Just an opinion (much like bung holes, everyone has one so please forgive me) I think you need a custom bent turbo exhaust pipe, and to remount the turbo further forward and more outboard from the Alternator. Alternators so carry some voltage on the case and if there is any leaks from the turbo gaskets impinging on the Alternator it can cause it to fail prematurely, moving the turbo forward and further outboard would prevent both pulling an electrical arc and blowing hot exhaust gases on the Alternator both of which can cause the Alternator to fail suddenly.

Hey man quick note You're going to want to change your vacuum lines to go to the front of the turbo because you're basically going to be pressurizing your block with those vacuum lines because they're no longer pulling a vacuum you're actually pushing pressure into the intake manifold it's just something you missed hopefully you're able to read this I see you have like a thousand comments.
@kaplis117
@kaplis117 Ай бұрын
better way is to put in a check valve and vacuum reservoir, just like OEMs do it. And turbo will not create vacuum.

Wow! That was a lot of work, but you did a great job, Alex! Those old straight sixes were/are real work horses. Not much power, but all you need is torque and low ratio diffs to climb and forge streams and mud pits and the like. Great job, Max, with calling it a TJ. Alex, you him dinner on that one. 🙂Max, your videos are top-notch. I am sure you sometimes offer a hand in "wrenching" on cars when Alex needs another pair of hands. I can testify to the 4.0 reliability. My first vehicle was a 1998 jeep Cherokee 4.0. Bought it with a 4 inch lift and 33s so I assumed it was previously beat before I got it. I was only 15 when I bought it and I didn’t know as much as I do now. When I bought it, it had about 10 pounds of oil pressure and didn’t increase with rpm. Dad said it was just a gauge 😂. Put a mechanical gauge on it and it was accurate. Thru my ownership of about 8 months and 20k miles of low oil pressure and constant off-road thrashing, it finally started to die just shy of 180k

I had a roommate in college who put a 3.8L turbo v-6 from a Buick Regal into a 1967 Kaiser Jeep (Kaiser was after Willy's and before AMC). We were at college in a small town in New Mexico, so it was perfect for the area. The Kaiser-Jeep version of the engine was available in some Jeeps in 1967 and was similar in size and bolt placement with not too much modification. Paul (the Jeep's owner) had the experience to do the job, and his Dad ran a truck customization business in Hammond IN. They would take a truck chassis and install a cherry pick, make it like a power wagon, whatever the client wanted.

I have a 98’ XJ with a turbo 4.0. Built the engine, started by buying that Same exact kit you are installing but chopped off all the flanges, and tossed all the garbage parts in the kit, and bought all high end stuff. I just finished building a complete return style fuel system for it, Walbro 255LPH, accel 30lb injectors, upgraded from that pile of trash turbo to a GT3071 ball bearing liquid cooled CX Racing turbo (still lower end but works amazingly well) Have been through the ringer figuring out all the issues with turboing a motor that simply was never intended to have forced induction I am turning notifications on on here BC I am anxious to see you try to make more than 5-6lbs boost with that turbo with the factory fuel system in place. You mentioned 60lb injectors?? That sounds 2X too much imo but again I know you have Turboed a ton of rides and I am anxious to see you go through the same exact process I did BC there’s not a lot of high quality vids successfully turbo charging these 4.0 motors unless you watch Newcomer builds and in that instance he has limitless everything at his disposal. Good luck on this, I would not put more than 8-10lbs to that motor with the factory pistons in it, and you DEF need to run a catch can for the blow by oil you are gonna produce HMU if you have any questions bubba, I can prob save you some time in the prob areas

Former Jeep XJ owner here. Had that exact motor in my Jeep. I looked at power adders and engine mods, and the cost to power production was never worth it. I bought a 1991 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited from the police auction in San Antonio sight unseen. It turned out to have 275,000 miles on it...needless to say I cringed. BUT...I had it towed to the street behind the hotel I was staying in, had a locksmith come make a key for it and even though the entire exhaust was missing, the Jeep fired right up. I couldn't believe it. Drove it back to Austin the next day, proceeded to rebuild the front and rear suspension, and replaced the tires/wheels with a matching set... I changed the oil and transmission fluid, transaxle, and differentials, and put a battery in it. After that, it started up and ran fine up until the day it got stolen. The bastards joy rode it into the grave. They ramped something and put a hole in the oil pan... I didn't have insurance on it at the time either, since we weren't using it....bad idea. That was the 2nd of 8 cars to be stolen in a 3 year period. Hard, hard lessons learned... I find good deals..what can I say?! :( Austin has a serious problem with auto theft and as far as I can tell there is nothing being done about it. Shamefull. TWO officers on the stolen vehicle task force the last time I checked, which was when my truck got stolen..along with my car hauling trailer. But I can do it all again..hopefully better this time. Keeping things under lock and key as opposed to on the street and ideally putting tracking devices and lots and lots of cameras.. Very very good cameras. And dogs with laser guided railguns or something.. lol.. hey at least i can laugh about it, right..? yeah... But getting back to the main point of this message and not the self pity party that only I am attending.. Those 4.0L I6 engines are for all intents and purposes indestructible... .Barring complete lunacy behind the wheel anyway... Intensive porpoises... Purportedly intended to say intents and purposes and not intensive porpoises, purportedly...

Telling people that heating the head of a bolt doesn’t do anything is wrong. There is a lot of scenarios that heating the head of the bolt up with a torch. The heat will travel and expand the bolt and when you let it cool, it usually will come loose.. not always but working on construction equipment 95% of the time it works.

....well, not quite bulletproof. I've done three head gaskets on three different Jeeps. So turn up the boost, blown it... Then, put a Cometic head gasket on it. It takes 23 mins 14 seconds to do a head gasket. Head weighs a ton, though. They blown between 4 and 5 for some reason.

@tylerseabook9423 Yes, but every engine has its weakness. I've done three of them for friends. Right between cylinder 4 and 5, every time. Must be a hot spot....

At my old job a coworker asked me to install a turbo kit on his Lexus is300....nothing fit and nothing made sense. Turns out it was made for an is200 that's not available in the US. You get what you pay for in the end. But makes for good content. Keep up the great work Alex.

You can also do a straight six build and combine components of the 4.2 and 4.0 to make a 4.6 then bore it out and have a 5.0 straight six that sounds amazing !

Thats awesome!. I know youre not all that far away from Ohio. You should do a video at Southington(was Jeep Skool) off-road park or at Wellsville(amazing trails, spend 5 minutes looking it up on youtube and you'll be impressed)

I still think you’re gonna want AC. My friends other jeep has no AC but he made sure to keep the factory AC intact on this LS swap. Taking the top and doors off just lets more heat in and heat radiates through the floor, plus even with the heat and air off you get a little hot air seeping through the vents which is great when it’s 90F. Might as well just install some AC before spring time arrives. There’s great aftermarket add on kits available that work very well and are fairly easy installs. Also, purchasing Chrysler products really demonstrates just how much you like to work on cars. I’m kidding, it’s true but it’s just a joke. The jeep is awesome. The Turbo looks and sounds killer
