I agree that we should never make peace with mediocrity. But, as a boom bap generation fan of hip hop, that beat on Rakim’s Be Ill is a breath of fresh air for me and countless others. It’s fire. And Rakim’s verse is not just “a’ight.” It’s complex, artful, and dope. I’m hearing more people appreciate and praise it than shake salt on it.

Most people are sheep stuck in the Matrix, so to speak. Isn't that why we're where we are? So much praise on the internet is fake. But hey, if they're purchasing Rakim's new music, then who can knock that?

Fact's 💯...Well said...I don't know what he was listening to, when it comes to Rakim "Be ill"...The beat is authentic Hip Hop with the drums patterns going hard and the scratching and like you said: "Rakim complex patterns" is complexed, artful and is super dope. His interview lost me when he low key dissed Rakim when it wasn't a fact. I've seen nothing but positive vibes/reviews on Rakim new track. To each his or her own but I think HE GOT THIS REVIEW WRONG !!!

@@mathematicalfacts1439 I've heard this kinda rebuttal a million times. Your standards are low as hell. Respectfully. Y'all want to like this shit because it sounds familiar to hip hop you grew up on. Like all things, the devil's in the details. If you listen to this stuff close, it's super watered down and lacking umph. A song that'll be promptly forgotten. Like that 7th Seal garbage Rah dropped back in the 2000s. Y'all will make excuses but the truth is that no one will pay to hear these new songs live. Let's be real.

@@tochiRTA That's your opinion !!! And it just so happens that your opinion is in the minority. There's strength in numbers and majority rules. If a majority of Rakim fans like it and give it a stamp of approval, then that's all that matters to "US" as fans. At this point he's making music that he think "HIS FANS" would like and appreciate. I think the rhyming he did on that track is show casing some elite rhyming skillz and patterns. I think you don't like it bcuz you don't get it. Maybe it's just not for you and leave it at that.

Pete Rock switched from the SP to the MPC 2K (16 bit) in the early 2000s and Preemo switched from S-950/MPC 60 to MPC X (16 bit) in the last 5 years. I'm a gear head so I watch their advertisements of what they use.

@@tochiRTA My guess is that they abandon their "old" to sound to a cleaner one just to be "current" and avoid sounding old. Myself, I switched from all hardware to computers about 20 years ago. But, still every sound I use is first being run through the SP 12 then it goes into the computer to give it that crunchy sound. Also, Damu the Fudgemunk is a younger guy who still uses the old classic 12 bit sound. Still some appreciate it and still use that sound. For Large Pro, I like the whole Mega Philosophy album he did with Cormega 10 years ago and the pyramids track he did with NORE. But, he hasn't done too much in the past 5 years except for stuff where the vocals are sort of off. Recent Large Pro stuff: McGyver - Hemisphere (2020) Eto - Back to the BBQ (2020) The Xav - Black Duke (2020) Paul Wall feat Terminology - Talk About It (2023)

You piss me off so much sometimes but I'll never unsubscribe. You have your own perspective and I respect you for keeping it real. Agreed, we are in an entertainment apocalypse (especially in film) but I would say it started with the pandemic. It bothers me when the public's indication of a "good song" seems to just be a regurgitation of the familiar. The 2010s are my favorite decade for hip hop and it definitely has to do with the fact I grew up thru it. But to me the artistry and innovation peaked there, at least for the foreseeable future.

i respectfully disagree. not only was Rakim fire, that Masta Killa verse is FIRREEEEE. i walked on the sea of existence, stepped on the shore of the moment, the father of civilization, i own it, make of my daughter creation, one nation under a groove, fortitude virtues of seamless scriptures, this picture, my life's intelligence stimulates life and matter, so eloquent, thoughts so delicate, death weighs more than elephants, strokes of excellence, extracted from the elements, a powerful calmness, i'm always armed and equipped, wit what i bomb with, a sweet flowin river of math, facts are actual, calculated pressure applied, hits are tactical.....

For me the beat is important only as a canvas for the MCs themes/intentions/ideas to be realized. It can either heighten or lower expectations for a song but it should never take precedence over the actual lyrics themselves. It's just embellishment. Some artists have top tier production but artistically "ain't sayin nuthin" serving up Rosetta Stone level rhymes with boarding house reasoning. To each his own.

Come on, he’s probably the most honest and knowledgeable critic on KZbin right now-especially since the big wigs haven’t given him the bag yet. I loved the last single by Pete Rock and Common, but he’s largely right-we want that gritty, low end Pete Rock, not this Griselda inspired “boom” (with no “bap”) Pete Rock. We’ve got enough Alchemist, Daringer’s and Roc March’s to bore us with that kind of production.

Peep the LL and Eminem jawn... Sick, musically and lyrical delivery! Rakim's Be Ill is better than what he;s put out in 25 years. Common & Pete Rock...so far, I kinda agree with you wholeheartedly....Nas & Premier's Define my Name ain't it neither. Still, gotta wait on more from them all so we can give a full critique as albums are comin'... but yeah, we want 'best foot forward' music and all round dope production which it would seem is on shaky ground from the legends, but i still have high hopes, until/unless we get let all the wayyyy down. Okay you made some good points I will gave you that, but the thing is he was taking a shot at Drake he was speaking on all of his personalities the things that he does in the industry he just didn't say any names from what I got I believe that or he was talking in random about the state of Hip Hop and how cheap it's gotten that anybody can get it I'm from the era of the Saturday night special guns and any Joe Schmo on the Block can get one so I think he's saying metaphorically like that's how the game has gotten that anybody can get in here and pop I didn't see no Hustler lyrics on there I seen old LL Q-tip did the beat those are the type of Vibes that we can old school for the simple fact that the Young Generation is not doing anything to elevate the game there was a saying on the Avengers first movie example and one of the agents gave Captain America back his old costume he said well isn't that a little old school and the Agents response was in this day and age it's needed. I understand what you're saying about the bar I do get that I just don't think it was horrible I believe he could have came out with a different single but I think just because he's trying to make noise and ride the wave of the Drake situation I think that that's the reason why he did this if I was if I was in the booth with him I would have told him this is not a single is definitely an album but I would never released it for my single

I judge it off being a hip hop fanatic for like 3 decades now. When you listen to rap long enough, you know what's ill and what's wack. Rakim literally said this. I wish I could find the damn interview. It's from the mid 2000s. We know deep down this shit aint really hittin like that but we're scared to say it. And we're giving participation trophies because we wanna shut ourselves out of the pop rap world. But let's be real - the fall of boom bap (which definitely happened in the 2000s) went with the rise and domination of casual-oriented pop rap.

Boombap has truly fell off the cliff. I think it's split into two categories. One is the so called "boombap" which is really just stiff drumless griselda stuff and then you got young producers who try to emulate the 90s cuz they love it but don't quite understand the layers and nuances of what made those beats special to begin with so those blind spots are ignored and the finished product is some weak knockoff that just doesn't hit hard like the 90s boombap beats do.
@tochiRTA
@tochiRTA 6 ай бұрын
the young producers who try to emulate the 90s.... many of them aren't being sincere. They lack the charisma/talent to compete in the sea of trap producers so they fake 'keeping it real' as an easier outlet to underground fame/clout. If they were truly sincere they would know instantly why their 90s imitation beats aren't cutting it and innovate something else.
