Looking back, it's very interesting thinking of how Lego's decisions influenced my play style as a kid. My siblings and I would set up massive battles between Star Wars rebels vs empire, or pirates vs the British, and have them kill each other left and right. Yet in our city builds and playing, I can't remember ever having cops kill the criminals; we would only have them arrest them. I wonder if that would be different if city police sets had come with guns, and I wonder if that would've changed the way I saw real-life police at all. Maybe not, but who knows, kids can be very impressionable.

Good comment. My lego police and robbers were loaded up with star wars weapons and such. I definitely played with them quite violently at times. But I'm still a very peaceful and not aggressive person and I'm against war and killing in real life. I think it's healthy for kids to express violence in play so that they can process and come to terms with and develop opinions about all the violence in the world and in history and so that those instincts don't get suppressed in an unhealthy way.😊

One thing to note: While the V-22 Osprey doesn’t have any civilian variants, there is at least one civilian tilt rotor aircraft on the market, the Bell Helicopter/AgustaWestland AW609. It is essentially the exact opposite of the Osprey regards to its role, as it only comes in a civilian variant. So the use of fictional tilt rotors in civilian roles within the City line might not violate LEGO’s military equipment and weapons policy after all. Though a Technic set literally called the V-22 Osprey is kind of pushing things.

I feel like this rule or guidelines is something best decided intuitively and not with a hard rule. I work at a convenience store thats been held up at gun point. A set where a bandit steals gold from an old West Bank is separated enough from the modern day is almost feels like fantasy. Especially when the internal logic of stealing gold is so far away from a modern robbery. but making a set where a robber uses a realistic gun to hold up a store and then the police use realistic gun to shoot that guy, it just doesn't sit right. It feels too close to the real security camera footage I have watched of my own co workers having guns put in their faces.

I've always been cool with Lego's choice to avoid modern weapons and vehicles. And honestly if they did allow that stuff, it would cause a serious shift in what fans wanted. Many of us are happy as things are but there are those who would love to see stuff like shown at 10:37 as real sets. The thing is if you open that Pandora's Box then I'm sure fans would start clamoring for Call of Duty and whatever other FPS games with overly elaborate gun loading animations are popular. That would really change the whole landscape and not in a good way. Lego is charming for its innocence as it's presented. Those custom parts are fine too. It's not official Lego so it's always isolated to whoever gets it.

This is a slight misconception about America. The US has way more gun violence, and way more literal guns, but both are because average gun ownership is skewed by a small population that owns a lot of guns. Your random everyday American hasn't ever held a handgun, and most haven't even seen one in person before (except in the holster of a cop, also a problem). The US's cultural relationship with guns (where we like to see them and where we don't) is in many ways the same as it is in the rest of the "civilized world."
@JonCrs10

@Mark_LaCroix plus America has the whole "Second Amendment" thing which has had 200+ years of cultural influence regarding private ownership and use of firearms. @Mark_LaCroix I think you underestimate how casual gun ownership is in the US. Over the last decade gun purchases and ownership has ballooned upwards of 60%, with largest percentage being women. Along party lines Republicans are largely the same, but Democrats have slowly been inching up from 36% in 1999 to roughly 53% as of 2022. Most Americans do have a passing knowledge and first-hand experience with a gun. How vocal they are about it is a very different matter. You're right in that public regard to guns is changing. Chances are most of your neighbors have a gun, but they're much less likely to bring it up or flaunt it. Here in California, a very heavily restricted state, well over 70% of the population owns a fire arm of some kind.

It's an interesting topic to debate. Lego doesn't allow realistic military weapons or builds that reflect real life military hardware, yet lots of builds are based on or entirely lifting designs from militaristic blueprints. There's the one fighter jet build that's red white and blue and the sets mentioned in this video. Not to mention whole lines like Mars Mission, og Lego Agents, Exo Force, and Bionicle as a whole. Giving militaristic and/or sci-fi fantasy designs bright vibrant colors and slightly changing the shape of a few parts here and there often times results in a kid-friendly product for most companies, as far as I observe. An argument could be made that because Lego is catering pretty hard to adult builders/collectors lately, they should separate their products into adult and kids' branches. Adults can get the more realistic side of Lego; insane part counts, collector value, book length instructions, and mature subject matter like war or historical accuracy, while kids get the bright and whimsical side; simple builds, tiny paper instructions, small to moderate part count, bright vibrant colors, and wacky zany fun and adventure. I'm not saying that kids and adults should be separated from lines like City or Ninjago or the many licensed lines. What I'm saying is adults should be able to have more realistic and complex builds that complement their proclivities and interests and challenge the mental side of building, while kids should have something that challenges their imagination yet doesn't glorify conflict or inspire ideas of "this robber has a gun, let's make him shoot the cops like I saw on the news." Many argue that's what Lego's already doing with the UCS lines and the many architecture and historical builds, but it would be really cool to see an official branching off point where adults have the freedom to put together an accurate historical event like D-Day for example, while kids get more Mixels or something like that.

IIRC the makers of Bionicle have actually mentioned in interviews that LEGO originally opposed the characters having weapons at first. To get weapons into the theme, they were rebranded as "Toa Tools", and were supposed to have as much of a focus on non-combat actions like climbing and swimming as combat. Even the developers of the Mata Nui Online Game were restricted in showing combat, and were specifically mandated to not show characters striking each other.

One has to wonder what the line is.. If WWII counts as 'present day' but WWI doesn't, and that statement was issued in 2010, then in theory it's about 90 years before things are no longer 'present day'. So in five or six years we should start seeing some models of that fantastical bygone era of early WWII. It'll certainly be out of living memory. Kids certainly aren't going to remember seeing the Blitzkrieg on TV. Should be fine, right?

A minor technicality about the Indiana Jones sets. The first three Indiana Jones movies take place in the late 30’s (Raiders is set in 1936). Germany did not invade Poland and thereby start WWII until 1939, so the Indy sets, in addition to being license property and fantasy, have a third layer of protection.

I would of loved if LEGO had the license to make a 1980's G.I. Joe line. Although the show was based on the military, it was also what you would consider "fantasy". LEGO is missing out on making so many sets based on 1980's toys, cartoons and shows.

"embrace weapons in fantasy uniiverces" more like "gimme the money this franchise brings, if it aint modern its good enough" by the by you can make a weapon and brick built guns if you want more firepower, lego is about building so you can make Panzer 3 in desert camo, italian and polish tanks where this yellowish color, americans had these brownish tanks, yeah you cant make a russian vehicle or a grey german one but still, if people want war they will turn to mega blocks call of duty and halo, and to be honest i absolutely love their sets, lego compatible too and thats from personal experience, for example outfit a lego ship hull with mega blocks style weaponry and you have an amazing piece of equitment.

I had some 5-6 years when I got my first lego sets (one of which was a space minifig pack ) that had one of those "space gun" / camera pieces. My furst take on it, withoiut anybody telling me, was that it was a bazooka (it was shoulder mounted and had a crosshairs to see where you shoot it). I think children have way more imagination than they ever thought. Those 1x2 plates as guns in the cowboys set would have been enough for kids to understand.

That Lego camera piece is great because it's easy to customise depending on the setting. It's easily recognisable as a large video camera or CCTV camera in a modern city but it also works as a futuristic rocket launcher or scanning device in a space theme. Not surprising that Lego is more willing to bend its morals when licenced themes are involved... Although there's one City set in which a police officer has a gun. Lego claimed it was a baton but that guy with the body armour and aviator sunglasses was definitely dressed to blast some bad guys (or shoot out their tyres, at least) A T-bar would have worked better as a tonfa. I wish the dynamite factory set came out. That could have had some fun play features. Hopefully instructions get leaked if they're not available already.

I find the reason policy in itself admirable, however, people should not be too sensitive. In Germany for example, a country with very low gun violence, one of the most popular toy producers, Playmobil, regulary sells police sets with guns and it doesnt seem to have any major negative impact on the kids.

Yea... I guess it's education and parenting around such toys that make or brake kids. Of course kids reenact fighting. Either with figurines, toy weapons to wield oneself or in such basic ways as fencing with sticks. Fencing with sticks or other stick-like objects seems to be a rather instinctual part of childplay... Whatever parents (or adult role models in their lives) teach them about the world and on proper behavior, laws, rights and duties is the actually important stuff. Thats were kids are truly set up for who they will become...
