I can understand why people see the tetris style display as a downgrade from an actual screen but I think it will age much better than the previous models because its a timeless design. No matter how modern and expensive its hardware was, it would be outdated in a couple of years because technology just advances too quickly. Reducing it to the bare minimum and instead using your phone as an interface however will make it stay up-to-date for a much longer time. I think it was a great decision.

The FIRST Lego Robotics Invention System (yellow RCX) is so popular because it is very easy for kids to build a robot. It uses studded bricks which are so children-friendly. It even can be combined with LEGO City models children already had in their home for many fun projects. I remembered my students build sumo robots with laughters and big smile in their face. After LEGO change it into more Technic in 2006 and named it 'Mindstorms', children not having the same easiness as before. It operates better and better for each new releases, yes of course. But less fun and not as easy as the first.

the hub is identical in spike prime and robot inventor, they're just different colors. their selection of motors/sensors is different. robot inventor has 4 medium angular motors and 1 color sensor and 1 ultrasonic sensor, while the spike prime set has 2 medium angular motors, one large angular motor, 1 touch sensor, 1 color sensor, and 1 ultrasonic. The spike prime kit is designed for classroom use, which comes equipped with basic lesson plans and an organization tray. The robot inventor is designed for home use. The reason the EV3 boots so slowly is its booting an entire operating system. It runs on the GNU/Linux system, meaning it has to load a bunch of things before launching. Simply put, the EV3 boots up as an entire PC, which was intended so you could boot custom firmware from a MicroSD card.
@Unbrickme4 жыл бұрын
Actually, the main reason why it boots so slow is due to the incredibly slow ARM9 cpu. You simply can’t have a sophisticated operating system work together with a really slow processor. New hub runs microPython, which is much better for slow processors. My computer usually powers on much faster than the ev3, my iPhone powers up much faster than ev3. That’s because they have extremely fast processors to compensate for the more demanding OS

Ordered my new LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor set! Loving my EV3 and NXT 1.0 + 2.0! Really wish I had the original Robotics Invention System, but sadly didn't get my first Mindstorms until around 2007. Super impressed that out of all the robots I've owned since I was younger, the NXT 1.0 was not only the one that I still enjoy today just because it can be rebuilt and reprogrammed, but it also was pretty much the only one to actually be built to last 13+ years. Sadly, very few of the WowWee robots I've owned really lasted, and ones that did just got boring. Also, does the new Mindstorms brick remind anyone of an iPod Nano 7th gen or iPod Touch with the home button? And I've been playing with the programming software and cannot figure out how to get to Python programming.

On a phone call with Lego support the guy helping me told me that Lego won't be releasing another mindstorms kit for a while. Robot inventor is the EV3 replacement. He also said that there won't be any future software updates to robot inventor/spike prime to allow hub-to-hub bluetooth communication and they won't be implementing daisy-chaining. There's a chance that they told me the wrong info.
@Unbrickme4 жыл бұрын
No update for hub-to-hub daisy chaining? Oh man that’s not good. I loved daisy chaining on EV3
@sushsidnd4 жыл бұрын
@@Unbrickme I think Lego is aiming at a younger audience with Robot Inventor. The user experience is a lot better but there is less functionality for more advanced builds. It's probably a strategic decision since Vex recently released their V5 system and it seems to be doing really well in highschools which was the target audience of EV3.
@Unbrickme4 жыл бұрын
I like pretty much every aspect of the 51515 more than the EV3 besides daisy chaining. Daisy chaining really seems like a crucial feature and I don’t understand why lego decided to remove it. I’m still optimistic that lego will add official support for daisy chaining, or maybe a third party can come up with a daisy chaining method for the new system. Ultimately 51515 is meant to REPLACE the ev3, so I would assume that there is a future software update coming to support daisy chaining. The new powered up system seems to get updates once every couple months to add new fundamental features while keeping the hardware the same
@sushsidnd4 жыл бұрын
@@Unbrickme I hope you're right that a future software update will add daisy-chaining. Unfortunately the datasheet specifies that you can only have one bluetooth classic connection or four bluetooth low energy connections. Brick to brick pairing would require bluetooth classic so it would limit daisy-chaining to only one additional brick. The USB port of the new robot inventor can't be used as a USB host so it won't be possible to daisy-chain the bricks using USB. I highly doubt that Lego would let you use the IO ports for daisy-chaining since connecting ports on two different bricks would lead to a short circuit if both bricks aren't configured perfectly. So at best they will add bluetooth classic daisy-chaining but only with one additional brick.
@Unbrickme4 жыл бұрын
I looked at the specifications of the hub and I always assumed that the reason it supported up to four BLE connections was for hub-hub daisy chaining. Since there’s four connections one can be the host while the other hubs merely act as controllers of sorts. There could be 5 hubs, one main hub and the other 4 just control the motors/get inputs from sensors, sort of how the Powered Up system works. If daisy chaining cannot be done via Bluetooth low energy then lego definitely will not add daisy chaining. I always assumed that the BLE capability was created for daisy chaining, while Bluetooth classic is only used by the main hub to keep a connection to your computer. I’ve been using the 51515 ever since I first got it in October and from what I know there’s not even a way to connect 2 hubs together natively without some work arounds, since the software for scratch 3.0 doesn’t even have the Bluetooth commands “send message” and “receive message” so in some ways the new system is worse than not just the EV3, but the NXT also. To me, mindstorms is always the king of robotics since while the competition may have better specifications, Lego Mindstorms will always have the lego Technic building system

Can you do a more in depth comparison of sensors and motors? Specifically for use in competitions such as FIRST Lego League. Love the smaller size but if the motors are less accurate or have more slop that's a deal breaker for me.

@@Unbrickme for example one test would be how much it could lift (torque), another could be an error over distance test so basically run each motor 360 degrees then stop it and see how much error each has, then without resetting repeat that several times and see how much error builds up over time

Are you using an iPad Pro 12.9 inch screen? When I select one of the robots to build, the next screen says "GET STARTED" but the letter "D" is by itself below the rest of the text. Also it looks like when you charge the battery, the brick stays on. Is there a way to turn off the brick so the battery would charge faster? I tried holding down the large button and the brick turned off, but then it turned back on again.
@TinkeringJohn4 жыл бұрын
The app needed to update the brick, so I did that and later asked me to update it again. I played with the different eyes for Charlie, and now I can turn it off while the battery charges.

@@Unbrickme Thanks for the likes and the reply. What I was getting at, is on my 12.9" iPad, after I select which robot to do, on the next screen, the text "GET STARTED" is broken into 2 lines. The 1st line says "GET STARTE" and the 2nd line is just the "D" from the word "STARTED". It should either be "GET STARTED" all on 1 line, or the word "STARTED" on the 2nd line. The word "STARTED" shouldn't be split onto 2 lines. All the videos I've seen that shows this screen shows the word "STARTED" all in one piece. The video from LEGO at 1:20, shows it written on 2 lines. The video from Dimitri Dekyvere at 0:23 shows it all on 1 line. It's not THAT big of a deal, but something isn't right about it. I wonder if it is that way with others who have the 12.9" iPad Pro.
@Unbrickme4 жыл бұрын
TinkeringJohn might be because of an old iOS software. If you’re running the latest iOS, then it might be because of the 12.9 inch iPad Pro. I have a 16 inch MacBook Pro and the software works great on my computer so if the software is too much broken you can always use a computer

The plastic of the front of the hub seems to be very soft and can be easily scratched with a finger nail - which is not typical of any Lego part or previous versions of Mindstorms (I have NXT and EV3).
