is basically a flexible extension tube - it allows you to change the magnification ratio of your lens by moving the lens further away from your sensor or film plane. The only issue is that when using one you’ll need a lot of light to illuminate your subject. It’s also a bit cumbersome and is best for studio work - not really for outdoor shooting.

Hello , I'm new to photography and macro photography is a great discovery for me . But first of all bravo and thank you for your excellent videos , thank you for giving your time and your knowledge with so much passion . Now , as far as I'm concerned , I'm about to receive my Tokina 90mm f2.5 AT-X Macro Lens Minolta MD from the USA , an excellent opportunity for me when you don't have much money . But my ignorance may have made me make some mistakes , I may not have made the right choice . For example , concerning the version of the Minolta MD mount that I am to receive , although it seems that I can use the lens on my Canon 70D APS-C via an MD-EOS adapter , this will not allow me to focus to infinity for other photographic activities (information that I did not have) . Please , can you tell me if I'll be able to do macro photography with the configuration I'm reporting ? If so , what is the maximum focusing distance I would have ? As I don't have the Tokina extender , will the use of extension rings allow me a 1:1 ratio with the same image quality ? Also , is there a solution for the loss of infinity ? I'm worried because I'd so much like to do macro photography , but also some portraits or landscapes with this vintage Tokina that I like so much . Thank you for your answers and advice . Take care and best regards from Reunion Island .

Hello and thank you for your kind comments about my videos. Glad you enjoyed them. There are two options to choose from for this adaptor. There is a Canon EOS Camera to Minolta MD Lens Adaptor that features a glass segment in the centre of the adaptor. And there is a Canon EOS Camera to Minolta MD Lens Adaptor option that has no glass element and is used for close up and macro photography. In your case, you can use both - the one with the glass element will let you focus to infinity and the one without will let you do macro work. With extension tubes you can definitely reach 1:1 magnification and beyond. No need to have the extender from Tokina. I hope this helps. Cheers!

@@VintageOptiks Thank you for your kind feedback ! I'm going to get an MD-EOS adapter without lens for macro use and an MD-EOS with lens to have access to infinity . Are the latter less demanding or is it a question of the equipment used , that's the question I'm asking myself . I'm going to take the Fotodiox Pro MD-EOS , it seems to be of good quality , the K&F shop doesn't deliver to Reunion Island ... Thanks again for your advice . @@VintageOptiks Dear friend , Please forgive me if I abuse you a little , but do you know if there is an adapter ring between a Minolta MD mount and an Olympus OM mount ? I have the opportunity to try a Tokina AT-X Macro Extender with an Olympus OM mount . Are these the current Micro 4/3 frames ? Thank you for your patience and kind help !
@VintageOptiks
@VintageOptiks 6 ай бұрын
Hello. Getting an Olympus OM macro extender for a Minolta mount lens is not going to work. Because then you have to adapt that to your Canon and these 3 mounts have different flange focal distances. So I would stick with getting the adapters for Minolta mount and simply get extension tubes if you want to shoot 1:1 macro. But if you’re not experienced with macro photography it’s actually best to practice with just the lens which will give you 2:1 magnification. Once you feel comfortable with that setup then you can add extension tubes or even bellows. Macro photography is a lot of fun but it does require some practice. Another thing I will advise is getting a very sturdy tripod! Even the smallest vibration can cause motion blur in your camera, so a good tripod is essential. Oh, and regarding the adapter with the glass element - I’ve also heard that these adapters do cause some loss in sharpness, but I have no experience with them. I’ve only used the ones without the glass elements. Cheers.

@@VintageOptiks Thanks a lot ! I will follow your advice and abandon the Tokina macro Extender . (Now , just for my own learning , I would have been curious to know whether there is a single MD-OM ring or several options) . So if you have a little time to read me , for macrography I have a preference for studio work and I have a very stable FM5S mini tripod , a 2-axis rail assembly , a 3-axis BENRO Pro head , an 8-inch tablet for viewing , a MINOLTA BELLOWS IV BELLOWS , lots of light and a MINOLTA 50MM 1.3.5 - 22 + its 1:1 ring . Indeed , I'm having quite a hard time but I'm hanging in there ! For outdoor macro , I use a TAMRON SP 90 MM AF F2.8 DI MACRO . So much for my amusement dear friend , with the worry that I still have a lot to learn . Thank you for your good advice . Best regards from Reunion Island .

I will not recommend to use extender/converter, use an extension tube !

I’ve actually had great results from the original 1:1 macro extender. No loss in quality and it works great. But obviously it’s not needed, since extension tubes works great too.

@@VintageOptiks My guess it that watched side by side, photos taken with extender/converter and extension tube, the latter will always be better.

The extension has optical elements inside, but it is NOT a teleconverter. These extra elements are only for correctional purposes and integrated in the optical formula at 1:2 to 1:1 scale.

what mount would you recommend for this lens (in order to adapt to Sony E): MD, F, FD ...?
@VintageOptiks
@VintageOptiks 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, the mount doesn't really matter. If you already have an adapter for any of these mounts just get the lens in that mount, so you don't have to buy a new adapter. But if you don't have any adapters yet for your Sony camera I would recommend the Olympus OM mount. And the reason for that is - you can get a helicoid adapter that can push this lens to focus much closer especially if you don''t find this lens with the 1:1 extender. I made a whole video about these adapters and they are great. And the Olympus one extends the furthest. Here is the video I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWqZo6WZa5ydfNU

@@VintageOptiks one more question if I could as I am in the market for this specific one. I do have many vintage lenses and it has never been a problem. But in case of this 90mm, many sellers point out that there is a tiny piece of dust inside, even those rated as in mint condition. Is it something to worry about? e.g. it could be a start a fungus, does not it?

@@Andy-rk9mu Hi Andy, I wouldn't worry about the tiny piece of dust. Basically all vintage lenses have some dust because that is just what happens with time. I'm sure that all my vintage lenses have some dust particles in them. And as you mentioned some of these dust particles could carry fungal spores with them, but as long as you store your lenses in a dry cabinet you'll never have to worry about fungal growth. I keep all my lenses in a dry cabinet and I never had any issues.

I think the 80s might be a bit of a stretch to call it "vintage" I still consider vintage lenses from the 50-60s.

Thank you! And sorry about the inflated prices. Unfortunately I have no control of the free market. I simply want to share my appreciation for vintage lenses with other people.
