In this VLOG I head to the LEGO Store to get some supplies for the city. After that I head to the studio and continue working on the zoo. After factoring in some feedback from the last video I decided to change up the design of the zoo to try and "break the rectangle". I also placed the zoo and a bunch of baseplates in the city. Now I plan to work on each section individually until it is complete.

I’ve seen many people say it like that and it’s not their city so those comments are unwarranted, if they’re giving feedback or “suggestions” the suggestions should stay just that. Suggestions aren’t telling someone something is wrong and saying to do it some other way and stuff like that, that’s just telling them things and trying to coach them on how to do things, if they’re going to say something they should say it in a more positive and constructive way, not “This is wrong do it this way this is wrong do it this way” but idrk

Zoos often have mixed enclosures with animals that would be found together in natural habitats so flamingos & alligators is 100% ok together. Non-realistic environments would cause animal depression since they naturally expect certain interactions.

As a naturalist by profession, I prefer animals in the wild too; however, remember for some species, zoos are an important part of animal conservation as natural habitats are lost to human development, so don't feel bad that you have a zoo. Great idea putting the black bears in the wild though. Are there fox or deer Lego? I have seen squirrels and birds. Raccoons? Not sure what all animals they have that can go in the wild.

Industrial zoos are going away and being replaced by natural habitat and wide open zoos. Animals aren’t segregated if they don’t have to be. Elephants, giraffes, herd animals, non carnivores can share an open space. Looks better and better for animals and zoo visitors.

Since you mentioned you're against animal captivity; there are zoos out there that aim to be more ethical. Ideally, they try to be rescue sanctuaries that house animals that wouldn't survive in the wild. The one in my city (Winnipeg) has made some great strides. The polar bears were orphaned cubs from Churchill, the wolves were domesticated for use in movies (they starred in The Grey with Liam Neeson), and they even have a blind seal :) Maybe you could incorporate some scenes to make it an ethical zoo? You could build an infirmary and have a vet checking out an animal. Could also set up an educational tour or a researcher studying animal behaviour. Just some ideas!

Unfortunately Lego doesn't make too many animals, but I do like the idea. We were just at Greater Vancouver Zoo that had three Grizzly Cubs that were rescued after their mother was shot and killed during a human encounter, they are raising them with the goal to release them back into the wild. Stories like that would fit well into a Lego theme

I've actually collected every single aquatic Lego animal for the ocean underneath the Ark. So I understand the zoo because you're right, Lego has really cool animals. I love your city layout........they sell those baseplates that have land and water designs so that might be a way to break up your grid, but honestly, you're doing an awesome job. I'm fine with rectangles, but maybe a way of introducing angles and reducing roads would be to have a pedestrianised area. I think it would work well near the skyscrapers to create a bit of space between them. A pedestrianised area would also be good for adding some elevation, greenery, markets stalls and street vendors.

But also people don't seem to be giving grace and patience you have so many cool cars to put on the roads and so many details and to add to your stories i can't wait to see what you do with what you have. And the math... there is alot of math involved in gridding these things out. What you do makes sense grid it out and then the details are making it pop and adding texture. I really enjoy the whole process. If you want more animals you could do a wildlife safari moc off the actual city like the midevil scene

The zoo walkway dog looks more like an AT-AT. Maybe it's back leg is sticking out behind it. Ha, part of Star Wars on Ice! Two ideas (take or leave) for rectangular breakup. 1) Take the second block and shift it over towards the railroad and have the road go around on the canal side. Maybe make a cul-de-sac at the railroad of the end block or even have the road cross the tracks and go off the end. I have always just used my imagination of where else it would take me, which makes your city even more interesting. 2) Have some kind of larger rock feature or something closer to the road/railroad between the boardwalk and the railroad that the boardwalk was forced to build around and breakup the straightness of it. Or have a path go down towards the canal for people to go down and fish. As always, you do you and keep up the great work! We watch everyday to see where you go next. Thanks so much!

Cities fall into a grid pattern because of practicality. Your countryside section should be more ‘curvy’ and open. Maybe put the aquarium in that spot where you have that helicopter now. Then the zoo isn’t quite a perfect rectangle but still square edges.

Why not go for a safari like experience? The animals are out in the open, the table gets covered more and can be connected either to the part of the amusement park. It enables a very organic layout and It would probably save some money too. Elevation can be done by rocks and and plates in an undefined manner. Heck you can either let a train go by or cars/minibuses.. The color palette will be refreshing. And it allows for content we haven't really seen yet.

Perhaps you might consider a more Animal Kingdom approach to the zoo. Open areas where animals can roam with natural dividers instead of smaller walled areas. It’s LEGO, so you can don’t have to have all the animals totally separate. Look at the Kilimanjaro Safari attraction at Animal Kingdom for reference. Wide open spaces with hidden or natural barriers (hedges, rock formations)

If you’re looking for a way to decrease the square footage that the roads take up, perhaps look at not using road plates so much, especially in the residential area and country areas. Maybe the polar bears could also be moved to the snowy part of the mountains?! 3. With the aquarium gone you coukd make two sides, and african animal side and an asian animal side seperated by the bird enclosure. This will allow you to get the new tigers and red pandas. 4. The current panda exhibit could have no exterior glass by the bird enclosure just a shorter fence. And then put yhe flamigos and alligators there. The birds will be by each other, a fence would keep aligtors in and it will break up the grid and feel less rectangular. Just some food for thought. I can't wait to see what you fo next!

Maybe a good idea for say each section (more specifically the city, zoo, and harbor since you started those) is to make an under construction base plate. This way you know you have room without a whole lot of rebuilding for future LEGO releases of city buildings or other moc ideas (Bicycle store, etc ...). Just for areas you're working on, and to leave extra room for growth without redesigning everything around.

Loving the new zoo. Definitely the angle tunnels helps to brake the square view. But if can bring a comment, you can also reduce the amount of tunnels. You are using tunnels to separate the habitats. But is not necessary to have more than 1 view point for each habitat. For example you can eliminate the tunnel between what is now the giraff and elephants. Using something different elements like rocks, fences or vegetation to separate the habitats . This will give more space for the habitat and also will help to break even more the square view!

Would be neat to have like some towns/cities have where you have an "old downtown" that's more 2 story stores on a main street with a city square. Then a "new downtown" that has updated skyscrapers and stores. So if space becomes an issue if the current downtown is landlocked split it off and do a secondary city center on the other side of the mountain with residential near it.

Love the walkways & the giraffe enclosure. It got me to look up the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak Michigan. At pedestrian level on Google Maps you can actually see animals in their enclosures. It's like a day at the zoo! There's a fountain, lots of trees, animal enclosures are off to the sides of the main double concourse, which has buildings like reptile & penguin houses. To make it in Lego would be possibly your whole table. I don't think you'll regret bumping back the zoo fences a bit, and perhaps building some of the behind-the-scenes maintenance sheds and so on. You have the space now to make it epic. Cheers!

When it comes to the aquarium, if you do move it, you can just say, most of it is under ground, that's what my local one has, just an idea 😊

I suggest have a much larger space for the elephant because as a big animal they need more room to move around.

Curves and angle are great but then you lose the flexibility/modular options that MILs plates provides or end up wasting space. As for the aquarium, what about some space near an edge of the city that you could carve in more ocean/water?

In Santa Barbara, California, there is a small aquarium/sea center at one of the piers on the beach. You can take inspiration from that, if you want. 😊

Flamingos don't need a tall fence around them. You can put them wherever you WANT and it would be true 👍 😏

Regarding the Zoo, this may be so parts intensive and would consume a lot, however, if you would like to keep all the animals and add more there is a way to do it. Where I used to live there was a Zoo with multileveled areas. So for example the polar bears, seals and monkeies had a Mercedes logo space separated in 3 different areas. All these were also made like an artificial hill underneath the aquarium with some water animals and on the top there was a hill with the monekies. So the space rather than going horizontally was expanding vertically. Just an idea, maybe for the future...

that structure for the zoo at 19:00 you could raise and copy it if you would like to go for a terminal station on an aiport, I think if you swap some colours it actaully looks really decent!

When you build the mountain remember you need to go for triangle shape and not some massive cliff edge in the middle of the city.

Dude I think your city is amazing! Keep doing what you do! I love the zoo, it's probably my favorite thing about the city. What you could do is put the aquarium on the ocean front somewhere? Or somewhere along the river or creek. I know most aquariums are near lakes, oceans, or some form of water and they integrate it into the aquarium. Could be a cool thing.

My only thought on the zoo is to take inspiration from Animal Kingdom in Disney world and make the environment more natural instead of Jail cells. Love the progress on the city though. That water is AMAZING

The raised walkway would look great as a "tree top walk" but i think for the Zoo the pathways should be more organic and low (not angled or straight) it will help with the feeling that these are captive animals, you dont want them too look like they are in an animal prison. I love that you are taking people's opinions into consideration but do what makes you happy.

If you samt some more room in the enclosures, you could turn some of the walkways in to walls, people don’t really need to see everything from both sides. Those walls could also be used to give the enclosures some thematic backdrops and places for the animals to retreat from guests. But whatever you do it looks great already :o)

Move the aquarium to its own place in the city like usually aquariums and sea life centres have their own place and that opens up plot for the zoo.

Also can you build a little elevator box for the raised walk way, it seems way too steep for a wheel chair and we wanna make sure everyone gets a chance to visit the zoo

Nah - go big on that standalone aquarium! A Shamu-style orca tank would be epic! My thoughts (and yours) on the ethics of SeaWorld aside…it’d be cool in Lego.

I don’t know if it is mentioned already. But if you really want more space in the zoo, what about putting the polar bears in the winter area and the seals at the cove/beach? It will make some stories in those areas and you will have space in the zoo for other animals or vendors. Or even more space for your aquarium. But definitely looking great with those angles in the zoo.

If you're not a fan of animals in captivity maybe you could add some wandering around the city, almost like the minifigures and animals treat the zoo as more of their home rather than just the citizens of the city watching them while they're trapped. There's possibility for set up of some cool scenes like a family of gorillas going for a day out in the city passing by a family going for a day out at the zoo at the entrance!!

Boston has an aquarium that is all inside one building without tanks for whales. Which sits right next to boats that go out into the ocean to see the whales.

Try make the aquarium else where in the city instead of the zoo. You could use it with the beach to use some of the empty space in the beach/dock area or near the Flower garden and tie with the city River. Also consider making the zoo border not symmetrical.

I've been to many zoos where the animals are mixed. You could have all the herbivores together and just separate the carnivores.
