The LEGO Technic 42176 Porsche GT4 e-Performance Race Car set is probably the most anticipated release from the August 2024 wave, thanks to its brand new hub with 3 integrated motors, 6 lights and a rechargeable battery, and also due to the fact that LEGO claims this to be the fastest Control+ set today. But is it really, and is it a good build?

Although I’ve never been a fan of sets in this scale I absolutely love the shapes of this one. All the wheel arches and the rear is really nice and I’m positively surprised how good it looks in a home setting. The optic cables are a big plus for me as there could be a potential to make some pretty cool light arrangements with those.

Thank you for the detailed review. If you don't mind, I have a few two questions: 1. How well do the fiber optics fit into the pins and cross axles? Is it a loose, or a tight fit - 3,0 standard diameter or a custom 3,2 LEGO version? 2. Does the new hub have enough torque to spin the wheels? 3. What's the gear ratio between the side and back outputs? Thank you and keep up the good work!

The fiber optics fit in the pin tight. Spinning the wheels always depends on the surface, it spins on a tile if you block the car, but not on the carpet :) I think the gear ratio is 1:1, but the hub is in the car so it's difficult to check at the moment.

Me too. I had those two models, and they are both fast. I think faster than the new ones. Also steering with physical pad was easier for me, than on the touch screen.

separate motors at the back looks like something that could be useful for a tracked vehicle or one motor for drive input and second one as gear selector - this could actually be a fastest set if they made the gearbox and an app that would automatically adjust the gears based on the load on the motor.

I think if they weren’t going to give it a suspension anyway they should have made it at a smaller scale, similar to the old TG Rally car. That way it would have been probably lighter too. Maybe the hub wouldn’t fit the shape of the Cayman at a smaller scale though.

It’s possible that they didn’t race the vehicles, but just claimed the new was faster based on the motor specs. You said you found the new motor was faster, so in theory given the same gearing and wheel size, the new _motor_ would make a faster vehicle, and I could see TLG thinking there’s no point trying to make comparisons of entire drivetrains because there’s so much variability. …and then somehow that clear, unambiguous comparison got lost on the way to the final ad copy, and it became a claim about not just the entire drivetrain but the entire vehicle.

Alternate rear motor output is excellent for 4 wheel drive vehicles, such as the Audi e-tron set. Would be cool to mod the e-tron to integrate this new hub Also, a detachable battery suggests that we may see a high power hub with 2 battery inputs.

About gamepad control: I'm using ipega gamepad in special mode with an shootin plus app that can set-up virtual taps on screen to control games or cars that uses app to control and doesn't support gamepad... It might also work with this app. I'll try it myself if i buy it 😉

It would have been nice if a charging cable was supplied as we have to spend so much on the set as it is. I however will be getting this set as a technic builder. I guess we can use any USB-C cable. The high speed claim is just as in real life cars pure marketing. It was probably done under laboratory conditions on a special test track and has nothing to do with actual play testing. The Audi still remains a better deal imo. Happy about the comeback of fibre optics though. Makes me hope for a large 8480 comeback.

To start with a positive! I do like the lights! Other than that....very much feels like a missed opportunity. Still slow, lacks any kind of flexibilty, still extremely overpriced, and still no physical controller. I mean, I could totally see this work as a kind of entry system into remote controlled Technic sets. And I think this is about the same size as the sports cars like the Huracan, Bolide and Senna? How cool would it be if the next models in that line were designed to be converted into an RC car with the use of a seperately available and somewhat reasonably priced RC kit? But this being the same price as that Audi feels just bizarre to me.

I have the Audi set, and I'm a little bit disappointed in the smallness of this Porsche set. I want it because of the new integrated hub (which I'm planning to put into an other car MOC) but it's a bit overpriced for what to me feels like a much smaller, more limited set. Around 120 euros MSRP would have been much better.

For far less than 170€ I'll get a "real" RC car, which is far more fun, much faster and more durable, and has a REAL REMOTE, and looks far better. e.g. the MJX HyperGo. LEGO really has lost all touch with reality.

And can you rebuild that RC car into something else using only the parts from the box? LEGO is not the same as an RC car, they have a completely different purpose and play experience. A reality check in this area can definitely be useful :)

@@RacingBrick I didn't want to compare the technology, just point out the insane pricing of LEGO. Essentially you pay ~120€ extra just for a bluetooth connected battery/motor/servo/lights box - given that the 800 parts Jesko set will cost is 52€, and the GT4 has ~850 parts. So for 170€ I can get the Jesko Technic set AND a full blown high quality RC car like the MJX that doesn't drive at speeds where a snail would overtake you... The small tracked RCs from LEGO from a few years ago where at least fun to drive and also much cheaper. The GT4 is just a shameless, ugly money grab from LEGO. You can get 4 (!) CaDa Z-Wind RC for the money, which even include a remote and also looks better imho.

Hello, actually the fastest set is 42176 Porsche GT4. The most important factors here are weight, rpm and wheel radius. When we compare it with Buggy; The wheel radius is larger in 42124 but smaller in 42176 so this makes the Buggy faster. Of course, since Buggy is lighter in weight, it is faster. However, technically 42176 Porsche GT4 is the fastest Lego Technic set. (Sorry my English is a little bad😂)

I guess from their point of view, the claim is pretty clear, it is supposed to be the fastest car "in the current" LEGO Technic CONTROL+ range (as of August 2024). The buggy is no more available in the range, so the fastest car become 42176... According to TLG... (?)

But that's the point: it is way simpler (for them) to prove a race car is faster than an off-road car, instead of a "really special conditions lab/battery/floor/weather/pilot/whatever test" (^^) in wich you showed us that the truth is pretty much the other way around... (I mean, you obviously showed us that the buggy is a bit faster than the porsche). I'm currious to see how they could prove the contrary... Will they prove it to be faster by 0.0001km/h in certain special conditions that a standard customer can't reach?... Not very glorious to my eyes... The only possibility I could imagine is that the software version you used don't push motors at 100% power (why?), not a clever move from TLG knowing that everyone will want to check the claim on the box... I am pretty sure the claim stands for main/standard consumers: a granny (knowing nothing about LEGO) looking for a toy for her grand-child (himself knowing nothing about previous sets in the line). The claim don't stands for AFOL/LEGO-specialists like us... I am sure you will provide us updates. Can't wait to see ^^

I have one word for describe this set - disappointed. 1. I love Porsche cars but this one doesn't look like Porsche. 2. The fastest set turned out to be not the fastest. 3. It has fewer parts, including electric part, than Audi RS Q E-tron, but the price is the same... Insane! It should cost less. The new motor-hub looks interesting to try, but I sure it can only be used for certain type of vehicle, so AFOL will continue to use separate motors.

What is the size/scale of this set, would be cool if you could do a size comparison to a fixed standard model like you used to do by seeing if it fits on the technic car transporter, maybe at the end of each review or as a stand alone future video or even as a series by year or something....

You could see it next to the buggy and the Audi, that should help defining the scale. A lot of LEGO cars have a unique scale, not everything fits on the car transporter... It might be a funny thing at the end of the year but I'm not sure it is that useful in every video.
