These were the only pirate sets I owned for most of my early childhood and I loved them to bits. Even back then the choice of figure design confused me, but I had so much fun playing with these in and around water. I didn’t pay much mind to the “builds” of these sets and rather used the large baseplates and decorations to design my own landscapes to play on. The animals especially were a highlight for me. I also appreciated how quickly terrain could come together with the simplified building system as a young kid. I never thought I’d ever see a proper review of these sets, thank you so much for giving them the attention they deserve!

What a great video! I was deep into my dark ages when this came out and was dismissive of it since it wasn't a "real" pirate theme. I wish I had picked up more of them at the time though, since we eventually got more traditional pirate waves later on. I didn't realize just how many unique pieces there are. I now have most of the smaller sets, but I still need to finish parting out Skull Island and Captain Redbeard's Pirate Ship. Wish me luck! Fun piece of trivia: Captain Redbeard's Pirate Ship was named the "Hurricane" on the +4 website, which I always thought was a rather intense name for such a cartoonish little boat. Also, one of my favorite pieces of LEGO Pirate gear came out of this theme: it's a reversible pirate hat with Redbeard's jolly roger on one side and Kragg's on the other. I believe this was available in LEGO stores long after the theme was discontinued.

Thanks for showing off this theme in such detail, it made me smile! It's not as good looking as the regular Lego pirates ofc, but it's really nice as a 'dumbed down' version of it. As a kid I had the Lego City police boat which had the same orange motor you showed off, I rebuilt that ship with my own (terrible!) designs quite regularly for years, I guess the hull really spoke to my imagination for some reason. I see someone has already mentioned it, but yes, the curved red railing piece also came in 2001's Sopwith Camel and 2002's Red Baron (Fokker Dr.I), both times used as the engine cowling. Since my Camel hasn't been assembled in a long, long time, I swapped the railings from that onto Aero Nomad, and I gotta say... not a bad look. Anyway, I find the large hull pieces from Redbeard's Pirate Ship pretty intriguing, and I'd love to try building a "proper" minifig pirate ship on them. Especially with a second middle piece to stretch the ship, maybe make a three-master. They're six studs wider than the regular pirate ship hulls, so you get a lot more room to work with, and the below-decks space opens so many fun possibilities.

I remember getting the Skull Island set when I was like maybe...well I guess 4. (Guess my parents made an accurate call there) Frankly I don't even recall any memories of receiving it, it just kind of showed up in my box of legos one day. I'll be honest though, I just never quite fell in love with these, even for how endearing pirate toys were to me. The sets overall just felt very flimsy and awkwardly built. Lots of big and chunky parts that never quite held firmly onto each other, and had lots of bits and bobs that made me question what they were there for. The colors even confused me quite a bit. Like I get there was supposed to be a wooden raft, but the logs were black? Blue railing? Black docks with white feet? Why did the pieces have little pegs sticking out of them (These also *really* hurt to step on compared to typical lego). Why were there so many pieces to fit pins that just didn't use any? The minifigures were also quite alienating for someone who was forever in love with the typical designs. Just simply too tall, modeled facial features, and worst of all completely un-modular. The skull block piece was absolutely sick though, and I loved the little detail with the teeth. I felt it was very clever in its simplicity and always tried integrating it into my builds somehow. It was also pretty neat to get some of the little props in one whole set. Fire, snakes, spiders, a scorpion, a bat, a gold chalice, plants, and a big mast with a sail! OH! And the crocodile! Never did much with the guy, but I felt so proud just to own one!

It's a weird group of sets for sure. The single-piece figures certainly remain the most offensive part of the series in my opinion too. I mean, at least the hats should have been interchangeable, right?
@lego3x11l3 күн бұрын
Ahh yes, the 4+ Pirate sets, loved these as a child, even though I might have been a bit too old for them in 2004 (only missed the big ship, and the polybag) 😅 Very happy to own all those rare pieces today 😁 And in LEGOLAND Billund they still, to this day, have Redbeard's Ship in the window at one of the attractions, and I think I remember seeing a few more remnants last time I was there 😁

That's soooo crazy lol! I'm glad you got to experience this theme for yourself too. The parts are amazing!
@imahaloguy9 күн бұрын
Fascinating. You say these Jack Stone figures cannot be customized... but they had to be assembled at least once. Is there no way to take them apart? Not with a screwdriver or pliers, etc?

Hey, I'm from the UK and I have 2 of the Kragg in a barrel poly bags from when I went to Legoland Windsor back in the day. Didn't realise they were rare tbh.

Oh, nice! Yeah, hang on to those - I doubt they'll ever make that barrel in black again!

No one talks about it, but some of us remember it fondly. I had some of these growing up 😍

I've honestly been quite surprised by how many people actually had these! For the target demographic, these were probably a ton of fun.

Watching this video made me realize something, my little brother had literally all of these, and I remember the paper thing, never realized you could put that under the set though
@CheeseyStudiosКүн бұрын
That's too funny lol! Did you use the paper mat as like a treasure map or something instead?

These sets were my childhood! I would love to own all of these sets once again. If you're still looking to sell them I would for sure be interested. But shipping from the US to The Netherlands isn't going to be cheap I fear.
@CheeseyStudios9 күн бұрын
Ah, yeah, especially with the size of some of these parts D,: We'll see what happens - I'm sending them over to my mom this weekend for her to sell on her store (US shipping only :c). If there's no luck there, perhaps we can work something out!

Ah Pirates for Jr's, I only discovered this thing existed after I got some for myself, I'll be it mostly spare parts. And yet somehow I was able to build a half decent ship out of the obscure parts that came and went with this line

That's the beauty of the parts being so massive I suppose 😂

18:33 this skull piece means a lot to me, because you can wear it as a mask in LEGO POTC the videogame! Would you please check if there's a possibility to fit it on a normal minifigure like a mask? Would aprreciate that a lot, because I am sooo curious is this possible in a real life 😊 I love this Pirate subtheme, all these big elements and crazy names - especially Scurvy Dog;) Lego was really not afraid to do crazy things back then, wish LEGO would still do so
@CheeseyStudios9 күн бұрын
It would be pretty tricky to use as a mask - you'd probably have to take the minifigure's head off. Unfortunately, it's got to built-in Technic pins around the bottom back.
@mike.949 күн бұрын
@CheeseyStudios I know, in the game player's character was taking off headgear and puting his head between the pins. I was wondering is this possible to do?

I had just two of these sets, gifted to me during Christmas 2004 or 2005. Weren't the actual sets, just little polybags (maybe they came in tiny boxes, don't recall): #7080-1 and #7081-1. Tossed the pirates aside, but got great use out of the swords and the animals! Still use the rare trans-red Fabuland pitcher in mocs.

Wait. I had that motor. I never had any of this theme, it was before my time and I'd definitely remember those massive specialised parts, but I DEFINITELY remember that motor. I need to go consult with Bricklink. EDIT: I think it was 4669 Turbo-charged Police Boat that I had, I recognise a lot of the parts in it. I'm surprised I had a 2004 set to be honest, it must've been an early entry to LEGO that I'd completely forgotten about.

Oh nice! So you have the actual yellow motor then :o

I believe some of these sets were my first non duplo lego that I had as a kid. Although I do remember my mom took all the guns out of the set, never to be seen again. Weirdly until now I always remembered the figures as minifigures, not anything different.

That is some classic mom behavior lol - I love it

love Lego Pirates, especially the later sets with the Islanders and the shipwreck islands. so... when are you going to review Knights' Kingdom's 2006 constraction figures and sets? i always loved Vladek's 2nd design and his 3rd design made me dream of going back to the 2nd one to give him a gnarly tattered cape and spiky armor parts!

It’s really too bad that Lego is not making sets from their older original themes anymore 😞. They had so much creativity in them, and it’s too bad to see them reduced to a classic or city set every once in a while. It sucks especially because city sets are almost always overpriced because they can get away with it. Anyways, great video that recaps an obscure piece of Lego history from the 2000s. (I didn’t even know this existed until the little snippets of things about this theme in your bricklink videos lol😂)
@CheeseyStudios6 күн бұрын
It's been so fun to bring this theme into the spotlight for a bit 😂 It's so unique, and like you said, at the very least you just have to admire the creativity on display here! It's wacky and whimsical and filled with fun.
