The Tribune that ordered the detachment to turn and attack towards the left is a big deal because of how command and control really works. You have to understand there's no God's Eye View of watching the battle with the ability to instantly order any unit anywhere on the battlefield to do what you want. It's not like video games. The reality was orders were issued and that was essentially it. You may tell a unit when to attack, but controlling them was now left to the subordinates. The lower ranking officers have to recognize what's going on and act accordingly. It would have been really easy for the Romans on the right to keep pursuing the fleeing opponents there, but that one Tribune remembered what the big picture was and took decisive, proper action that won the battle. Whoever he was, I hope he was recognized and rewarded for that.

The early republican army, yes if on proper terrain, but not the reformed legions. Terrain was the primary reason Macedon never invaded Italy and also the reason why the native Italian, Latin and Etruscan tribes would abandon the phalanx formation as Italian terrain was far too hilly and uneven for the phalanx to maneuver into battle formation properly. There was never a chance for Macedon to conquer Italy.

The late period Hellenic armies like the one at the Battle of Cynoscephalae had long degraded from the Macedonian Armies of Phillip II & Alexander. This was mainly caused by the Diadochi Succession Wars that ensued after the death of Alexander. The constant in-fighting saw the Hellenic armies move away from combined arms & focus almost entirely on Sarrisa vs Sarrisa Phalanx battles since when facing similar styled armies the Diacdochi found those with the higher quality Pike Phalanx tended to come out on top. Slowly over time they moved away from things like Hyspasists (Elite Heavy but Flexible Infantry) & Lancer/Heavy Cavalry which guarded the flanks of the Phalanx & provided the Hammer to the Anvil. The Macedonian armies Rome face by the time of their expansion were shells of their former selves. Had the Diadochi Wars not taken place & the traditional styled armies of Phillip II & Alexander had been preserved, Rome would have been in for rough time.

Rome was still Struggling with Samnites around the time Alexander had conquered everything in known World as far as India. Roma had yet to unite Italia and did not yet have the huge pools of manpower to draw from, they had also yet to hit the Marian Period and the Military Reforms that came with them. The Romans did not yet have a Professional Army during this period, the Macedonians did. Romans would have had to return to tend their fields and farms, the Macedonians didn't. Also the Macedonians were masters of Siege Craft long before the Romans. Almost all of the Siege Craft the Romans would later Adopt came from the Greeks and Macedonians. Hey man, loved it! Like I said last time, you can see a clear progression and advance in quality with every video. Some constructive feedback and I'm being really nit-picky. Few shots with clipping or bugged soldiers, the more you can edit that stuff out, the better. Also for people who don't know the subject matter well enough/beginners, perhaps a few more captions would help? For example, only TW players know the tell-tell sign of retreating soldiers (heads hanging low (14:04), trudging off the battlefield etc.), so more captions or narration at that point would assist? Stuff like this would take from elite tier to God tier IMO Keep up the great work

An organized and well positioned phalanx could have never lost from the romans. The formation (phalanx) that conquered all of the east known world was not used well by the successors of Alexander who adopted many of the persian tactics and units. Alexander would have never left his phalanx exposed like this and the greatest example is the battle of Gaugamela where Parmenion had the order to turn his units and retreat while fighting if he was outflanked. The final blow was always coming from the cavalry while the phalanx was holding the enemy in position. In Cynoscephalae half of the phalanx is missing and the cavalry is not used as a hammer. In any case the legion proved its adaptability and mobility on the field.

The Roman method of war using massive scuta and pila was pretty perfect to counter the Macedonian principle of war. Both armies are elite and both conquered the world in their own times, only exemplifying their greatness, its impossible to determine a more successful method of war, but against each other, they prove differently.
@yanniskts7664
@yanniskts7664 4 ай бұрын
@@lostvayne3977 well if the Roman method was that perfect to counter the Macedonian phalanx why when they did clash head to head, the Romans couldn't resist and gave ground...only when the phalanx was outflanked due to its half deployment they started exploiting the gap having success. Furthermore, the fact that formations with long pikes like the Macedonian phalanx were used later by different armies throughout history in combined arms mode (spanish terthios, swiss pikeman, etc) proves the efficiency and the durability of the concept that the Macedons had about the wall of pikes joined by cavalry and light infantry.

@@sairadha674 I disagree, whenever the Romans had competent generals they lost battles, you need good generals at all times, and in all armies, also you need a well-informed and trained staff that can follow the army's movements. Nicanor proved himself incopetent and on the limits of treason by not developing his phalanx at the side of Phillip...on the other hand the unknown Roman officer who took the initiative to turn his troops and attack the flank of Phillip, arose as the decisive factor. of the battle. To further prove the fact that sometimes Great generals (with capital G) are forever marked by the faults of their staff, who on the planet thinks today that Napoleon is not a great general because he lost the battle in Waterloo... no one. The Romans borrowed a page from the Greeks own fighting tactics by deploying war elephants to slow down and disrupt the Greek skirmisher formation, keeping them from rapidly moving forward into the ensuing battle and then counter attacking with cavalry. Their archers and missile throwers had some effect, but it was the cavalry that made the crucial difference. Greek infantry was more than a match for the Romans who needed a flanking maneuver to gain the upper hand.

Thanks for the great video. It would appear before the battle that the Macedonians had the advantage because they were well trained in their phalanx and they occupied the hill top. Sun Tzu taught there are some armies you should not fight- never attack up a hill. The Romans’ war elephants were not decisive. Both sides couldn’t fully use their cavalries because stirrups were not invented at that time. Why didn’t Philip V’s big number of warriors in reserve at the rear join in later to save the day? Why didn’t the Romans adopt the Macedonian/Greek phalanx after this decisive battle but only on flat plains? Was it because the phalanx was often not flexible enough? War elephants were the tanks in ancient warfare. And not the first time that war elephants were more of a hindrance to the army deploying them. Battle of Zama, Hannibal. The battle of Malacca, Malaya, sultan of Malacca (where the Portuguese defeated the Malays).

How do you get such clean looking image quality? Is it just from playing at 4k? I have all settings including AA maxed out at 1440p but my image quality isn’t nearly as good as yours, especially in screenshots it’s much noisier. In any case great video and narration! Rome 2 still looks great a decade later.
