When we see journalists like Variety and NPR and PRIDE making up the 90% it feels less and less like we are the ones being represented, but the people on the outside are. On Steam, it's struggling to maintain 5 digit player counts. Not that that makes it a bad game, but I think a lot of people are overestimating the impact it had. The campaign was super short, operations mode (the main PvE content after finishing the campaign) had next to no content, and multiplayer was lackluster.

Not to mention that these media outlets are no longer reliable on their opinion on game quality. Games like star wars outlaws, concord, and veil guard show how media outlet are extremely biased on their judgement on their reviews. Instead of reviewing games objectively based on factors that actually matters like gameplay, story, graphic, pricing, etc, they rate them subjectively based on things that don't matter. Oftentimes, these media will care more about who made the game instead of how the game is

Here's what's happening, they want DLC to be considered a "game" because their next intention is raising the prices of DLC, which is already far too expensive as it is. They've raised the price of games, next step is raising the price of DLC and they'll repeat the process until it causes a crash. If you don't think this is happening go and look at beloved INDIE TITLE Factorio which released a DLC at the same price as the base game. Yeah, it wasn't Triple A games that did it first, it was an indie game. That same indie developer also refuses to put the game on discounts. People have this idea that indie developers are gonna "save us" from the money hungry AAA developers, but as someone who is an indie developer and is in those closed off forums and servers, trust me, they aren't here to save you, they're here to take money from you just like the AAA studios and I've seen the conversations and they love fantasizing about how creative they can be at taking it.

The dev of Factorio released a DLC for the same cost as he sells it, but the base game alone is half the price of modern AAA games and has multiple times the value and quality for those of us interested in the game. It's more than fair compared to the complete slop that AAAs have been trying to feed us. No one is asking to "be saved" from buying products. We just want those products to be good and worth the money they are asking. Factorio, DLC included, fulfills those requirements for us.

I lost my shit over two things, first being the 90% jury vote power, wich is self explanatory besides one point of contention i don't see discussed is that it will lead to doubt, even if a game wins that the majority would have voted for, it will create natural doubt in the system, because before even if people were salty over the winner, it was innately understood that's what the majority voted for, you can call them the dumb vocal majority, but as a matter of fact their votes were more and that was the end of it. This time it will be such Drama regardless of the winners. The other being, the expansion on the GOTY. Most Elden Ring fans i saw, not counting a sliver of a slice of unhinged people that literally haven't played a single game for a decade other then fromsoft games. Most fans myself included do not like the idea of a already established title winning the GOTY award. While some people argue that Witcher 3 Expansion won Best RPG therefore what's the issue, it's revenge time but i argue that's not even in the same ball park as GOTY and the comparison does not make sense to the degree but sure, put it on the table, a 2016 award argument in the 2024.. We should have moved forward not backwards. My hope for GOTY would be Wukong, it doesn't have to be for everyone, but i think the sentiments of the why's is shared by most, that it's a first title of a new studio, that it brought a so far unseen culture in the west to the main stream of the west, that people have been able to experience the Chinese Lord Of the Rings thru the game, and most importantly that every aspect of the game wheter it was up to your taste cannot be argued it was a labor of love for the project. I personally find that Wukong was robbed from a few sub categories it deserves to be in like the Score, and the visuals. Does it have to win them ? No, but to not be even included even without the cinematics is just rude but with cinematics included it's just a crime. Now, i do not think it has to win every category, after all being nominated is a prestigious title alone, it will appear in the searches years later and will boost the reputation of the creators. I just think it's odd it only appears in two categories (Action combat and GOTY, nothing else even tho many have finished the game with the sentiment that it was a gorgeously made game with plenty of heart) where as some of the games appeared in over 5 categories.. No shade on Astrobot or Balatro but it's a bit much the glaze this two game gets, games are for fun and this two achieves it perfectly but they get score, they get the visual category, they get, indie, small studio, first title, and GOTY nominations.. That's just nuts. I'm happy that it's at least there but just the message all of it sends is misguided i feel.

May have to do with the fact that things get a little wonky once you start trying to put things together. What counts as DLC? It can range from skin packs to entire gameplay expansions like SotE, so do we just call it the Expansion Awards? Then what about DLC that just adds stuff to the same map? What about soft-sequel DLCs? Story fixes like Mass Effect 3? And from that point forward, ask yourself, why not make an award for the best mods for certain games at this point? DLC, Downloadable Content, is far too broad in scope for it to have its own category. It'd be like a "best deleted scene" category in Hollywood

The ONLY exception I'd accept is a stand-alone expansion. If you could play Elden Ring's DLC without the base game, I'd accept it being nominated. And I've got 500 hours in that game, not including the untracked seamless co-op hours I've got too. But it's just another reason why I don't actually care about GOTY awards anymore. Playing Devil's Advocate while drunk: the Geoff's game awards is a 10 years running show, who raised from the ashes of an older game awards, from a time where gamer culture was snubbed and bullied by a more powerful and established traditional media. The fact that he tries to approach this same media is a reflection of this history. Of course you can't change culture and contracts on the fly, just because now gamer culture is becoming main stream and the old media is starving. Every aspect of the Game Awards of this year screams at this problem, that they are build around gathering approval from an increasing irrelevant media industry, an industry that is now running after the gamers. It's like a cartoon chase, one that they are loosing. The media outlets nominated popular games and safe bets, while not understanding what are games and what people who care about them want. My opinion is that is time to find another game awards, build upon the values we like now. There is no industry standard, we already lost other game awards, there is no tradition, nor history to respect. Let the best win, in the battle of awards.

*People just suck at seeing the bigger picture with the Game Awards.* I do disagree with people saying "It's just a show" or that "It doesn't matter who gets the award" and that speaks a lot that these people, should be looking at it in a bigger picture. If a good game that we want to win, a Studio that we like- want to win, a Direction of the Gaming Industry that we want them to see, is what we do there. When a Game wins an awards and by the votes from people, it speaks to them that what we're saying above. We're saying we want more of this game. We want more of this type of game. We want more of good games. We want more of this studio. We want more of this type of genre. We want this direction of games. That says a lot for us and why are you people not seeing this? This is the bigger picture. This is what we should see. While there are many "technicalities" that was nominated like "DLC is not a Game" and stuff, it still says a lot of what we want. We want more DLC like Shadow of the Erdtree. Big expansions. We can vote for the games that are not Live Service. We can also vote HellDivers2 to say this is how we want from Live Service games but it's hard to say that when all they see is just the surface. So think about your votes if you want to steer it that way. Think just a little deeper. Even if it doesn't show them what we really say in our votes, some people, some studios, some big investors, might see that and that's should be the goal and the bigger picture.

Just a reminder that all nominations are done by their own committee and the winners are 90% decided by their committee (their rules, not mine). While I agree with your sentiment, the truth is the nominees are chosen by their own internal biases and politics, not by actual merit. Yes these two can regularly align, but not always, and even if they throw you a bone with some nominees, they decide who wins and can change the rules whenever they want to suit their needs (as evidenced by the inclusion of DLC in GOTY). The users voting only accounts for 10% of the total score too, so the only time our voice matters is if there is no clear winner decided upon by them, and we just end up being a tie-breaker. Alot of people are saying that Elden Ring DLC might win the GOTY for the sake of not letting the Black Myth win the award because they freaking hate that game.
@dezmundtv962Күн бұрын
if we're going to allow DLC to take GOTY then why do MMO's and their major expansion's (FF14 Shadowbringers in particular) that are much larger and better than the average game, never nominated that year? MMO's have their own category for that very reason, we drew the line there because those expansions are not games. Thus MMO's have their own category so they can still be awarded despite not being eligible for GOTY. i could agree with Erdtree being nominated if it's a standalone game but it's not, i's Elden Ring top to bottom, a bonified expansion. DLC should have it's own category. Elden Ring getting two GOTY awards two years apart from another, somehow doesn't make any sense lol. One game getting two GOTY awards would be a first time ever. In my opinion, a game only ever get's one shot at GOTY during the year it's released, if we can keep adding dlc to a single game then watch that game get nominated every year, how quickly do people making games start demanding that DLC shouldn't count when their games get snubbed every year because of DLC taking over? it's a slippery slope, and one we cannot entertain or it defeat's the point of having a GOTY category.
@heideknight77828 сағат бұрын
Adding remakes and DLCs to the potential candidate options for the GOTY race is not just dumb, but also a wrong sign for the industry. We already get way too many remakes, remasters and all this additional content stuff (DLCs) each year, because it is easy money for the developers who then do not have to make something groundbreaking new. Therefore the Game Awards should reward "original, new and creative work" that is not in a greater scale copy-pasted from another game.

This has been an issue for a long time now. Even Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (probably the most successful expansion/DLC ever) received a nomination for best RPG in 2001, which it lost to Baldur's Gate 2, and Witcher 3: Blood and Wine actually won best RPG in 2016. I was too young to care in 2001, but I was critical of Blood and Wine being part of the awards, and remain critical of Shadow of the Erdtree being included.

That Gamer article was an interesting thing to hear. Talking about principle and blaming consumers for the lack of it. Blaming consumers for toxicity when gaming media has been the cancer causing it. Blaming gaming companies that don't hate their customers for having their heads in the sand rather than saying that for the companies that openly hate their customers and lose money at amazing amounts. Their immediate follow up about Geoff Keighly made me think of the Joe Rogan video Asmongold watched yesterday with this game journo acting the same as Brian Stelter, vaguely insinuating that if Keighly doesn't do what they want then he will be cancelled, as if any amount of people care enough about anything these people say for that to happen at their whim. If he keeps his mouth shut and doesn't speak about against the consumers that 'will not wash this time.' Mind you he is clearly giving them more than they are due with their jury appointments and is making them think that they are important so maybe he is scared of them some.

A few comments from my personal experiences (I haven't experienced all the games): 1.) Diablo 4 should never be nominated for anything positive. Path of Exile beats it any every way for that category. 2.) I'd like to hear why DLC cannot be nominated. My guess is... DLC can be short? Or what? If the DLC is a solid 20+ hours, I see no issue. Would it really have made a difference if they released that as a separate game on Steam rather than it being in the DLC category? It's simply a setting put in by the developers by Steam. If it's big enough, it counts. The argument in this video about it being less challenging that building a new game from the ground up, there are many games that reuse assets / use a large chunk of an already-developed engine / are an entry in a series, meaning they didn't "risk it" to make totally brand new IP. Just think of Elden Ring DLC as "Elden Ring II." It's all semantics. Chill. 3.) I like that an odd roguelike card game is getting some attention. Often, it feels like big corpa are using formulaic recipes to pump out reskinned clones. I love to see something fresh nominated for anything. 4.) I don't understand why the fighting game award has so many smash-brother-likes nominated. Everyone knows those are not fighting games. That's like calling any game with a gun in it a first-person shooter. Those are their own genre. 5.) Thank goodness that DATU did not receive a nomination. Everyone knows it was a game that betrayed all of the established lore and style of the series. And no, I am not talking about it having THAT in the game. I'm talking about how A.) The game softens the edges of complex drama produced by unpleasant realities that DA never shied away from: Classism, religious strife, slavery, racism, etc. B.) How characters act unnaturally against everything that established lore would predict. It would be like a game about the messiah where Roman forces and followers of the Torah all just "get it." Less drama. Repetitive combat that is too easy. Odd level design likely inherited from its multiplayer roots. Disney graphics alongside Disney dialogue. To sum it up: It's as if a new movie came out from a beloved rated-R series, and alas, this one is rated PG13. A real shame. The game was a flop for DA enthusiasts. And for those new to the series, all the edges they softened made the game worse than it could be. For a new person to the universe, they even stripped away many ways people could learn the lore featured in the older games -- stuff like shopkeepers not being chatty. Yeah, those just give no lore now. That's just one example. And can we now shush about the grand conspiracy in regards to it? Yes, a few journalists gave it an undeserved 10/10 basically in objective terms. A much better game could have been made WITH THE EXACT SAME STORY and similar characters. Thankfully, no one nominated. Conspiracy over. Just a handful of bad gaming journalists... nothing new though. It's a joke that games can't get below a 7/10 on IGN, and it has been for the last decade. 6.) You know how people were worried "journalists" would not Wukong through? I think the exact opposite thing happened. The game is decent and not worthy of awards, but afraid of negative reactions fueled by a conspiracy theory, it made it on the list. Everyone whose opinions I trust (both my friends and game reviewers) said the setting is cool, that boss fights were good, and the rest of the game was a bit of a bore. Only the people who turn a few embarrassing articles trying to cancel a game into an elaborate conspiracy theory are rooting for that game. People who likely watched their favorite 20+k viewer streamer vibe with the game. Brothas, those people are likable, because they are chill and happy. Yes, people caution not to shoot the messenger precisely because people do shoot them. And a 20k-viewer streamer is not trying to be shot. It's in their job description not to be critical. Do not adopt their opinions without thinking it over yourself and without reviewing several sources of review by people greenlit to give a negative comment or two as THAT is part of THEIR job description. Any category where it is up against Elden Ring DLC just represents a wasted slot, because Elden Ring DLC will win for sure since it is a superior game. And before you throw at me the, "But brah, it sold a lot of copies" argument, we all know total sales, while a heuristic of what might be a decent game, is totally different than a guarantee it is superb. Just imagine any DECENT game pumped out by a corporate recipe that satisfies a huge swath of people by design. It will be missing that bump up in quality that actually results in FEWER sales as the average Joes detached from an identity of true gamer might dislike the more niche, superior game. 7.) For a VIDEO GAME award show, I don't understand why people playing video games or voicing roles are getting awards. I like to think of a video game award show as awarding video games with awards. I couldn't care less whose voice did whatever. 8.) No one cares about VR. Just get rid of the entire category. The entire thing was an experiment, and it turns out, people don't want to stand up gesturing for 6 hours straight over chilling and gaming with a controller or mouse & keyboard. It's a lot like those Google glasses except a tiny bit more successful. Same thing with mobile games. That's just trash that casuals play. Profits/revenue have nothing to do with the quality of a game. Hell, Palword made a ton of money since streamers picked it up. It was easily one of the worst survival resource games I've played in the last 5 years. I felt like I was doing the exact same thing over and over and over. Oh, but big profit! Big streamer recognition! So coooool, NOT. 9.) I think it is fair for erudite thinkers to count toward an award over some average Joe. Wukong even being on the list proves my point. Perhaps, it should be 70% expert 30% random schlump. 90-10 is a bit much. But brotha, if a person is a C student, they are a C gamer. It is what it is. Stay in your lane, gamer. Let the people who STUDY gaming have more impact. There is no case where people who are casual about their thinking, not studying much at all, will think better than those that study hundreds or thousands of hours. Again, Wukong on the list is a farce. Totally decent but not beyond that. Everyone I respect agrees. It was only put up out of fear of the grand conspiracy -- a conspiracy that really boils down to "oh wow, some gamer journalists are leftists and outweigh political messages to the essence of a game." WE KNOW. They exist. Who cares? Find new gaming experts whose opinions you value.
