As a member of the Transformers continuity, we have a similar thing to "Brittle Bricks" called "Gold Plastic Syndrome" or GPS. Basically any figure make from sparkly brown, gold, or similar plastic had the potential to disintegrate due to how brittle it was. This plastic wouldn't stress, it would shatter! Especially if it was used for a hinge, tab/slot, or anything that would be prone to stress. One particular, pun intended, figure "Beast Wars Neo Randy" is noteworthy for being made almost entirely out of this type of plastic and having a spring loaded transformation from warthog to robot mode but is packaged in beast mode and held only by a clear rubber band. The amount of stress on the brittle plastic could, and has, lead to him just exploding right out of the packaging. Luckily there have been no new cases of GPS since 2009.

The other most notable instance is Mega Zarak, whose feet are made out of the infamous gold plastic. Unlike Randy, a Mega Zarak goes for thousands of dollars, and he's a massive figure so those feet are under a lot of stress, even in package. He's basically Schrodinger's Collectible. As long as you keep that box sealed, maybe he's mint, maybe he's not.

There's almost a meta joke to be made here about it being a Beast Wars figure doing that, considering what happens in that series to those staying in the wrong mode for too long. Except for, Beast Mode is supposed to be the _safe_ mode to remain in...

Also happened to Masters of the Universe figures back then. The original Extendar figure was molded in a peal shine white color with gold accents, and hoo boy was it brittle. Especially the arm joints would just snap, and because kids were accustomed to figures being durable enough to play with them outdoors, this one got destroyed fairly easily. All of his joints bein extendable didn't help either :D

I personally more remember a G2 Electro and Skyquake's gimmick as GPS cases, as well as Killbison - member of Liokaiser team from TF Victory (and since original Liokaiser was Japan exclusive and never had a rerelease - it's now very expensive).

As a Lego fan, but primarily a Transformers fan, I’ve never had this Brittle Brown issue happen to me. I have however had the Transformers community’s version of this called Gold Plastic Syndrome where it’s basically the same concept. The dyes they put in those older figures’ gold colored plastic made it more brittle and thus prone to cracking and breaking over time and use. I had this happen with ROTF Mindwipe where his foot transformation joints are. Haven’t broken off yet, and still sturdy feeling, but there is major crackage.

The first piece to break on me wasn't even Lego, rather it was Mega Bloks in brown. 2×16 plate in which I only had one of. But the first Lego piece I had disintegrated on me was the glow in the dark teeth from a shark set from 2004.

I'm surprised that I never heard about "brittle brown" until recently. I had hundreds of lego sets growing up, and they definitely got their use, but never had a single brown piece break.

Me neither, and the explanation is simple: they were only used for a short period of time, when I was a small child, and never since. The collector's idea of shelf life for the pieces is beyond fathoming for someone like you or me.

I've had quite a few dark red parts break over the years, good to know they identified the problem. Now they just need to work on colour matching bricks instead of shades of the one colour. Great video, thank you.

Probably the worst thing I ever did was tried to use brown LEGO pieces with generic knockoff pieces. The slight irregularities are enough to break each piece, especially when trying to take apart. I eventually gave up and threw them all away.

If they were so worried about them getting into the wrong hands, Lego could have taken a die grinder and just wreck the surfaces where the ABS would be injected.

They could have done a lot of things, but Lego has a certain earned rep as a company, so you can believe that what they did was both cost-effective and in line with the regs of the era. There were probably a lot of hunks of metal just getting tossed into the ground or into foundations at the time without much thought put into reuse or recycling.

I've had many reddish brown, dark red and dark blue parts break, shatter or crumble over the years, without any stress being put onto them. I've had other colours break too, but only a few.

Never noticed this particular issue. I did have a brown plate break on me recently though, but that was the first time I remember it happening. What I'm more familiar with are the fragile ball socket joints of later G1 BIONICLE figures. The 2008 redesign was particularly brittle no matter what colour was used. I've actually developed a strategy for assembling those to reduce the likelihood of breaking them. Simply apply pressure on the outside of the socket to counteract the expansive force of the ball being inserted/removed. Don't just jam them in or yank them out as you would the older ball sockets. You'll know right away if you were successful as an intact ball socket will make a dull popping sound whereas one that just broke is a sharp snap, one that's already broken hardly makes any sound at all. I have a rather sizeable collection of loose bricks from the 60s & 70s, which I got from my mom, that I rarely use for fear of breaking them. Blue is the most brittle colour in those bricks. White has a tendency to warp but rarely breaks. I recently bought a bag of loose bricks that included a white brick from that era that was so misshapen that attempting to connect it to any other brick in any fashion would have constituted an illegal connection.

as a bionicle fan my only problem colors were dark red and lime green and the dark red was more a problem with specific pieces from a specific period rather than a systemic issue, lime green however was a pretty widely affecting problem in later years

Lego pieces were always prone to breaking. I have several of the old 1 block high baseplates (10x20) that had cracked in half and are held together with 80s glue :D also happened to the plate modified 6x16 with the cutout, which was often used in trains and some sci-fi sets.

I never had any "briddle brown" pieces by now, however that time period is still a bit low in my collection. What I have however are lots of broken pieces from the early 1980s - back them Lego ha a lot of molds, which were just very fragile by design, which is also, why many of them were quickly replaced and we now have the fourth generation clips.

Burying the molds is not the best way to keep them out of competitors' hands. It's way more effective to melt them down and reuse the metal to make new molds

In the how the toys were made documentary from netflix there is a Lego episode. In the beginning of this episode, they were burying old Lego molds and putting concrete on top of them. I have surprised that this approach was real.

Every Lego set I own/have owned all had the same issue with the brown bricks. Doesn't matter how careful you are while assembling, because EVENTUALLY they will break. I became so frustrated that I outright replaced everything brown with a color that was suitable for the build. With the one exception being the palm tree cone shapes you typically find in a lot of the vintage castle/pirates sets I did away with brown Lego parts, as I now consider it a non canon color.

I don’t think Lego sell at prices comparable to the brick as there’s some like the ship in a bottle which would be incredibly cheap per piece but that’s only because the majority of the bricks are just flat 1x1s

Yeah so i never new this was a problem, until i was dimantling and cleaning an old model, last year, that i hadn't touch since it was made. I was detiling it when one of the dark-red 1x4 tiles just snaped, and later in another set a reddish-brown plate splintered at the edge. I didn't know it was a whole issue and i was just so parranoid about every following brick I removed, worried they would snap on me.

I and some friends have some sets from 90s and often the minifigs would crack all over the place and we didnt even used these. Mine stayed in a display cabinet for 5 years then I had to move and when I was packing is when I 1st realized that all my minifigs cracked. So this is not news nor is limited to certain color. That was the same reason why many couldnt care less to buy expensive cracking LEGO again even back then, and rather buy cheaper knock offs or alternative toys because oddly enough they were of better quality or made parts LEGO didn't made etc. LEGO was never really that good quality of a product as one would believe and most of us in Europe couldn't even afford it so when a expensive toy breaks people here move to other things ...

0.001mm tolerance? For Plastic? That is incredible if true. I can tell you, as a mechanical engineer who apprenticed in injection mould making, that that is NASA Space Station levels of precision. The precision for moulds themselves sits at 0.01~0.05 mm, which is already very tight. I have to say I doubt the 1/1000 mm precision you said. But yeah, I have a 1994/5 set that had random pieces added to it over time bc my mom found them in the trash (true story). Save for the studs that are worn, it works flawlessly with yhe newer parts.
