Concord should be STUDIED on HOW NOT TO DESIGN A GAME. The character design is SO BAD and this goes way beyond idpol - the characters have no energy whatsoever and the realistic faces combined with the goofy outfits makes them look like they're a bunch of costume-wearing cosplayers rather than mercenaries. The amount of brainrot required for these designs to survive the 8 year development of the game, because no one at Firewalk Studio or Sony with any authority had the marketing sense, knowledge of color theory, or EYEBALLS to realize they needed better characters. This is like releasing a new Pokemon game and all the pokemon are just recolors of Rattata and expecting people to be interested. @billbillson67792 ай бұрын
@@Rescel1 It's both, but it's mainly the characters. I say it's mainly the characters because the open beta had abysmally low numbers so nobody was interested to even indulge in a freebie weekend. And while team shooters have a crowded market, Marvel Rivals had a beta and the same freaking time as Concord and there were tens of thousands of concurrent players for that game! Then there's Valve's Deadlock which is a MOBA and not a hero shooter but it's very similar and it's an invite-only play test and it's had hundreds of thousands of concurrent players! And yeah, Overwatch currenly sticks around because nothing better has shown up in 8 years. But people would jump ship if something did. Concord's gameplay was even worse than Overwatch's, zero positive word of mouth from the few people who did play it, but most people stayed away because one look at that character roster and saw boring garbage.

A few weeks ago, the investors cancelled the project, with the biggest reason being, if not the ONLY reason being Concord and how badly it failed. They were scared that making a live service game was going to be too much of a risk. Funny thing is, our game was nothing like concord either. I don't know whether our game was going to be super successful or not, but pretty sure it would have had more than 400 concurrent players on steam, or maybe I'm just biased. TLDR, Game devs are making games for bots. AI is not self aware, but it is self replicating. It goes both ways really, if the industry look at Call of Duty, Fortnite, Pokemon, Overwatch, etc.. mediocre games at best and they are the absolute leaders of their respective segments, that sends the twisted message that fans of those specific genres are willing to eat shit, simple as that, they don't care about quality. But here it comes Atlus developing a vastly superior Pokemon for decades (the Shin Megami Tensei series) and they never really draw the massive Pokemon audience, so this argument that quality and excellence can "steal" away consumers... in this market? Well, that is wishful thinking. Every entertainment industry follow trends since forever, hell, Mozart followed trends lol this is not a "sin" by itself, it is what it is, human nature. The current trends are so ugly, the MCU "humor", the fake "inclusivity" and "apathy" to gain "likes" on social media, etc.. that makes it seem like trend chasing is something repugnant, but it's something natural. Remember when every game in the 00s (even Zelda) was "edgy" and "dark"? Well, the emo trend affected the pop industry in the west, in my pov the emos were harmless, but most likely that was the case because there was no social media at that time... the repugnance does not come from the trend itself, social media is to blame. The internet is the best human invention ever since electricity, but social media was a really ugly byproduct

With regards to sending a message through a great game, what comes to mind is NieR Automata. Not only were the characters extremely attractive, the story made you think. It made you introspective about the human condition as you watched machine lifeforms try to emulate the long extinct humans sometimes in comical ways, but most times in the most diabolical ways possible. And at the end of the road, greatest message of all came from the simplified shooter game that hijacked the credits roll. As NieR's creator said, the minigame was designed to be unbeatable alone. You NEED the assistance of other players who sacrificed their save files in order to provide assistance to other gamers who have reached that end. Yoko Taro's message was, that humans even the most introverted ones, need one another to keep going and surviving into the future. Then at the end of that mini-game, you got to choose as well; keep your save file, or sacrifice it so that others may also complete the game as you did with the help of other players.

Idk why westerners can't even think like Yoko Taro did. Like they have the most advanced technology in the gaming industry, more people that work for the company, but still fumbled so hard with most of the japanese games (I didn't say all but there's plenty examples of it). Maybe because it lacks of emotion and dedication that the developer has or they're making game just for the profit without thinking bout the market nor quality. It's such a shame tbh.
@yllare2 ай бұрын
@@hamizanhamm This has no academic bearing whatsoever just my personal observations, but I like to think that it has to do with what I refer to as the "craftman's mentality." The Japanese attitude for the most part is to dedicated themselves to a task practically body and soul whatever it may be, creative or destructive bordering on obsession. Maybe it's influence of Buddhism and Shintoism combined? I'm not sure, but based on observations, this is the trait that officeworkers, artisans, creatives, service people, etc. have in common. Yoko Taro is, for better or worse, on the extreme side of this spectrum haha. But from obsession comes a unique perspective and introspection that gives birth to works like the NieR series. I won't presume to lecture the west on how they live their lives, but seeing as how they're floundering chasing the big bucks, perhaps it's time for a perspective change.

This is the single most important, relevant, salient point in a video filled with a lot of them. The Market: What reason do people have to play your game other your competitors? Firewalk: I don't understand the question. I think another big problem companies have in engaging with the Live Service market is that they fail to internalize the simple fact that people don't have infinite time and infinite money to invest in an infinite amount of live service products. They see a successful product, attempt to identify trends, invest stupid amounts of money to ape those trends, only to come to market 4 years later to appeal to consumers of the product they saw 4 years ago. Concord is the perfect example of this, since their feature list and implementation is suitable for a game that might have wanted to compete with Overwatch at launch, while failing to account for the rest of the market. They've been in development long enough to see the rise and fall of Lawbreakers, the rise and fall of Battleborn, the rise and fall of Anthem, the rise of Fortnite, of Valorant, of Overwatch 2... Need I go on? It might've been sad if they released in July 2017 and failed due to Fortnite's launch. It might've been sad if they fell off at the same time as Paladins, losing out to Overwatch due to Activision Blizzard's larger resources. Instead, they released in 2024, with absolutely desire to consider the market they're releasing in. This product failed because the people in charge wore blinders for 7 years and did absolutely nothing in that time. Of course, it also didn't help that they chose an aesthetic that appeals to a smaller demographic, but this game wouldn't have succeeded if they chose something people actually wanted to see; just look at how long Gundam Overwatch lasted for.

Despite the video being really good at analyzing why this title failed to captivate the gaming community, saying: ''it's great to see big pulishers fail'' I only think of the developers that are the most affected by all of this. Multi-billion dollar companies take a small hit, and dev companies get shut down and there are massive layoffs every year due to those failures. I'm sorry, but it's sad, not gratifying to see them fail. You might argue that: ''the devs are just as guilty because they made that game, they should correct their wrongs''. I just think people pick at shit with the woke bullshit. Now I agree about everything saying this game is bad but outside of concord I think people take that” this is woke bullshi” in gaming too far. People gonna find what they looking for if they search hard enough in anything

@@Eezylon Its not about being a problem. Fat ugly black chick is not a problem either tbf. Even she (or wth her pronouce was lol) being a postergirl is not a problem to the some extent. Its not problems but just a sign. A sign to stay out of that crap, whatever actual problems it do have inside. Simple and easy. Its not a perfect logic by any means, but If you use that logic you wouldnt miss too much while saving time and money. Its like, idk, doing Reinmann summing instead of proper integrating: simple, easy to understand and use, and calculating error would probably not be that bad.

*Literally every sane gamer* who watched the trailer saw this coming. How did Sony and Firewalk not? The most logical answer I can think of is that they fundamentally don't understand how gamers think or how to market to us, but it doesn't make any sense that Sony wouldn't know how to market a game considering they've done it perfectly several times before. Their trailer looked like it was designed for a superhero movie or animated series, not for a game. I don't remember them showing a single second of gameplay in that trailer, and I didn't even realise that it was supposed to be for a game the first few times I saw it, and even after that (until this video) I assumed it was some sort of story-driven RPG, not a hero shooter. To me, it was just "that annoying advert that's way too long, with those GotG knock-offs at a bar". When marketing a game, surely showing off the gameplay should be the number one priority? Isn't this just common sense? Apparently not... It's like they tried to do what Valve did with Team Fortress 2's "meet the team" videos, while forgetting that Team Fortress 2 was based on a game that thousands of people already understood and enjoyed playing, that Valve also heavily promoted TF2's gameplay and mechanics before and alongside the first meet the team videos before transistioning to primarily narrative/character-based marketing a few years later, and that TF2 (at least at the time of its release) filled a unique niche rather than being released into an already-saturated market.

as someone who studied business administration for some good years, this is one of the few time that i see a company in gaming fucking up and actually say "yeah, its understandable how they fell for that error" because from the general business vision, its an ideal process "find client, study client, make product", social media isnt a bad place to study a possible client in general, BUT 8 years is a fuckton of time in the games industry, every month a new "best game appears and fades", not only this, but the gaming playerbase in genral, that goes from the guy that buy COD every year but dont go deeper than this, to the person that plays 10+ hours a day, so to be able to find where you are going to aim is harder, and trying to make something for everyone will be refused by everyone, because is too much of a difference from the surface to the core, not only this but the market is oversaturated, specifically in the "game as a service" market you can count this by at least 10x, and i can count way more reasons why its hard as fuck to make a successful game now, but everything comes back to one point, the businesspeople responsible for the gaming part of sony are people that are competent as administrators, but they arent people that have a deep undestandment of the gaming market.
@hurka.design2 ай бұрын
9:25 - That's partially true, but not for everyone. The majority of players play old live service games, because of the sunk-cost-fallacy. "I've thousands of hours and a lot of money into this, I'm gonna keep playing it."
