Zero prep is a myth. If you aren't making everything up at the table, including the mechanics, it is not Zero Prep. You might have read the rules 20 years ago, but your did read thew rules and that is prep. I run games off the cuff, but it is always in a setting I created or in Call of Cthulhu. I have never run Zero prep in 40+ years of gaming, but I make shit up as the game progresses all the time.

@@kevinsullivan3448 Nobody is arguing for literal zero lifetime prep, but it is a valid point you bring up IMO. For those who want to apply and not miss the mark completely. Zero prep could be as Basic Expert said, you are able to just sit down and play using the tools of the game (and your own improvised developments). However to actually learn, do this: Prep too much, play, then prep less, or different for the next game. Thats the way. You gotta let the players do exactly what they want too. Drawing a blank? Np, just go over the situation afterwards in your head and come open with a few options. And next time, maybe prep a few of those hangups. Prep is individual, but zero prep is still a very useful concept to talk about games that are almost entirely improvised.
