Fantastic interview from an Irish legend. Leeds ruined my younger years by being so good. I love the way John stands up for Revie and the way he looked after his players. Also I remember the way the FA treated him after he quit - a disgrace. No one turning up at his funeral says it all. Johnny is right - finishing runner up is an incredible achievement really - best of the rest.

exactly there record was exceptional stands up to greatest teams in history. just they was unlucky league was so strong. other era they probably would have did four five leagues on bounce

Its one thing been a great footballer during your career, but with Giles he successfully made the transition from player to pundit almost effortlessly. His analysis is always spot on, he criticises when it needed unlike MOTD pundits.

Not only did Giles enjoy a legal victory v. the David Peace book but Dave Mackay also enjoyed one (v. the film version). As a Hollywood lawyer called Fred Leopold used to say, "If you have real people as characters they can have lattes and muffins but they can't say, 'Let's go for a f**k in the bushes'."

The 1960s were weird. Ipswich under Alf Ramsey won promotion to Division 1 then won the league the next season. Liverpool won promotion then the league two years later. Leeds were promoted and won a few years later. Man City were promoted and won 2 years later. Derby were promoted at the end of the decade and won a few years later. So 5/10 promotions from Division 2 won Division 1 in a short time after promotion. Other than Leicester it is unheard of since Leeds in the early 90s and Blackburn, both winning a few years after promotion.

Can`t agree with John about the Leeds players being better than the England ones in 74 , Colin Bell, Keegan, Alan Ball, Dave Watson, Shilton, Clemance, Emlyn Hughes.

Big reputations but Sir Alf couldn't get England to the world cup in 74 despite many highly regarded players. That was why Don was offered the job in the first place. Then Don failed. England every so often is horrible in qualifying. Oddly enough having a great qualifying campaign is the outlier not the norm.

I always thought. That 1974/75. In those days had a squad say 15 players. But the team had run its course. So many players left 1975/ 76. It was a closed shop. End of the day clough won and he was right. Same with Man Utd.Old squad busby but took on frank o-Farrell. Amazing interview with him on you tube absolutely. Leeds was a great side but run it’s course. Like every team. Shanks had it right. Kept introducing one player every year Now I am going to get pellets for this !!

I really want someone to ask Giles "What do you think you would have won if ye had given Clough a chance?" I think he was probably unfair to Clough's career as a player, most seem to rate him very highly until he got injured.

Clogh only had success with Taylor beside him, and Taylor never went to Leeds with him.

@@olaf1191 Same number of League cup finals (three, won two) robbed of a EUFA cup final, Runners up FA cup. Whilst English clubs were banned from Europe, hoovered up the cups that were put in its place. Very rare out of the top four. All without Taylor and I suppose in fairness the final relegation.

@@olaf1191 That has got nothing to do with it. The players revolted against Brian Clough due to his perceived arrogance and willingness to make wholesale changes with the team, such as bringing in his Derby captain John McGovern. He was moving too quick for the players and many became unsettled. I don’t think they tried there best for him, that was the reason they lost a lot of games, not because Taylor wasn’t there, it was an act of mutiny which succeeded. Furthermore, Clough produced some great players such as Pearce, Webb, Sheringham, Walker etc., and decent top 8 teams at Nottingham Forest for a good long spell after Taylor left in 1982. They did not have money yet still enjoyed relative success. However, Clough was undoubtedly better with Taylor alongside him.

@@graemechristopher4008 In fairness unless you are going to clear out the entire squad immediately alienating them is a bad idea. A clear out takes time and they still have to perform for him. So that is Brian making some mistakes. Taking a successful established squad is different from taking over a done little squad as well so they will respond differently. Brian did the exact opposite of winning the squad's respect to manage them. Maybe he would have been different with Peter Taylor, maybe Taylor knew Brian well enough and what Brian thought of the team that it was clear Brian would dig his grave with those players. However great Brian's achievements were; and they were great, there is a reason they called him 'Old big head'.

bang on to be runners up takes bit of doing. do people realise how many leagues game yer got to play for such a standing and that you have to win 5 six big games or more remember them days it was replays, to get a final leeds record was exceptional stands up to greatest teams in history. just they was unlucky league was so strong. other era they probably would have did four five leagues on bounce

Good interview. Would have been stronger if it had discussed the allegations of corruption, bribery and match-fixing made against Revie by Stokoe, Sprake, McLintock and others.

It has been discussed,Gary even went back to Leeds, to debate it, and he was the only 1 that was convinced it happened,but I think he has an agenda,he was hurt,to balance the story,Don many times got out of bed in the early hours to get Sprakey out of jail,he was involved in a major car crash where a young girl had many scars from it,so Sprakey was no Saint. I got to know Don when he lived in Kinross,so can only comment on my dealings with him,he was a good pal of Ben Dunne+every year 15 boys were brought to Leeds for a weeks coaching,all expenses were paid for,to this day nobody has ever done that for Irish kids.

Great player great knowledge but come on , Clough was there just over a month or so what would he be like if he was there a couple of seasons to rebuild , we will never know, wrong club wrong players bizarre appointment, also Clough no great shakes as a player ya joking score about 40 goals a season for about 7 years , ok 2nd division but still incredible, then broke his leg unfortunately we will never know

Clive Allen did it in the top level,but nobody would highlight Clive as a great striker.Look at his goals return.And look how Cloughie finished up.We both know,and he was in that state as a manager as well.

Clough scored 251 goals in 279 games, was the fastest player to reach 200 goals. He severely damaged his right knee against Bury in a boxing day fixture. He tore his meniscus, his Medial ligament and his Anterior Cruciate. There was no operation at the time for this. Apart from remove it the meniscus and put him in plaster for 9 weeks. Amazingly he came back from the injury and played 3 more times for Sunderland scoring 2 more goal against Leeds. He said he could have carried on another 3 or 4 years but at a lower level as Sunderland claimed the insurance for him, he had a testimonial game and the rest...well...one of the greatest managers ever. The knee injury can be a career ender even in the modern game and is seriously tough to rehabilitate I did the same thing and ended up with 11 operations on the same knee. I think Cloughie had a lot of psychological damage from his injury as he never felt easy around injured players following..hence what he said to Eddy Gray

On Brian Clough, he was the most overrated manager of all time. The only time he won things was when Peter Taylor was alongside him. Don’t forget, Cloughie also got Forest relegated. He believed his own hype. Just a big mouth who should have stuck to TV.
