Hey LEGO Maniacs! Today for Old School Wednesdays, we'll be journeying to the 1990s Ninja theme and taking a look at the Robbers Retreat...
This one is quite unique for the Ninja theme, we'll get into why and also take a look at its pros and cons
As always let me know what you guys think? Thanks for watching and may the brick be with you... always

Love the old ninja theme pre ninjago. The 98’ sets are my cup of tea. I picked this one up NIB a couple years ago.

In the ninja theme, the builds were always quite big. I've always wondered what all of them would look like together, maybe like some sort of mountain setting? No wonder they had those wings, they truly needed them to navigate from one building to another 😅. It kind of reminds me of the set 7417-1 Temple of Mount Everest, from the Adventurers Orient Expedition theme. I like the trap in this one, it's actually quite well made because it's built on a long plate, so there's actually some momentum building up when you release it. The victim, even when firmly clutched to the baseplate, doesn't stand a chance! Usually LEGO booby traps require the victim to be standing on a tile, so I appreciate this kind of detail. I didn't know the building was kind of modular, that's actually quite neat.

Haha thats a good point, if I end up having everyone I'll have to do a video with all of them together. And Adventurers is awesome! Love that theme as well

For many years, I had known of this theme, but hadn't known about what many of its sets were called. Ninja was the first theme to feature that particular variation of hinged door, though it only appeared in ten other sets besides this. The only set I ever had with it was the "Temple of Mount Everest" (7417) from Orient Expedition, where it was the fourth and final appearance of it in "Earth Orange". After that theme ended, it appeared in black in three sets between '05 and 2006, once in "Metru red" (New Dark Red) in a Knights' Kingdom II set (8877) in 2005, and once in "Reddish brown" in a "Fantasy Castle" set (7036) in 2007, before being retired entirely. This theme introduced the braided string piece with minifigure hand grips on it, and would appear in 15 other sets in green before it was retired eleven years ago. This set also marks one of only six appearances of the 3x4 25 degree roof tile in green, with it having been retired after appearing a the Creator Expert "Ferris Wheel" (10247) in 2015. Some other standard bricks in red, such as the 2x2x3 brick and the 2x10 brick were actually retired in 2018 and last year respectively. Even the 16x32 base plate in green was retired last year as well.

I had no idea this theme introduced so many new parts. I mean some of them like the banners, minifigs obviously. Interesting stuff 🔥

I really like the old school Ninja theme. I only have one set that I got most of from a very cheap thrift haul before I moved. Thankfully it's the biggest set in the theme, 6093 Flying Ninja Fortress. I have finished it after moving, but still need to match up the pre and post move pieces. I look forward to building it and checking it out closer. I'd like to get some more from the theme eventually.

I like this set, even though it isn't exactly my favourite of the Ninja sets. It works well as the Ronin's base and that booby trap is just bruuutal tbh. :-D A little funny thing I noticed: did you know there are two mould types of the Katana piece. One has an octagonal guard and the other has a square guard. The octagonal guard Katanas are the OG ones, the square guard Katanas come from the Ninjago Sets. The black Katana in your set is the square one for example, the gray one the octagonal guard Katana :-)

Same, still like the largest one the most I think. And what! Mine is 100% what it should be? This error is going to be in a number of my other Ninja sets I'm betting lol

It may not have the most polished build or most detailed minfigures but it has all aspects of a fundamentally good lego set. No gimmicks, no topsy turpy trendy exclusive minifigures, no trendy licence with no creative essence, just a relatively good in a good theme.

I ordered this set for 47 euros a couple of days ago. Even tho I love this theme, the polybags and smaller sets i really dont like, they are basicly nothing special, I consider them a add on more than a display Piece. Good review btw

Quite ugly. The colours don't go together well, lots of burps and the flag looks pretty bad too...
