Crane gunners as Cathay take him out real quickly 2. Just have to have the units to beat him. 2 of those in every single one of my armies makes lords, even archaeon, die so quickly.

There's plenty of ways of finishing him off quickly surprisingly enough. I personally find mulching him in an unwashed horde of chaos trolls whilst dealing out buffs and debuffs to be quite satisying

Lucky indeed, I remember being like what the hell am I going to do in my gelt campaign dealing with him, then just like vlad. I pretty much pulled skaven tactics and blasted him with every ranged weapon I got, after I dealt with his army. Whilst using some poor Spearmen to tie him down.

With a title like Magister, it makes sense they aren't great fighters, but why not give them extra skills that buff his troops or reduce upkeep. That seems fitting.

Magisters do have this, are we playing the same game? They have AoE buffs for attack, ranged, and defense. Their fantasy is supposed to be flying over their troops issuing out "commands" like a real redline lord. I don't get why they're hated. At least they have abilities unlike the two dozen dudebro lords like norscan chieftains or tomb kings.

it's really not hard getting them to shoot. Just zoom in to the model and look, if it has a clear line of sight. Also ensure, that no other unit is touching it.

Yeah the vampire coast can be nearly unplayable with how often units just refuse to shoot at a specific target and then other times shoot well beyond their actual range.

In WH2 I besieged occupied Khemri as Clan Angrund. Grimgor was defending it, he was unbreakable. After I inflicted the army losses, I bring inside the walls the cannons to shoot him from a distance. When there were no more cannonballs left, I sent 3 units of Bugman's rangers to shoot him from 3 different directions. I run out of ammo, he had 100 hp left. I charged my heroes and my lord at him, activating all abilities and runes avaiable. Ironhide didn't take a single dwaf life that day.

@@RealKangarooFlu I just hate that the dragon blooded lords are tied to a single harmony, where the magistrates can be used to balance out the harmony. Also I tend to not like wizard lords because you only get so many skill points. I'd rather have left over points than not get everything I wanted. Plus I just want them to work on a thematic level, especially in the lantern. Maybe they could give a HUGE harmony multiplier to a magistrate in a balloon because he's got such a great view of the battle and can give out the best orders 😅

@@jacobsampsonis7782 you can recruit both yin and yang shugengan lords. Yin has way better traits but kinda shit magic, tho the summon is nice. Yang gets better damage spells and a bound Earthblood, but only one semi-decent trait.

I had a similar experience once while fighting Vlad. He had so much resistance as well as a ton of regen from all his passives that he basically decimated my entire army and just would not die. I ended up having to cheese him with a single chariot unit, just cycle charging him until he was dead.

Iirc, since the experience gain from battle changes, wounded characters still gain xp. I lostand won a few battles in which my immortal or legendary lord got wounded but when they came back, after 5 turns, i could spent the experience they gained in that battle on skill points. So i dont think it matters that much anymore if you wound the enemy lord or not. But perhaps wounded lords gain a bit less xp now, idk.

My personal favourite way to deal with anti large cav: -charge your lord in by himself. He will receive a bit of damage, but that's completely worth it. -then charge in your lancers from both sides. If a unit has 16 anti large but gets charged by a charge bonus of 70, they will still completely melt. It is even better if you can intercept the enemy cav with your lord while it's trying to charge another cav, because that way it will also barely hit you. I learned these cav tactics by doing a dog only campaign, any tactics that can keep dogs alive will also keep cav healthy. And if you flank a cav unit on both sides with a unit of shock cav, it doesn't matter how elite the enemy cav is it'll melt before the charge bonus has disappeared. Only exceptions would be the really elite monstrous cav, because those models are chonky. For them I would recommend cycle charging.

Had the same disaster battle as cathay vs grimgor. Only difference was that i didn't have any canons so grimgor ended up with nearly 1k kills because he just would NOT go down until he reached his healing cap.

I've been using grand cannons more and more instead of fire rain rockets. They're so good against large entity targets, which you face a lot as Cathay (ogres and trolls and such), and they do a decent enough job against chaff infantry.

I honestly find that the crossbows and crane gunners take out large targets way more efficiently along with a mostly halberd front line. Fire rain rockets in this battle would've absolutely shredded the army before it ever reached the front lines, though I suppose he probably got the cannons out of necessity trying to beat back Grimgor.

@@josephtucker8456 when it comes to taking out groups of large targets nothing beats a good ol canon. As they one hit entities (if there are only let’s say 18 in a group that’s a big chunk) plus when the canon flies trough. So if you hit a cav unit with one volley on canons from the side (3/4 shots hitting) it can almost wipe out the whole unit IN ONE volley. Thus they are super effective vs cav and also stuff like heavily amored ogres with a bigger range than crossbows etc.. So yes i agree crossbows and crane gunners can be better yet at the same time canons can also be better (also taking out trolls and other regenerating units in one hit thus capping their regeneration is also a huge blow to their effectiveness). So one or two grand canons in your army will never be a bad investment.

He does get a sky junk mount, but that also leaves him extremely vulnerable to missiles and enemy fliers, due to low speed, weak melee stats, and large size

Day 37 of advocating for Lord Magistrate. Granted, he's not as potent as Dragon Blooded Shugengans in overall terms, but if you want a spellcaster, get an astromancer or a hero of yin. Magistrate adds some nice utility to your army and actually fits the lore quite well. He's supposed to be a leader and a protector, which is why you get a lantern mount, for easier movement along your ranks and being outside of melee range. All I'm saying is that I for one enjoy the diversity and different use rather than "another generic fighter lord with a monster mount".

He's a support lord, and acts like a proper general, commanding his troops. This, and many other vids on this channel, perfectly display my biggest problem with the Total War 'Warhammer' series in general(versus prior 'historical' titles)... The RPG mechanics are so utterly broken & unbalanced that you literally have to cheese so many mechanics to be able to stand any chance. It becomes no longer a war game, but a game of tricking the cheating fucking AI so that you don't have to fight actual pitched battles. It's the main reason I prefer the historical total war titles over the warhammer ones. CA just did a terrible job balancing the RPG elements of the game, and half the time you are punished hard for playing the game as it is intended. (ie. vanilla pitched battle without cheese tactics like luring impossible to defeat enemies away, or using all missile & kiting, etc.) Obviously no disrespect to you, you are just playing the game in the only way that you can win and you do a fine job at it... But that's kind of my problem, that these are the tactics you do have to use to stand a chance because of how terribly the 'balance' end of the WH series was approached. At a certain point Grimgor shows up on your border at mid late game, for the 3rd-4th time with 2-3 40unit WAAAGH doomstacks 3-5 turns after you last wiped him & you're just like "fuck this game... this is the best CA could do balance wise?" I understand it's just the nature of the game & kind of part of the whole experiment with the series, but speaking personally, as far as how fun the battles are (which is a big part of the game obviously), the experiment is a failure. Love it thematically & IE is lots of fun in itself campaign map/content wise; I mean who can argue that isn't a feat worth praise in itself, but that said I do think the gameplay (ie. battles) suffers greatly due to the LL's & other extremely unbalanced & cheesy RPG mechanics that were not kept in check. Again, speaking personally, I have had way more fun with battles in Rome, Rome II, Medieval II, Shogun etc..., where battles/units are more balanced, lords can die permanently, no ridiculous OP units that never break & have unlimited health, etc. IMO the first time you have to chase a fucking LL with missile units for like 20 minutes on FF just peppering away at him and kiting him so that he doesn't wipe your entire army on his own, you kind of see the experiment for what it is and go "ohh...". At least that was my experience.

So many people submit disasters or battle situations where they make outrageous claims, like, "I played it 41 times and couldn't even get close to winning! [Insert lord/unit/monster] killed every unit in my army no matter what I tried. It's unbeatable!!!!111!!!1" Legend then plays it and wins with relative ease, and the army is in good enough shape to continue quickly afterwards. Which means players submitting these things are both full of it, and simply unwilling to try anything more than yolo-charging, or hammer-and-anvil (because that won in all of the historical titles with very little thought or effort). Legend is willing to spend 20+ minutes in a battle doing what the best generals throughout history did: cheese, exploit weakness, set traps, outmaneuver, win. SIDE NOTE: I have still never gotten the move exploit to work. No heroes or unique regiments in the army, recruit in my own region, save, load...nothing. No extra movement.

the way i deal with him every game is Ambush->Autoresolve. Works on all difficulties, just ambush him by the settlement he usually pops out at so you have that garrison as well, and the AR has never failed me.
