Hey Kyle. The EV3's lifespan really lines up w/ when I started teaching middle-school robotics (2014). I didn't realize it was a new product at the time. I also much say that your channel was a really big help in those early days; I hadn't studied robotics but was tasked to teach the class. Your tutorials helped me and my students a ton. This video, in retrospect, seems like an apology for Lego. Personally, I find the minimal reverse compatibility of Mindstorms to be a big limitation. Instead of increasing compatibility with the Lego ecosystem, and widening the number of sensors and outputs for Mindstorms, each lego education release is separate and attempts to make previous versions obsolete. Lego has been spending incredible amounts on sustainability research into its plastics. But isn't one of the best ways to achieve this is to stop creating these short-termist releases and give users a reason to never throw away their bricks?

In my opinion, I don't think Spike Prime or Robot Inventor is an upgrade for EV3, I feel like it should be a side product since both products have their pros and cons. Like the EV3 has a bigger screen, daisy-chaining, better motors, better specs(can run programs faster). While the Spike Prime has more compact sensors and hubs, with a built-in gyro sensor.

These are all fair points and there is certainly room for different perspectives. Spike Prime and 51515 make a lot of "lateral steps" from the EV3 and pursue some different goals than the original LEGO MINDSTORMS. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

In November 2015, Lego Education had a fire sale on retired NXT stuff. I picked up a bunch of stuff steeply discounted back then that I've been very happy with and am hoping to do the same with EV3 sets. That may not be possible if they are looking to liquidate the last of their stock in July via partners (instead of doing it themselves), as suggested by the post Kyle referred to, but I'm going to keep watching the store just in case.

@Commenter Unfortunately you can't combine 51515 with any past MINDSTORMS just because the components are physically incompatible. As for combining NXT with EV3, check your local FIRST organization's rules, but it should be alright.

I've been waiting for the new release to get a LEGO robotics product. I just found out about this while community when I became an FLL Jr coach by accident 😆 Seems like LEGO rolls over their robotics every seven(ish) years, and I came in at year 5, so I went all in with the 51515 set.

I was starting to like the new system until the permanent shutdown of the EV3 platform was officially announced. Now I wish that the EV3 could stay around longer. Once the EV3 goes out of production in June, the price will be ridiculously inflated, and it may be impossible to get one for a reasonable price.

It's certainly sad to see the EV3 go, but no product can stay around forever. I encourage you to bring an open mins to the new MINDSTORMS and don't let the EV3 going away sour your impression of the new one. You might find you enjoy the new one more if you give it a chance!

My workplace is lucky enough to have several EV3 kits and expansion kits. The EV3 was never perfect, it was way over priced, inaccurate, and its original visual language was horrid, but somehow we got by. The new block based programming gave EV3 a new and practical lease of life. It now visually resembles a conventional programming paradigm rather than a convoluted representation of it. Rather than just ending it, I wish Lego would support and enhance it, refining it into something that was both cheaper and more accurate. I hope that what replaces it is just as flexible but more accurate and affordable, especially when faced with cheap Micro controllers such as Arduino. What Lego needs to work on most is accessibility, so that it can be affordable to more than the middle classes and up, but also that its color detection, and rotational awareness. I was going to purchase an EV3 18 months ago for my kids, I'm so glad I did not as I would be raging right now.

The Spike prime platform ist the better solution for education these days. Out of the box you have all you need to have a "easy" start. Install , turn one , start to learn. All systems and platforms will evolve one day. Is there anybody out there sad about the fact we dont have Win3.11 anymore ?

My only problem is every generation has new connectors with no backwards compatibility which is real shame - lego as building platfrom was always about compatibility and interconnectability and they have got electronics part so wrong :/ ... i would be more inclined to buy new set if it did not ment i would need to "toss away" all those most expensive parts from the older one.

That's probably most people's biggest (valid) hesitation. It's the biggest double-edged sword. The new connectors allows the LEGO 51515 hardware to be smaller and more compact, but at the same time throws the backwards compatibility out the window. Big positives, with one big negative.

Hi Kyle. For me personally, very sad news and this for two reasons: It has been only since a few months that I have been active with EV3 and I have grown very fond of it. Parallel to my first building efforts I discovered your tutorials and have found them to be very useful and very well explained (the math is sometimes complicated for me) and 2 days ago I joined your supporters on Patreon. Later on I saw your announcement. Will you stop, now, to make tutorials on EV3? This will even be worse news. I hope you will be ready, still, to help me solve this programming problem: In a plotter I command 2 large motors to do the X Y movements with the move tank block. Successfully drawing a square, an octangle and a 16 faces shape (the lengths of the faces defined by degrees) I noticed that, to achieve the changing angles, the motor speeds, on motors A and B, have to go up and down, alternatively, in a rhythm. Doing the right math I could go on and draw a 32 faces shape and so on. Willing to draw a circle (or a curve) I feel that I need a program containing a formula that continuously regulates the motors speeds up and down, + and - , in a rhythm and I need some factor to replace the degrees that define the size of the shape. This decision actually has nothing to do with this announcement; I haven't published consistent EV3 tutorials in two years because I have already ready been covering the EV3 for four years, and I have covered just about every topic about the EV3 at this point.

I can certainly help answer your question: I think you are trying to draw a circle with your X/Y axes? To accomplish a circle, you will need the trigonometric functions sin(t) and cos(t). If you want to draw a circle of radius R, assign your motor's X-axis power value to R * cos(t) and your Y-axis power value to R * sin(t), where t is a degree value (from 0 to 360) or a radian value (from 0 to 2pi) that defines the period of your circle. You should vary both of these values simultaneously based on the same t-value. This will make your robot trace out a circle in the counterclockwise direction, starting at the "3-o'clock" (right most position). Hi Kyle. Thank you very much for the guidelines you sent for programming an EV3 plotter to draw circles/curves. Since receiving them I have tried numerous times to implement them, but alas to no avail. I get the X Y plotter to draw various lines, most of them being radiants going out from the center in various directions (as I try out different values for the R ant T, on the X and Y motors). Few of the lines start straight and then make a turn, again straight. I read the material you suggested (a very good tutorial indeed) but found no practical help there. I have used 2 large math blocks, fed them with R and T values from variable blocks and set the formulas to: a*cos(b) and to a*sin(b). C and D remained 0 values and to be on the safe side I have tried changing the formula to: a*cos(b)+C-D , which made no difference. I guess I misunderstood your guidelines. I'd wish someone would be willing to elaborate on the topic of drawing curves. Emanuel

Hi Emanuel, maybe another thing you can try is setting the motor positions using these equations. So set the x-axis motor to the value a*cos(t) and the Y-axis motor to a*sin(t) and update the positions continuously for each value of t?

What do we do now? Use EV5. Its a Chinese EV3 ripoff. So before you buy it theres pros or cons. Pros: cheaper, looks the same, colored screen with touchscreen.. Cons: -2 buttons, its on Chinese, starter kit is quite expensive, long delivery. Aldo my box came demaged so your can be demaged too. Nothings insidde the box wad demaged so thats ok. You can absolutely use any spare LEGO Technic you have to supplement what is included in the LEGO 51515 set; it uses just regular Technic elements that are the same as any other LEGO set. Currently, there is no (official) way to daisy chain, but my friend at AndysTechGarage figured out a clever solution to this, you can watch here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enPTZKGcbbdqY9U I don't think most people will actually miss those two ports we lost ;)

Hi. I'm new to Teaching Robotics to a grade 5/6/7 class and have acquired a class set of EV3 Robots. I know they are discontinued but want to still use them as they likely are still working and the software still seems to be supported. I think it's a great opportunity for the kids to learn some Robotics and Coding, but would love to hear your suggestions on where to start, what projects or challenges (I know there are a lot out there). I am getting into MINDSTORMS with the 51515 set but I have a question. Can the motors break the pieces? For example when experimenting with a build or program and the motor goes past what is it supossed will it break the pieces near it.

Spike is better for home use. But EV3 is 10 times better for FLL. 😢 8 sensors vs 7...

Maybe a matter of opinion, but Spike has its own merits for FLL use that should not be overlooked! Consider that the built in gyro for Spike Prime / Robot Inventor 51515 has more axes and is way better (less drift, more reliable) than the EV3's. Maybe I have an opportunity to convince you in future videos!

So far, FIRST of Tennessee is the only organizer (to my knowledge) that has stated they will retire the EV3 for FLL 2021. I presume that most districts will continue to allow the EV3 to compete, but I encourage you to reach out to your local organizer for clarification.

I recommend contacting your local FIRST org to see if they will continue to allow the EV3. If so, you can wait. LEGO Edu customer service will continue supporting the EV3 until 2023 and the modules will be available in an archive.

Between 51515 and Spike Prime - they are pretty similar and you won't go wring with either. The main advantage of 51515 is that it includes 4 motors, but Spike is more commonly used in edu settings. Hope this helps!

I mean, this was inevitable since the announcement of the 51515 robot inventor. Personally my favorite is still the NXT! I have many great memories with the NXT and i still use it regularly to this day! I love programming in NXC with the NXT

My son made a lot of sample robots out of the EV3. He was sad to see this retirement, and still has the EV3. I expect no more updates, and replacement parts still available on stores other than LEGO Education. Do we get to keep it?

i started with RCX, then NXT and then EV3. As an engineer and mentor I like to see the evolution of new technology and new products. However, now that I am in academia I am concerned for those like me that have purchased many units in order to use them in class. I hope I can use them for at least the next 5 years so that I can have a good ROI. I am sure that the administration will not allow for me to purchase 40 units of the new generation anytime soon.

I still need two more EV3 kits for a big personal project I'm working on, so I'm probably not going to move on to the newest Mindstorms for a while, if ever. 51515/Spike Prime are fine for what they are, but they aren't what I'm looking for in a Mindstorms product. I might look at the next gen kit when it comes in approx. 7 years, though, we'll see. I just hope acquiring the rechargeable battery packs won't be horrifically difficult. Might have to prioritize those over the kits themselves, as while Amazon won't ship them to me, LEGO themselves will.

My most humble advice: whatever you need to buy, buy it now. prices will only go up as supply wanes. I'm half-afraid that this video may cause some panic buying and raise the price even more :P Rechargeable batteries will be extremely difficult to get ahold of, so prioritize those. Proceed judiciously, and good luck with your project!
