It is a shame that such a beautiful building is destroyed, rather than repurposed. But, unfortunately, money is what drives the way many things work, including corporations AND governments! Additionally, this building obviously has many components that could be re-used or recycled but sadly, will only see a landfill.
@theamerican70802 жыл бұрын
Once the internal plumbing and drainage network fail, the building has to be practically demolished to access it for replacement anyway.

with so many people out of work and such waste of material, some one could buy the brick scrap, employ ( make work project ) for homeless or challenged folks and resell the brick as reclaimed. I understand there are some whom would take advantage , but maybe work towards a tiny house or room share expense.

@@katjygruben6546 I here you , I was once told by a general contractor , " make your garbage look good , someone will want to buy it " I worked for him , saw exactly what he ment after we sorted steel from demolished structures . I guess it depends on the people that want to do it for the RIGHT reason.

Why are you using water on the building

water is sprayed to bind airborne dust and prevent it from drifting through the air and pollute the neighborhood

Forgive my ignorance, but why would a building which doesn’t appear to be decrepit be torn down? Unless it has unseen defects.

Legislative services sounds like a state or council building. They are always selling off this type of building to build apartments and make money. That's the usual reason in the UK. It's probably the same in the US. Condition of the building is immaterial if they can make a load if cash selling the site. There's a lot more remote working and not so much office space needed anyway.
@arthureverett82202 жыл бұрын
The building has better scrap value in steel than the cost of repurposing the building itself The value of scrap metal has gone way up.Thats why they crush unsold brand new cars
@PreservationEnthusiast2 жыл бұрын
@@arthureverett8220 More likely they were after the value of the land. That building has a little steel, but check out the video, it's mostly concrete frame with brick cladding. Hardcore has some recycle value but not a lot.

According to the Legislative Services web site, this building was constructed in 1976 in the Georgian Revival style. Size limitations, outdated infrastructure, and mold have made it obsolete. Here is the story: mdstad.com/sites/default/files/DLS%20Design%20Presentation%20-%20Community%20Outreach%20-%20FINAL_09.29.21_1.pdf

If the bricks etc are just destined for landfill why is the excavator operator so keen to separate the outer skin of bricks? Is he just playing? I thought he was trying to save the outer bricks but he just scraped the whole lot together. Incidentally, I would think this building was early 20th century.
@JohnZWetmore2 жыл бұрын
Bricks and concrete are kept separate to be ground up and used as a sub-base for paving. It's much cheaper than sending them to the landfill. The building was built in the 1970s, but designed to fit in with the older buildings around it.

@JohnZWetmore2 жыл бұрын
The usual practice is to trash everything, even if it has substantial salvage value. Perhaps the value of the slates (after covering the cost of the skilled labor to remove them intact) doesn't seem worth the trouble for a big corporation, or perhaps it would take too much time on a tight construction schedule. I've only seen one building where they salvaged the slates.
@ghost.ranger16282 жыл бұрын
I can not imagine how much it would cost to build a building that sturdy with brick nowadays. Shame to see it torn down. Demos are a lot different in Maryland then in Ohio, usually I would see a smaller machine following the bigger one pulling out metal pieces and loading the metal in trucks to be recycled at the scrap yard.

This seems like such an abject waste of taxpayer money. I'm sure there is an accountant or politician somewhere who can justify this demolition, but not only are the building materials wasted (as is the labor of the original construction), the landfill will have its capacity reduced, and now the same kinds of building material will have to be purchased to make a new building! I suppose employing the construction workers for demolition & construction will go on the positive side of the ledger sheet, but still... Such a waste.
