This is a neat build! I know it's mostly inspired by NXT 2.0 Alpha Rex, but I missed out on that kit; I mostly am reminded of the original NXT's Alpha Rex, from before our boy got an upgrade. I think someone made an EV3 robot based on the original Alpha Rex in one of those Mindstorms books that are out there on the market somewhere. I forget which book, and I don't know the robot's name. I love seeing humanoid walking robots like this and Alpha Rex, though. The ones that use wheels and/or caterpillars (Blast and EV3RSTORM, respectively) are neat, but I think bipedal walking bots are more impressive, even if they're generally harder to do.
@Unbrickme3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! The bipedal humanoid from ev3 you’re referring to is called Lava Rex, created by the legendary Laurens Valk.

@@Unbrickme Ahhh, that's the one! First time I saw it on the book cover, I felt a rush of nostalgia. I still don't own a copy of the book yet, but when I do get it, I'm building Lava Rex so fast. However, I'm gonna need to take a crash course in programming with a text-based language since I installed ev3dev to my EV3 P-Brick and EV3's original programming environment no longer works on my computer. Heh.

Hello Unbrickme. I have got to around page 282 of the build instructions for your beta rex robot. I thought I would connect the hub to a USB socket on my computer to try something with the motor for turning the robot's head. PROBLEM: the design does not allow the connection of a USB cable to the hub as it is blocked by the turntable gear for the head. How did you manage to program the robot, recharge the battery, debug etc when you cannot make a USB connection?
@Unbrickme3 жыл бұрын
I temporarily take the head off, then I put it back on
@donaldmcbride7723 жыл бұрын
@@Unbrickme It is not just a problem of the head. It is the black turntable gear which prevents insertion of the USB plug. Unless you have a special plug which is much less thick it is impossible to insert the plug. Does such a USB connector exist?
@donaldmcbride7723 жыл бұрын
Hello Again . I may have sounded a little abrupt in my first comment. Certainly it is a brilliant design and I thank you for taking the time to reply. But, if you look at page 284 of your pdf file of instructions you can see clearly that the gear teeth of the turntable obstruct the UBS socket of the hub. I cannot insert the USB plug into the socket without the risk of destroying the hub socket. Is there a technique to pop the black toothed part of the turntable from the grey component on which it turns?
@Unbrickme3 жыл бұрын
Donald McBride like, on the front of the head, you don’t have to take off the entire turn table, just take off the front beam and the front covering
@donaldmcbride7723 жыл бұрын
@@Unbrickme Hello Again. I have not yet built and put on the head. So there is no front beam and no front covering at the moment. As you can see in your own image/photo on page 284 of the .pdf file, the teeth of the turntable are in front of the socket. It is impossible to insert the socket as the teeth foul on the plastic moulding round the usb socket. I have followed the instructions exactly and the construction is exactly as shown in your pdf. To insert the socket i would need to use force to thrust it in slightly at an angle which would certainly ruin it permanently.

@JonasPetri4 жыл бұрын
@@Unbrickme Actually it's easy. There a few apps for designing LEGO models like LDD (LEGO DIGITAL DESIGNER) Ldraw and BrickLink Studio (or stud.io). I'm using Studio because it has a pretty good module for instructions. Nore Ldraw or LDD has a real module for it. But to my knowledge none of the apps i named has the Mindstorms Robot Designer (or Spike Prime) electronical parts, so until they add it i think it's better to do like you. For me that seems like much harder than to do digital instructions, at least with so big models. And i'm glad you diden't make VIDEO instructions, because i just hate instructions like that!

I finished the build. Your instructions were great! There were a few spots that were inconsistent but they were easily spotted in the subsequent steps. The robot works just as described! This is a great accomplishment! You should definitely submit it to LEGO for their current contest to develop a 6th robot for this set. I think I like the remote control code best. The robot moves very nicely although he tends to favor slightly moving to one side. I have calibrated each motor but it still happens. Also, the robot fell backwards when transitioning from a hardwood floor to a short carpet. It was actually funny to watch him fall and lose his head. LOL. Again, many thanks for making this available to the LEGO community!
