My problem with Ciri isn't that she's the mc or even that she's a witcher, but that she seems to have lost the Elder Blood powers, swapping them out for witcher powers. That doesn't work. Witchers are inventions. Creations of humanity that bear an ENORMOUS cost to create. The Elder Blood is a naturally occurring phenomena, which Ciri was born with. Her switching to witcher powers for some reason is like a soldier throwing away his assault rifle so that he can make use of a blunderbuss.

The truth is is there is a valid criticism of the Witcher game. One Siri has elvish blood they do not get old like humans JRR Tolkien. Who created the Alvin race in its language as stated that Alves do not get old like humans. To the fact that in every isakai Japanese program that have elves state it as so if an elf is 300 years old they're considered a youth. And in The Witcher books witchers are young boys cuz they're the only ones that can handle the damage that is done to the human body. And the percentage of even the voice surviving is very little. And with naughty dogs space game we've seen this particular character in the last of us too. And I get my hair cut really short every month and this is not the way you hold an electric razor to cut your hair. So if they can't get that right I can just imagine how much bull crap is going to be in this game.

17:37 not to be the "Aktcshually-guy", but Ciri was basically THE "Chosen One" of the Witcher series. She could teleport and one-shot almost everyone in the game. Ciri's combat was easy mode because she was super powerful. Most of her combat is her quite literally cutting down men and monsters in half in a single swing of her sword. This is kinda why it feels strange, to me and a couple of friends, that Ciri would be the follow-up character to Geralt. She is stronger than almost anybody in the series, and in this trailer she feels weaker.

Not a Witcher fan so I didn't play the games much, but seems like CDPR should've gone in a totally different direction considering they mostly concluded Geralt's arc in Witcher 3, right? Taking into account the size of the Witcher's world, they could've started a totally new story with a new cast of characters in a place on the opposite side of the content. And called it something other than "The Witcher" while setting it in the same universe a la Half Life and Portal.

So if gamers are not happy with this protagonist in Intergalacic, being a female, non-Caucasian and with a GI JANE haircut (dear lord the world is ending 🙄), what protagonist design would be acceptable these days? I understand not wanting to be lectured but seriously, you’re going to criticize a game and assume it’s going to be a lecture based on a character design that you saw for maybe, what 90 secs? Have we come “full circle” now and is it time to go back to the white male nordic look (sorry Geralt)? Would that satiate gamers’ appetite to “see themselves” in games? Personally, i haven’t a clue what i would relate to in a character based in some far off future and floating in space (that is other than the Adidas and Porsche ads, ironically). Also, playing games is my escape so i don’t really want or need to see myself in the game world in order to be immersed. I mean,my daily life doesn’t involved going around killing things and walking/running back and forth for stupid reasons. Also, Astrobot looks nothing like me yet i enjoyed the game. So gamers want politics out of games but yet, here we are complaining about the character design without having a decent understanding of this character. I’m guessing the character is profit-motivated (for survival i suppose, or more), which I’m sure a lot of people can relate to these days (i can). I'm willing to admit that there are probably many games out there that don't entirely deserve the hate they get. However, this is what happens when trust is broken. This exactly. Once trust gets broken EVERYTHING gets criticized. And right now the biggest problem is western developers. Tales of Arise is quite literally a planet of slaves rebelling against their oppressors and questioning how they really should proceed forward and reflect on their own prejudices. JRPG's have had these topics at the forefront and yet for some reason every time a new Atlus one comes out, people act like its the second coming of Jesus in media tackling harsh topics.

At very least 7/10 Isekai animes and mangas have this type of story with some small deviations here and there and when core of the story isnt focused about that theres ALWAYS character arc or substory about muh slavery,discrimation of different species(humanoid furry presenting "beastfolk" and sometimes demons are often inserts for that for example) and such. Wipe your nose, and listen carefully. No strongman, mountain-toppling giant or muscle-man is going to be able to parry a blow aimed at him by a dracolizard’s tail, gigascorpion’s pincers or a griffin’s claws. And that’s precisely the sort of weapons the pendulum simulates. So don’t even try to parry. You’re not deflecting the pendulum, you’re deflecting yourself from it. You’re intercepting its energy, which you need in order to deal a blow. A light, but very swift deflection and instantaneous, equally swift blow from a reverse half-turn is enough. You’re picking impetus up by rebounding. Do you see?" "Mhm." "Speed, Ciri, not strength. Strength is necessary for a lumberjack axing trees in a forest. That’s why, admittedly, girls are rarely lumberjacks. Have you got that?"

Rehearsing Intergalactic: I don't typically play the kinds of games that people have been getting burned by, so take my opinion with that in mind. When I saw the trailer, the obvious branding didn't bother me. To me it didn't come off as shameless product placement but rather as a clever way of informing the audience of the setting. Because of the branding, I know this is meant to take place in our own universe but far in the future. It also tells us about the character, because Porsche is a luxury brand and her Sony products are decidedly retro, so she's probably good at what she does and has a certain aesthetic taste. I could definitely be wrong, but I think we're judging way too soon. The only thing that bothers me about the trailer is the character's attitude, but maybe she'll have an arch.

We would love to be wrong, to be shown that we're just judging it early on appearances. I've had that happen a couple times before. The problem for Intergalactic is that we have very little trust left for the industry at large. When you've seen major IPs put out new games that look and feel nothing like what the fans love about the IP as many times as we've seen in the last few years, it becomes a question of "are they using this thing as part of the story, or are they just incorporating this to flashbang me with nostalgia for a thing I like to sell trash?" I don't even really think Ciri is ugly in W4... She's older, sure, a lot more mature. But they didn't bash her over with the fugly stick like so many other franchises have done. As for her "not being a witcher" I mean she was about as close to being one minus the trial of the grasses. I don't know the rationale why she can drink witcher potions -- none of us do at this point. But I'm totally down with Ciri going full Witcher. The Witcher games have always taken the source material as a reference to the world. It's not like the games are the books personified. The books are a history for the games to build on -- they always have been. It just so happened the characters and the world building in the books set the games up for success. Ciri is awesome. It’s a reference to 80s movies like back to the future that had a lot of product placement. They knew people would be mad and I’m sure the whole game won’t be like this. I think it adds to the retro feel if anything, looks very 80s which is what they’re going for. Edit: also Porsche has a reputation of being associated with sci fi. They were one of the first brands to think of and design cars as spaceships in order to catch people’s attention. Many of the vehicles in the cyberpunk genre were inspired by old 80s and 70s vehicles like Porsche. It is also why Johnny’s Porsche 911 in cyberpunk 2077 is the only real car in the game that cdpr specifically design with the company itself. They are famous for being THE most futuristic looking car brand out there.

While I wouldn't grant Porsche as the first one to do it, as other brands of automakers have done the 'era of rocketry and sci-fi' at different points (Audi also went on a sci-fi bender in the 90s in many movies with preferential placement), I do agree with the bulk of your statement. Look at what happened to car design in the 60s. Almost every brand got excited at the jet age where a relatively remote possibility of space travel engorged the entire industry, and Many brands had jet or spacecraft elements in their design language. Chrysler, Cadillac, Chevy, Ford, etc. In this instance, we're having a 2nd round of interest in the expansion into space where modern companies have many fingers in many pies. Hell, my eyeglasses are Porsche designed, and I don't wave flags for brands on Anything. I just chose those frames as I liked how they looked on my face and they let me have round lenses as opposed to everything else with square or rectangular. Short end, product placement can be done well if it fits in the space presented and people will take it as product design for the worldspace and not an ad, but I understand the concern on how it can shape things going forward. Kojima has also had a long history of inserting real-world products into his games, and for the most part, people didn't take that as a boundary crossing move. Just off the top of my head, there was a collab with Puma, several eyeglass frames, CalorieMate, iPod, softdrinks, a noodle thing I can't remember at the moment, Triumph motorcycles, Sony Walkman. I'm sure there's more but you get the idea.

@@C-M-Eyes and I don’t even consider Porsche to be one of the famous ones from the 60s to go sci fi. Cadillac are much more famous for that imo. The world is picking up on it and adjusting according to that ooooor they paid Sony a shit ton to emphasize their futuristic feel. 17:24 is an interesting point that I saw in a different way in the trailer. The W4 follows a similar narrative structure to the W3 one, except Ciri ends up failing in her cause because the gir she was hired to save ends up getting lost in the end, just in an unforseen way. If things were as blatant and unsutble as a handful of people online want them to be, she would have been effortlessly successful at every turn. She would have just girlbossed herself into success. I'm also of the mind that some, if not most, of the negativity about Ciri feels unbelievably forced and that crowd would be better off being more welcome to examples like this
@JajsjNsbsvshana6 сағат бұрын
Exactly, she failed, if anything she sucks when compared to geralt in terms of witchering. People need to just wait for the game to come out and find out WHY she took the trials. @postmortem66306 сағат бұрын
"if not most, of the negativity about Ciri feels unbelievably forced" that's not ciri, that trailer is not the character, it's just a replacement for geralt because a witcher has to headline a witcher game for IP reasons and they didn't want to take a risk with moving away from a witcher due to creative bankruptcy
@JaidynReiman6 сағат бұрын
The way I see it its a very hamfisted message. Ciri may have failed to save the girl... but the situation makes no damn sense. Its just pointless tragedy for the sake of it. There's no situation where the girl would just be stabbed by her people when she returns. I don't know where they got that ludicrous notion from. Yes she was returned to her village which could be seen as a failure of duty. They wouldn't kill her, they'd drag her ass back out there to ensure she fulfills the ritual. Once they discover the monster is dead, however, there's no damn point anymore in her dying. Her death isn't just a situation that should not have happened; in any realistic scenario it would NEVER have happened unless Ciri failed to actually defeat the monster. Its an unrealistic scenario that would never have happened just for the sake of having a tragic end. The point of the ritual isn't that the girl dies, its to protect the rest of the village. That's the point. Killing her themselves doesn't do a damn thing to protect the village. Its an illogical conclusion.

I can't speak for others, but for me, I don't mind her as a protagonist. She is quite fine and it would be very nice to explore more in depth the powers we got to play with in the previous game. My problem with her is that she was drinking what looked like a witcher potion...she is not a full fledged witcher and she never will be. Even if she could pass the trial of grasses, no one alive in that universe knows how to perform it. She would have to travel to the past to get it done, and then good look getting an old witcher to perform the trial on her. That is my gripe with her. If they wanted to focus on her, why give us old mechanics tailored to a witcher? Give me new mechanics tailored to a person wielding the elder blood. We could all be wrong and those weren't witcher potions. The trialer didn't have enough detail and this could be a possibility. If that is the case I stand corrected. But for now I remain skeptical and I am not excited about the game so far if they aren't respecting the pre established lore.
@JBlochNielsen3 сағат бұрын
Personally I found that she drank a potion (and it working on her) intriguing. It showed me a mystery. How could she do that? Did she go through the trial of grasses? But she couldn't have could she? If she did how was that achieved? And what if she didn't how does the potion work? And what about Ciris motivations here. She was trained as a witcher and looks up to Geralt but it seems clear that Geralt would not want her to follow in his footsteps? Did Geralt do the Geralt thing and encourage her to choose for herself, knowing she would choose to become a witcher despite his hopes for her? Invoking "lore" as a reason for concern is a waste I think. It closes doors on what could be great stories. This is especially true when said lore is kinda vague. Different kinds of strength. Plenty of orphan-kids and other foundlings were turned into witchers, even though your average peasant could beat them up. Geralt is like 6ft tall and ripped, of course he's stronger hence why Ciri has to put her back into it and compensate with magic. She for example drank water of Brokilon and was unfazed, while it knocked Geralt out cold. Did 6-year-old Ciri have more brute strength than Geralt? Maybe a word like "resilience" would've been more suitable but I thought the meaning was obvious.

Concords was a massive leap of a cliff. The baby steps are the subtleties that games feel uneasy about found in witcher 4. There is a stink. Oh and i must disagree that the developers are to blame. Naughty dog change may have been from closer to the top with Druckman. What we see more often is an infection started in HR. From there scandals are brewed, ideologies are reinforced and eventually leadership is squeezed out. You think amir satvat is helping heal an industry or spreading the disease. Its the accepting nature of gamers that has allowed this to happen. Unlike a court we cant approach with innocent until proven guilty mindset. Yes stop pre-ordering. Thats a given. Beyond that calling out ever miss step is also important. Warn developers about what you dont want. From there its up to the studio to either change what they are doing or sell us on that concept. Understand i Hate woke crap in games but they are not the problem. I honestly believe there is a place for such games. The issue is a mindset. A mindset that gamers are a thing to be solved, controlled and parented. Gamers allowed ourselves to be coached and guilted into believing it. Its why we've suffered the likes of games like concord. Why franchises we loved are used as skins masking other agends. A problem we're facing across fandom as a whole. Our mindset needs to change. We are far too accommodating to an industry that is failing upwards. The reason stop pre-ordering is universal advice is because its the smallest step in returning things to its natural order. We the customers have the money. we are the only ones who decide if a product succeeds. Act accordingly

CDPR exceeds in respectfully treating the Polish literature and the Witcher as a creation of A. Sapkowski.
@johnryan44542 сағат бұрын
CDPR has a licensing agreement with Sapkopwki that allows them to develope the games as they see fit. Ciri's story should actually be finished according to the books, but in the W3 ending i played, Geralt gives Ciri the silver sword she wants, so obviously that was a setup for W4. Personally, i love the Witcher world CDPR created and didn't read any of the books until W3. Frankly, i thought the books were boring and a bit silly. Ciri riding off to Camelot with Sir Gallahad to end her story seemed bizarre to me.

Product placement has been everywhere *since* the 80s and before. Every time you see a watch, a car, a phone, anything, the manufacturer has bid more than a rival manufacturer for that placement. So in the case you mention Porsche has outbid Mercedes, Ferrari etc. That's how it works and has always worked.
@diana.winter5 сағат бұрын
@@FishsterExcept that it doesn’t always work that way. The Cars movies did not receive any money from Porsche. Forza pays to license the use of the cars in their games, which is why the games get delisted when the licensing agreement expires. There are countless other examples.

18:35 One lore thing to point out in here... while she has elder blood abilities and that they are great... the magic overall in books has its limits that not even elder blood could overcome... like it is more physics in nature than how in most western fantasies magic works. Like for example her elder blood only gives her only one power that gives her an actual advantage over other magic users in the witcher universe(s) - and that is time, space and dimensional travel. Other mages have to use lengthy incantations and create circles, draw a lot of power from outside sources to create portals while time or dimmensional travel is unobtainable for most mages even. But aside from that for normal spells, she still has to learn incantations, train casting spells, draw the energy from outside sources etc. So in my opinion there isn't much nerfing they have to do for it to be compliant with the established lore while keeping her gameplay challenging and not have her be overpowered. She technically only ever had more sword fighting training with witchers and time space and dimensional travel, her magic studies were short lived. So with that said they would have to explain why she wouldn't be just jumping around time periods and dimensions... or to do the opposite and explain why she would.

I don't trust Neil Druckmann as a storyteller. He knows vibes and getting a good performance, he doen't know about character and plot. Remember: this is the guy who thought we were too stupid to understand that revenge is bad, so he had to tell us a dozen times. That thought making us play as a character would grant us sympathy for that character. Until proven otherwise, I remain convinced that his head is planted squarely and firmly up his own ass.

What they are not free to do is make that product and then blame the customers when it fails. If TLOU2 was a stand alone game without the popularity of the 1st game to prop it up, it would have seen much less success than it did. The gameplay didn't evolve....it was largely the same as the first which wasn't great to begin with. The story hard carried the first game. Its gameplay was extremely repetitive and that's a common criticism even by fans of the games . Abby was a very unlikable character even as a villian. The story of the 2nd game was highly criticized as poorly written even by more progressive video reviewers like Skill Up. Is that "evolution" or just poor writing disguised as evolution bc there is a trans character in the game? If you look at the conversations around these games they aren't celebrated by ppl bc they are great, they are celebrated bc they check boxes. Boxes that are oh so important to some ppl when the rest of us just want a great game with a great story and well written characters. Not characters that are put in the game bc "it's important for the message and the cause". Is that evolution? Sure thing.....

You give CDPR waaaay too much credit. It's literally impossible to make Ciri a witcher _and_ respect the lore of the source material. It goes beyond traditional gender roles, it is a biological impossibility in the story's world for her to be a witcher. It doesn't matter how well they finesse their retcons or how "deep" their narrative is, no one is going to swallow it - game deserves to be DOA.
@AnExcellentChef2 сағат бұрын
There is no hard and fast rule about that. Although I might not remember the books as well as you so if you have a relevant passage then I'm all ears. Closest thing I can think of is a mention that they tried it once with a few girls as well but none of them survived so they stopped trying. By the same logic lightbulbs should be impossible since it took more than a handful of tries to make it work. And if that's what qualifies a game deserving to be DOA for you, boy howdy do I have bad news for you. The previous games had asspulls way bigger than this. Look at Geralt's resurrection, look at Alvin, look at Ciri fucking somehow "defeating" the White Frost as if it's some entity you could fight and not a natural phenomenon. Might as well ask her to stop the tides or make sunset not happen.

So I am going to go out on a limb here and say the product placement is an homage to Akira, it was a big thing with Akira like INSANE. Not only that, the companies that were shown in Akira had to approve of it from my understanding and which is also done in the Blade Runner movies and is one of those things which can be on brand depending on the products advertised. But it also has the off putting effect like it does for you. If they're smart they won't plaster the screen with brands in every scene and asset in the game. Akira and Blade Runner did it intelligently and beautifully. It's there but it's not selling you anything.

Regarding the criticisms of Intergalactic and the product placement. I think Adidas is the most egregious, I think the idea of Porsche making personal starships in this universe goes kind of hard. I don't really think of Porsche so much as a straight up advertisement, because - realistically - how many gamers are going out and buying Porsches? How many have that capability? I'd argue it's a vanishingly small amount - and anyone with that capability isn't going to make that decision because their name is slapped on a fictional spaceship. You mention 'unmasked corporate greed' but I think that could be the vibe. '80s retrofuturism is kind of based on how corporations come to run society - e.g., Bladerunner. Slapping Porsche and Adidas logos is a quick way of signifying that to the player without having to loredump about the rise and fall of businesses and the mergers and acquisition that make the 'Scharf Persönliches Raumschiff' the corporation it is today. Especially when it seems as though, from what Naughty Dog have said, that the events of the game take place entirely on the moon she's going to - which was lived on by those Sempirians(?) so, it's doubtful we'll see much product placement. But, I wouldn't say it's going much further than, say, Kojima putting brands in his games like Monster or J-F Rey. It's also worth noting, since you mentioned that they aren't content with money from season passes and microtransactions and whatnot - generally, Sony games (live services notwithstanding), don't have much in the way of added consumer costs. GoW Ragnarok, as an example had one story DLC and it was a free add-on. Ghost of Tsushima had one expansion and a free multiplayer add-on (which was better than most live service games). I don't really understand the issue it is that people have with the main character. She's bald and not wearing make-up? I mean, she's a space bounty hunter on some kind of personal vendetta, I doubt she's overly concerned with making sure her hair looks nice being alone out in space. For the same reason that you value the realistic notion of Ciri having to use her bodyweight and slash twice, why does that not get extended to a woman on her own out in space with limited resources having a shaved head? Like, is she supposed to have time to go out and buy shampoo and conditioner? From where? Is she going to a space hairdresser? Or are you expecting to find books about it - since she'd had to have learned to do it herself at some point otherwise. In addition, what attitude are you expecting her to have? As mentioned, it seems she's on some kind of personal vendetta against this 'Five Aces' crew - is she supposed to be bubbly and jovial? Wouldn't you just call her a Star Lord rip-off? Wouldn't that be even more like the Concord characters people hated? Besides, we've seen one conversation she's had and you're jumping to major conclusions. But what's so unrelateable? She's black-asian and seemingly driven. It feels like it's all somewhat veiled. Just say what it is specifically that you're looking for instead of hiding behind 'oh it's cringe girlboss' or 'it's preachy'. Why is it preachy? What's preachy about her design or wanting desperately to find Kumail Nanjiani? What do you want your video game protagonist to be? It's funny that you'd call Jakey the GOAT, because I really don't think he'd share any of your concerns about the character based on what we've seen so far. I would actually imagine he'd be a little put off by the almost chud-level arguments you're putting out. 'I know this is about activism' - bro, you don't even know the devs. Just say what you want to say and don't hind behind 'it's not about playing as grizzled white dudes or hot chicks' because it sounds like you're not going to be happy unless it's one of those. 'California art school dropout' actually listen to yourself - you just said that about someone, who actually exists, because what? The colour of their skin? Their motivation?

I think you went way too far on the "product placement" rant. It's called immersion. IF it takes place in our world, the absence of any logo on things like vehicles and shoes would be more of a break of immersion if they were missing. Personally I think that if it gets the developer more money I am all for it, if done well. Don't plaster ads everywhere but if the vending machines actually said Coca-Cola instead of some made up version, i think it would add to game rather than take away. I could see some problems though as this would make historical or fantasy games less lucrative.
