Yes Illidan did some sketchy and even a few outright evil things... all towards stopping the Legion. For that he was imprisoned in a dark hole ( IIRC it was enchanted, so he got no food or water or sleep ) for 10,000 years. They only let him out after all that time because it turned out he was right, the Burning Legion came back and they figured he would fight against them ( cause someone who was treated like that for so long is obviously going to fight on your side once proven right ) Hated at the end of Legion when he went along with the Titans to keep an eye on Sargeras he was closer with Velan than his brother or Tyrande....who both heard his final heartfelt messages to them and both just shrugged it off.
