@astranger448 Жыл бұрын
I can make a good guess tho. This set might not look like the real thing but it is safe. Lego could have made a realistic crane with an adjustable counterweight and long realistic booms and jib. Problem is one I encountered with a crane I build myself, the load dropped and the whole crane turned into a trebuchet. I could have gotten the hook in my face and lost an eye. Not something Lego wants to sell or Liebherr wants to be associated with. A 'safe' is something else.

If Lego arn't careful they will start producing sets that are made up of 5 HUGE pieces that clip together like a "normal" kids toy. I was surprised at the new big yellow and grey pieces that could have been built using existing parts instead of yet more new tooling adding to the price of the set.

As a technic fan, I would buy this set if it is convincing. But for me the fascination comes from the technic. Like the 42055 excavator that drives everything from one motor. This set was really on the edge and the mechanic has recently given up, because my nephew played too much with it, but it was great technic. And putting 5-7 motors into a big plastic set is actually boring. Due to the limiting factors of lego, like plastic gears and not enough power for the motors, it is not really that much fun to play with these big sets. Mould king has done it much better.

Lego isn't a low-income hobby. Most Lego YTers are sitting one almost half a million or more USD in Lego. BrickTsar (for example) isn't even part of the LAN, yet has hundreds of thousands in Lego (he has over 1600 of the same set).
@buildingtogether4171 Жыл бұрын
True, and that's something I think about quite a bit (now that we have a YT channel). There's always the pressure to buy more and more Lego for the channel, but then you end up with some sets you end up not liking very much. But in collecting, and building with, Lego for 35 years, there are definitely sets that represent good value across the various price ranges. This is not one of them!

Great video. From other videos I've seen on this set the counterweights are useless. They don't have enough counterweight to support the model when lifting even light objects when the boom is extended outwards. Here in Australia, the set costs $1049.99 and I didn't even realize the set had been released as it was never advertised and I only noticed it as someone had posted their finished model on Facebook. Plus the scale doesn't look right, the boom looks too short and the end of the boom looks weird as if it's not finished off properly. Also, I think they should have used the Cattapilar Tracks from the 42131 bulldozer

@HydroWorldOutlookPrimary5769 Жыл бұрын
Most non-motorized sets do not sell as well as those that are motorized because they often either a) do not have as many functions or b) require more effort to operate, which detracts from the quality of the product for some consumers. Additionally, they actually use more pieces than motorized sets because they require longer driveshafts to knobs on the outside of the model for control, versus connecting a shorter axle directly to a motor.

My personal theory concerning the liebherr. Lego wanted to release it last year. Then there were problems to reach a certain length of the crane. The redesign of the crane is surely a main cost factor. But in the end the crane will fail anyway. 700$ or 680€. For that money i would always buy the lego titanic. When the titanic gets EOL, the price for titanic will go trough the roof. Ok. My personal thoughts. And another big problem. The liebherr is controlled by an app device. And what about in ten Years… 😊 keep up the good work.

I think there is a big difference between Liebherr and, say, Disney. For Disney I know they have to pay Disney for the rights to release the sets. For Liebherr or even BMW I think they should see it as promotional for their brand, so I expect a better price. Supercar manufacturers are a different story, but should still mostly be seen as brand promotion - if you ask me (and why would you?).
@buildingtogether4171 Жыл бұрын
It definitely could be brand promotion, and I admit I don't know the details of the agreement. But I also know that brands don't just lend out their likeness and clout for nothing. Even if it is a mutually beneficial arrangement, Lego is likely paying some amount (even if it's much smaller than Disney/Marvel/DC/etc) for the rights to use their name to sell a set.

This set won't be a success for the company. Whether it will be a success with fans will depend on how much the price will drop. I get your point about the 700 US, it's overpriced; even more for a person like me where lives in a country where the dollar has way more value that the local currency. That being said, I would recommend that you to understand first the engineering behind this and from my perspective of the value of having this in scale. Are you aware of the different (real) configurations of this crane and the massive weights it can handle?. The cost per brick or due to the weight just made me lose the interest in this video...is just BAH!, next!

I don't think this Lego Technic Set 42146 will "bomb" -- it makes a GREAT parts pack to supply 40 ea. new, braced Technic Frames and 6 ea. Control+ motors. I can see people making draw bridges out of these pieces, after they're finished building the crane. Considering that the huge, $680 USD Lego Titanic Set 10294 will just sit on a shelf, the playability of the Liebherr Crane is much greater.
@willd.4808 Жыл бұрын
That's true, but the fairly new PAB option on the Lego site means it's more viable to just order the parts you want by themselves without needing to shell out all that money for a set with parts you don't want. The only reason to buy the set for parts is because you don't have to wait a month for the non-bestseller elements to get to you

The individual pieces are massive to build the columns and sheer size of the model, advanced functions, and expensive pieces like numerous motors and counterweights are very specialized, including the app to use this all. I hate to kill the mood but I'm gonna argue your opinion. The forth of July (my first critique) is not celebrated world wide, nor is the defect called the NFL. The world is not only the United States. So while yes it MIGHT fail, so too will the CAT D11. Not everyone is gonna buy the two sets you mentioned. yes you might be sacrificing purchasing power but (my second critique) is that not everyone shares the same interests. For $700 I can get two 1:300 scale warships from COBI, both are over 2,000 pieces (The exclusive Iowa set, and the exclusive Yamato set for those who want specifics), or 10 from Tamiya, Revell, Fujimi, etc. when it comes to buying from LEGO directly, they HARDLY make sets I like. They stopped making decent trucks from the City line a few years back, and only release a handful of Speed Champion cars (one or two I may actually get in a given release if at all) a year. I am already at a net-negative ordering from Lego directly because of my interests, and secondly I don't think it will fail as much because (critique three) there are ALOT of construction equipment fans out there. Nobody (as far as I'm aware) has a model of the LR 13000 crane for sale except for Lego at the time of writing this, this is in contrast with the Liebherr mining excavator, and CAT D11, where both are made as die-cast models in various scales. (Critique four) With how big Lego is, you gotta think BIGGER than the red box with the friendly letters. Lego made the Triple E class, and not many lego fans got it, but those who are into ship models outside of Lego DID, and by ALOT. Lego's Titanic only succeeded because Cobi is known for military models, otherwise the lesser detailed, but more easily displayable 1:300 scale Titanic would have wiped the floor with Lego's rendition, and that's also ON TOP of the plastic modeling community. I tend to see Lego as a bit of a bridge between what's available, and what is not. Lego offers what many wont, but what Lego wont, others do. While yes it will fail the Lego community, I think it will succeed if you look bigger. Someone did the first model (I'm aware of), and it happens to be Lego, now to see if the LR 13000 becomes a die-cast 1:50 scale model, and a highly detailed one at that.

@buildingtogether4171 Жыл бұрын
Maybe, but it's still better than using price per piece, which is not rooted in any valid measure of "value" (given the discrepancy in piece size). Obviously, there are other factors, such as licensing, time spent in development, etc. However, I do recall seeing an analysis on one site (Brickset, TBB, or some such site) from years ago that examined the correlation between price and weight versus that of price and piece count. The price-weight correlation was much stronger.

Sorry, but the only failure here is your analysis. Firstly your comment about the counterweights is so far off. Counterweights are as elementary to a crane as its boom is. Do you really think they quickly developed the weights because - surprise surprise - the crane fell over without them??, and they surely aren't responsible for the price increase. The mistake you made is common among most reviewers, because they don't know anything about marketing, sales, and business in general. Lego has a small army of specialist who exactly determine how much a product will cost, and believe me, material costs are just minor part in this calculation. Prices normally reflect the demand. Secondly, a high price makes product more exclusive and thus more desirable. Lego already won because of the massive coverage of this set receives around the net. My prediction is that these sets will fly off the shelves, and for those who aren't willing to pay the MSRP, just wait 2 years, and buy it 40% off.

There is a whole other angle to the counterweight/size thing. I once built a 'right' sized crane with lego and started fooling around with weights and counterweights. Long story short, the load slipped, turned the crane into a trebuchet and sent the hook flying. With some bad luck I could have gotten that hook in my face. Not something Lego is going to sell. But it makes for a clunky crane.

Interesting video! This is not the set for me, but I'm always happy to see that when it comes to Lego, there is something for everyone and every taste. There have definitely been some overpriced flops lately like the massive Hulk Buster and the mega Black Panther bust. Like the other two sets mentioned, if fans of it can just hold off a bit, they'll likely be able to get it for 30-40% off.

The price maybe make sense to lego since it is complicated and loaded with expensive parts, both plastic and electronics. But I think lego need to think about re-evaluating their prices. I think its pretty cool LEGO is making these large extravagant sets, but I do not really know who this is for. Its scale is beyond LEGO city collectors. And for a Major crane enthusiast for the price I would think you could get something made out of metal that could lift much heavier things and work much better as a remote control model. If it were not for LEGO building big I likely would not have gotten the Lions knight castle, which is my first set bought in over 25 years.... I think it is the best thing they ever created in terms of beauty, scale, play ability and fun for all ages. I really like the El dorado fortress too, but the problem is that it is so similar to my original one I have Its hard to justify the cost for it, even though had I not my old set would be a must buy.... but could be regrettable later if LEGO does more with these classic lines.... which I would like them to release a full schedule for knights and pirates.
