Cost of housing, man. Humans require housing, and because everybody needs it, people can’t (usually, generally) choose to abstain or opt-out. Even if they could, it wouldn’t drive housing costs down: conglomerates nowadays buy up residential properties and don’t mind them sitting empty if their rental-rates are unworkable. They can still claim those properties as assets-even when they’re not generating rent. Those properties can still make money for corporations through their sale or leverage. Big real-estate holding companies -or property-management companies: the variety that own so many properties that tenants can’t choose an alternative landlord-they’re squeezing us. If (basically) no money is available to you after paying rent, there are no dollars for you to work with: and knowing how to be frugal won’t help you when you’re already choosing the most inexpensive of things: required, necessary things, mind you. “Y’know what austerity is young people ?” Well, kinda… ? What should I do: live with no electricity or running water, hoard *those* pennies for multiple months, and invest that paltry sum into something low-risk ? The cost of housing combined with student loans…there is no extra money at the end of the month to plan with. Be responsible with credit cards: yes: of course. Show restraint of course. But when your car breaks down, and that’s your conveyance to work, you’ve gotta pull out the credit card for car repair. It’s almost not a choice. Fiat money distributed welfare-style to the working poor to “make up the difference” between wages and essential costs is being proposed in some US locations. That sort of financial assistance doesn’t give renters discretionary spending to get frugal and wise with: The necessary government intervention is to address choice-less-ness regarding the large-expense necessities that consumers can’t haggle against.

One of the big differences that maybe we don’t discuss enough with the economy is there are no extended families. In my grandparents generation, my grandfather and his wife lived in a household the first year of marriage with his parents and his grandparents. Everyone pitched in to help on the farm they were farmers, And my grandfather built his house everyone in the community came and helped him build it. By my parents generation grandparents were in the nursing homes, and the parents were with the kids with the so-called “nuclear family“ which was not a traditional family. Traditional family is several generations under the same roof. Today they split up the family and pushed radical individualism so we’re all on our own. Easier to conquer if we’re alone.

Then I "checked out" of society & have been broke for 8 years, planned on living out of my van until i couldnt and then finding a spot deep in the woods, luckily for now I ended up living on a relative's land instead. Zero desire or ambition to be a cog in the machine. What we're experiencing is the universe 25 rat experiment, & it won't last. Humans, generally speaking, have infinite potential, but infantile wisdom. The further we stray from our roots & true nature, the sicker everything becomes from every angle imaginable. None of this will be around much longer.

Even went to school for ag-business, worked on farms, and did a ton of other trade work. I also grow gourmet and medicinal mushrooms and teach people how. Life is much more than just being a "cog in the machine". Yes that existence is a possibility, but like you said, we have unlimited potential. Why not grow trees in which the fruit you might not eat from for future generations? It's about feeling of value to and respected by your community and having one to begin with. Isolation can be good for the mind, but they deemed solitary confinement cruel punishment a long time ago for a reason. You aren't meant to be alone

You darn kids and your Netflix subscription, that's why you can't afford a $500k house!

Young people have always spent money on things they don't need, I was one of them and was horrible with money at a young age. The problem is that we went from a relatively affordable cost of living 5 years ago (Not including real estate) to rapid inflation and high interest. You just can't spend money like you used to and young people still want that same lifestyle and are getting more and more debt ridden because of it.

Doom spending is real! Most my friends thinks they cant retire so why bother trying, so they just dont save and just spend money! Fun now and pay for it later at an old age!

You can’t compare average home from the 60’s and 70’s to today and then say home prices have increased x amount faster than inflation. The average home in the 60’s-70’s was 1500 sqft versus today where the average home is 2200 sqft. Pull out the cost of central heat and air, that wasn’t common then either. Further a first home usually wasn’t the average but instead it was less than average as that’s what everyone has done to get started on the path of home ownership. Now I’ll concede even when comparing similar homes prices are higher now when compared to income. However, it is not to the degree people are being told making the black pill worse for many.

5:10 I get it. But no one sees the bigger, yet smaller pucture. Americans took the home loans they couldn't afford. Congress change the qualifying percentages, and it was illegal for banks to tell people they cant afford this loan. So eff it, send it, full speed, full blast.
