What the highest mileage spark plugs you've pulled? From the messages I've received these were the original plugs with 150,000 miles. I mean I have to admit I can't tell any difference in performance with fresh plugs. These newer cars with super high voltage ignition systems are pretty good at jumping a spark, haha. The dual spark plugs probably help a tad.

I got '87 VW passat/santana. The plugs are over 20 years old and over 100k miles. Once I bought an replacement ones(ngk), just in case, but they go bad after less than 2 years and I swap back the old ones (bosch).

In my w211 e350 I found 3 NGK plugs on one cylinder bank and 3 Bosch on the other side. Replaced them with new ngk’s all around and it gave a noticeable improvement in (smoother) acceleration, i think the important thing is that they matched rather than the brand. Keep up the great mercedes content!

Thinking on it longer, I changed some spark plugs on a Mercedes C230/330 (??? can't remember Mercedes models all that well). Original owner. He said he'd never changed his spark plugs before and he had over 230k miles. I had to work a couple spark plugs back and forth to be confident they'd come out, they all needed too much torque to start coming out. I was careful and I saved his cylinder heads. The boss was upset that I diagnosed the misfire cause instead of just replacing spark plugs and then seeing...If I'm paid to diagnose first, that's what I'm going to do. This was the sort of boss who has a crystal ball and when you find what's wrong he always knew it from the beginning. Some people just don't understand the scientific method. Just because the first thing you test isn't bad, doesn't mean you were wrong to test it. Coils are above spark plugs, so I like to check for spark first before pulling a plug. Rule out the easiest first. 2 spark plugs per cylinder is kinda crazy. I like how in the video he said before to not drop anything under the hood. I went quickly to grab a bolt and somehow it hooked a coil with it and it fell into the very tight engine compartment. 1.5 hours later...sigh.

Another great video. Thanks. A quick tip, speaking of the carbon buildup on the used plugs. When I was taking mine out of them got completely jammed in the head because when I was backing it out the carbon on the plug clogged the threads so badly that it froze the plug in the threads. The plug wouldn't come out and I also couldn't get it back in. I was terrified that I had ruined the aluminum head. I solved the problem by spraying some WD-40 in the hole and letting it seep into the threads. I worked the plug back and forth a bit at a time until it finally worked itself free. The car smoked a bit after I got it all back together but the WD-40 saved my ass, and my wallet.

Awesome video as usual!. A quick note to add is that a good thing to check also, specially if your are doing this in your own garage and you care about your car is to check the spark plug gap and gap it to spec just to double check knowing that almost all sparks now are delivered pre-gapped but it is something that won't hurt you doing.

There is actually quite a few engine items that need to be serviced. MAF cleaning, TB cleaning, Induction cleaning on direct injection, timing belt, timing chains and tensioners (on anything Ford) belts, fluid including brake/power steering/trans. Cop boots or plug wires. Some still have pcv valves.

A good add on to this "tune up" service is to check and replace your cabin filters since you're doing routine service anyway. Periodically changing cabin filters will definitely improve your interior air quality especially if you constantly run the A/C or heat and helps prevent premature Blower motor failure.

Regarding your question about the NGK/Bosch plugs from the OEM - I had the same dilemma as I wanted OEM spec. From what I reseached, NGK PFR 5 -11 spark plugs were designated for AMG M113 engines and Bosch spark plugs were designated for non-AMG M113 engines. Mercedes-logo spark plugs back in the day were used to be NGK, but then switched to Bosch (not sure if for technical or commercial reasons). Most importantly, AMG M113 engines must have resistor type spark plugs with 1mm electrode gap, which Bosch F 8 DPER is.

All kinds of people have told me over the years that Denso was original equipment or OE, but at least on 1 car, it ruined my acceleration permanently even though I went back. Neighbor picked up a socket of mine the other day in the street in front of my house. I had dropped it in the engine a day or so before. It was gone, gone, gone. I agree with the Bermuda triangle analogy. I think the heat and combustion process creates some kind of spatial anomaly around the engine. If you drop something, you would think it is right where you dropped it. But no. The reason you cannot find it is because it is in fact not there anymore. Might appear later again though. 500 years from now we are going to fly space ships on this spatial anomaly principle.

Oh waterzap99! Have I got a good one for you! Around 2005 or 6 I was working on my 1999 Chevy Prizm. I dropped a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter. It fell silently. Not a sound. If I hadn't watched it fall, I wouldn't have believed it fell. Not a clink. From sunlight to darkness so fast. I spent a lot of time looking for it and gave up. Fast forward to about 2014. I needed to change my starter. I could find where one bolt head was that held it in, but I was clueless about the other one. There's this deep dark whole on the other side of the intake and also on the other side of the transmission, where I was fumbling around and failing to find the head of this bolt for more than an hour. There's an object which is smooth which feels like it has a hole in it. I thought, could it be a 3/8" driven bolt of some kind. So in goes my extension. I felt it move. I pulled back and whatever it was fell back silently. I tried fishing with my hands, and in this oily hole with all the cushion from dirt and oil in the world was my 1/2" to 3/8" adapter! Excited, and without this extra object in the way I finally found the 14mm bolt head I needed to be on and this starter was coming out!

I used to tune up on my cars before when I was in my teens, early twenties, but thought I was screwing up and discouraged me. A mechanic told me that mistakes will happen when working on a car. A part could be bad from the parts store, which makes tuning or repairing your car a nightmare. Anyways, I stopped diying on my cars afterwards, and didn't think anything of it until most recently. My Montero stalled and will not idle. I was going to take it to the mechanic, but I stopped myself. I began reading online, watched some videos, and now I'm digging through the engine compartment looking at air and fuel problems. The MAF seems to be a common issue with Mitsubishi' s, as is the egr.

The factory plugs are NGKs. If you buy them from the dealer, they will have the Mercedes logo on them and cost an arm and a leg. The Bosch plugs are the cheaper alternative. I did the plugs and wires on my E55 without removing the ignition coils but I am guessing it's much tighter on the C55. Either way, the plugs on my S6 V10 were quicker to change.

1. don't disconnect the coils from the wiring, just swing the whole mess up onto the intake manifold. 2. MB uses ngk and bosch spark plugs interchangeably. 3. be real careful with the airbox screws, they thread into plastic and will strip out. 4. if you do remove the airmass, likely both the seals on the elbow should be replaced. 5. don't fuck with the EGR tube unless you really need to. its easy to fuck it up. 6. lube the airbox to airmass seal before you reinstall the airbox. I've seen more than a few of them damaged from installing it dry. also lube the rubber bumpers the airbox clips to, so the clips slide on and don't bend.

With electric fuel pumps and large filters you don't even need to change the fuel filter. That's why they made it so hard to change. Changed mine at 370,000 miles and had no change in rack pressure, because even 370,000 miles of gunk isn't enough to cause an issue. For me a typical "tune-up" involves cleaning the MAF, running injector cleaner, sea-foaming the intake, and blowing out the air filter. Cleaning the maf and air filter probably has the biggest effect. At the same time, don't fall behind on carbon build up because you don't want to do it when you have 1/16" of crud that will flake off in chips and cause wear.

NGK cured many misfire issues that the Bosch could not...the NGK also lasted much longer and did not suffer from the spark blow out issues the Bosch plugs had...we changed ALL these to NGK, you should too...

99% of Mercedes i've pulled plugs have been Bosch. I see a lot of people in the comments are saying NGK though. I'd run NGK just personal preference, but on customer cars I replace with whatever they had before.

Could you this type of video for a W211? Because it is kind of hard to find good videos about maintenance and what to do. I am looking at buying one currently and you already took a little stress of my chest by showing that you can work on these cars, but I would like to know what the most common issues are and how to fix them

hey alex, great vids always! Was doing the plugs on my E55, like yours they were pretty dirty, soot, but also oil on the threads. This normal for these engines, or is this an issue with valve seals??

You mentioned manufactures use the same engine architecture or specs for different models. Are the parts interchangeable in most cases?

Too funny most people couldn’t do the first couple of things in the video, let alone change a tire .but if you still have a pre 90’s good know how to still do those different adjustments to the carby or valve adjustment check points list goes on .

Wait....you worked as a Benz technician and used air tools on spark plugs? Thanks for the tip on anti seize. I did not know that, and just finished the plugs on an XJR. With anti seize.

What he said was, "Start threading the plug by hand, thread in using the air wrench, then set with a torque wrench."

Only vehicle I torque spark plugs on is a 4.6 Ford. Tightening the plugs past 15 nm will pull the threads and cause plug blow out destroying the COP and creating a very expensive repair.

My C32 AMG uses NGK plugs from the factory so it’s possible the c55 does too. Seems like everyone is going to NGK
