Definitely recommend giving Netflix’s One Piece a shot as even as someone who isn’t a fan usually of live-action adaptations of anime. Eiichiro Oda (the mangaka of One Piece) was heavily involved with the behind the scenes of the show for both Season 1 and (the currently in production) Season 2 and you can tell just from how faithful it is while still being its own thing separate from the original manga and anime

You actually got me thinking: would this count as a “live action animated remake” if both the anime and the Netflix show are adapting a manga, which is a book? Everything the anime (except for the filler arcs) and the Netflix show adapt is from the manga, so in that case, can you classify Netflix one piece as an adaption of a comic, like how superhero films or Scott Pilgrim? I never thought of it that way but yeah, Netflix One Piece is more like a Scott Pilgrim-like adaptation of the original manga than a remake of the anime. In that way, the moral conundrums arnt really there as it is for most of these Hollywood remakes. It’s just two different productions both based off of a one comic, the two basically totally independent. I’d really appreciate your thoughts on this, I just thought of it and I’m not wondering lol

Technically, most of the other live action remakes from studios like Disney and Dreamworks are based on books too. The only difference is that One Piece is a graphical novel and not being remade by the same studio as the animation. But yeah, it does feel more like an adaptation than a remake of the anime which is one of the reasons why it’s so much better than those other ones.

I think the One Piece live action is genuinely pretty good, great by comparison to most LA anime. Even still, I do hope Lego will do the thing where they make regular sets for the new property, and then have one big expensive set be based on the source material. Same way they did with Ghostbusters/Jurassic Park, with a full wave for the new movies, and at least one huge D2C for the original property with all the classic characters/designs. We might just be seeing Going Merry (Netflix) as the $100 set, and the Thousand Sunny (the Straw Hats' later ship, not on Netflix and significantly bigger) as the 18+.

I’m generally against live action remakes, but I gave One Piece a chance, and while I have not seen the anime, I enjoyed Netflix’s version quite a bit. So yeah, give it a watch. While the designs in One Piece are a lot more whimsical and anachronistic than what I would hope for from a pirate LEGO theme, I’m always happy for more pirates in LEGO, so I’m curious to see how this turns out.

@@just2good the anime is just very very long and has real pacing issues. The manga is still the best way to get the intended story; but the Netflix is much easier to recommend. Actually, another studio are also doing a new anime adaptation of the manga that is going to be more one to one and not have the filler the anime does, and that’s coming soon. So in a way there is two one piece anime’s lol

As someone who has loved One Piece for a long time, watching the anime and up to date with the manga, I highly highly recommend the live action. It takes all the life, characters, and drama of the manga and anime and does them so much justice in live action. If you are thinking of getting into the world of One Piece I think the live action is one of the best ways to get into it. Also for pacing reason, as a fan those early chapters and episodes can be hard to get into cause of there pacing. So by all means please check out the live action. Also I loved the more proactive role that they gave Koby in the live action I definitely think it makes his journey engaging. Also who he is and becomes later on in the manga/anime is absolutely amazing and I hope to see that in the live action.

I think for those who wanted anime sets or figures should still be excited because the live action is very accurate to what the characters wear in the anime so you basically are getting the anime characters but you would probably have to swap some arms or heads around for that cartoony look. Also I’m willing to bet that even though their clothes will look 1 to 1 since they are from a more realistic setting the minifi colors will be very Muted.

I do love me some One Piece, I watch the anime on Toonami on Saturday nights, yes, I have been for over a decade with Toonami as a whole even if one piece wasn't always on the block, I am super excited for this, though I wish it was the anime version rather than the live action one, But Oda, One Piece's creator, has been heavily involved with the series, so it isn't crappy from what I heard unlike with Cowboy Bebop & Death Note & dare we mention Dragonball Evolution, I don't have interest with the live action series, but like I said, this is a step in the right direction. Getting licensed anime & manga sets from the true animation of anime has always been a dream of mine, heck I even have custom made figures of anime characters. Worth pointing out too that the only true licensed anime & manga set we got was the Ideas Voltron set in 2018, Speed Racer was based on the live action movie rather than the anime series, & Exo Force was anime & manga inspired despite being an original Lego Theme. RogersBase is gonna be excited about this for sure.

While I would have preferred it to be based on the original manga, I enjoyed the live action show I felt like they really honored the source material even with the limitations of it being a live action show. I’m surprised it’s getting a few sets, it proves how popular the show was and how big the property is for Lego to give it a bigger theme. Even if it is a western adaptation, I hope to see more Japanese representation in Lego

SHOCKING BUT PEAK! Please dragon ball.., Yeah the live action series is very good. It keeps the tone of the OG intact and adapts it with clear love for the original story. The creator of the manga is very involved in the LA series and has said he believes this is the best way to get his story out to as much of the world as possible, he thinks its artistically valuable. So yeah I hate LA remakes, but this is like the one major exception where it’s done super well.

You don't know how much I have dreamed of Lego One Piece. This isn’t just me thinking as a fan of the series (though I am one), but also as a fan of Lego. This would ring especially true if they adapt the manga/anime, though even if they stick just to the Live Action in the long run, mainly because One Piece has such a sprawling, creative series. You want classic Pirate sets? Adapt the early arcs or sonething like Enies Lobby where the Pirates vs. Marines stuff is more prominent. You want a deserty theme homagimg first year Adventurers? Alabasta has you covered (it even has a villain with a hook hand looking for a treasure for his own personal gain). Want something with a horror twinge ala Monster Fighters? Thriller Bark is right there! You want Chima back? Well, hop right on to the back of an elephant, we're going to Zou. One Piece has so much potential to not just be a pirate theme, but an all timer Lego theme with near infinite potential.

A few things to note, I don't really get the distaste for live action "remakes". Things have been adapted into live action for ever, I don't see how they are a disappointing concept. Just because Mulan wasn't great doesn't mean there haven't been good live action remakes. Like the Jungle Book was well received. And I know you bring up Wednesday here as a live action "remake" as if there wasn't a Live action Adams Family TV show in the 60s and then had another movie in the 90s. It's why I don't get why the distaste for another live action Adams Family show as if those didn't already exist. It's also not a remake, it's just another Adam's Family show. Like things just can be adapted to live action, like The Hunger Games Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes which was an excellent movie that was adapted from a book. Second, WOOOO, Netflix One Piece is a fantastic show, I highly recommend it. But once again, I don't see the distaste for it being live action? Like I said, things just get adapted to live action, just because it has an anime doesn't mean we should go "oh a live action show" just because Disney made some bad one. Especially since One Piece has had live action stage shows of years, yet no one gets annoyed by those. Basically, I just don't see the distain for live action adaptations as if we haven't been getting those for years. They used to just be a thing we got, but some Disney made some more overt remakes, now people don't like them. I haven't watched it because I don't do horror, but I heard the Netflix live action adaption of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (originally was a Manga) was really good from some friends. Then it got an anime and people like that more. I don't doubt the anime is good, but the Live action version was also good but now that gets caught up in this live action distaste for literally no reason. I also realized I got off topic and this was about One Piece lol. But my recommendation, watch the anime but know it has MANY flaws. The live action one is better from what my One Piece friends have told me. Not that the anime is bad though, it's jut very clearly a weekly shonen anime from the 90s and 2000s that's still going. The pacing is severally flawed to the point where there is a fan project made to re-edit the anime to give it better pacing. But don't worry, they are also doing an ANIME remake of the anime called "The One Piece". So you could wait for that to check it out.

I said Wednesday was a live action Netflix adaptation from a comic, relating it to the One Piece show - not that it was the only one. @@just2good Ahh yeah, my bad. But still my point, was that you sounded a bit harsh on Wednesday when it's just another Adams Family show. And really? Not any live action adaptations from any animated series? I get the ones from Disney. But there have been plenty before like the 2000s Scooby Doo movies that sure, I get not being a fan but they do capture the vibes of the shows really well. The first 90s live action TMNT movie has a large following. Even Ben 10: Race Against Time has a following. I'm a bit biased but I will argue the 2007 Transformers movie is good. As well as Bumblebee from 2018. Though I hope I'm not trying to sound like I'm hating or anything like that, I just really don't get condemning a whole genre that we've been getting forever with good adaptations because Disney made Aladdin with Will Smith. We used to just get live action adaptations and they were just fun things we got rather than something everyone hated.

Couple of things...first, as Gen-Xer, The One Piece manga just wasn't in my purview, so I have little attachment. I've seen parts of it, but it just wasn't "my thing" as I was too old when the anime blew up. That said, I know what it's like to love an IP. To that front, I quite enjoyed the live-action One Piece...it wasn't perfect, but there was enough pathos to win me over. I have very much the same reaction to Avatar: The Last Airbender but I DID rewatch the animated show and totally understood the draw (despite loving the live-action remake on Netflix). Again, as a serial nerd, I'm aware of these things, but just have an appreciation for the property and characters rather than attachment to them. (I know this isn't mind-blowing) but it sets it up for my second point...which was sort alluded to in the video...I'm here for the pirate stuff! So, bring it on. The last observation is that the PPP ratio (an unsophisticated measure of value) looks to be pretty good and it's great to see Lego giving OP the Fortnite treatment (based on PPP, that is). I imagine Lego wants to make...ahem...a SPLASH (😏) with a new theme. I also have a sneaking suspicion that this may also get a digital treatment as I know there are some OP games out in the ether and I'm sure OP has a fantastic opportunity for cross-marketing (just like Horizon and Fortnite)...which also explains why the licensing fees are much better. Lego's most successful foray into the digital space has ALWAYS been their video game treatments, and I suspect, they'll look to create new revenue streams (and cultural relevance in the digital space) by sticking with the action puzzler platform games.

The rumour is the 18+ will be based on the anime and not the netflix series, which if is true I assume the 18+ will be the 1000 sunny the ship they get later on where as the $100 is the going merry, their orignal ship. And if this is true rip to the guy who just got his 1000 sunny moc approved to ideas today, because one piece was one of the 250 new ips they just approved for ideas. Also the netflix series is great, so far it's been a near perfect adaptation. Keeping the goofy aspects from the manga/anime and adding references to things later in the series which weren't originally established. Plus it knows what to keep and what to cut for time because the franchise is looooong.
