As a piece of trivia, although the tyres on the set are rubber, on the real vehicle they were made of titanium mesh. Rubber would not be able to withstand the Moon conditions.

@@michaelp9061 The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) is a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the American Apollo program (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972. It is popularly called the Moon buggy, a play on the term "dune buggy". Built by Boeing, each LRV has a mass of 462 pounds (210 kg) without payload. It could carry a maximum payload of 970 pounds (440 kg), including two astronauts, equipment, and cargo such as lunar samples, and was designed for a top speed of 6 miles per hour (9.7 km/h), although it achieved a top speed of 11.2 miles per hour (18.0 km/h) on its last mission, Apollo 17. Each LRV was carried to the Moon folded up in the Lunar Module's Quadrant 1 Bay. After being unpacked, each was driven an average of 30 km, without major incident. These three LRVs remain on the Moon. History The concept of a lunar rover predated Apollo, with a 1952-1954 series in Collier's Weekly magazine by Wernher von Braun and others, "Man Will Conquer Space Soon!" In this, von Braun described a six-week stay on the Moon, featuring 10-ton tractor-trailers for moving supplies. In 1956, Mieczysław G. Bekker published two books on land locomotion while he was a University of Michigan professor and a consultant to the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command's Land Locomotion Laboratory. The books provided much of the theoretical basis for future lunar vehicle development. In 1959, Georg von Tiesenhausen conceived the lunar rover as a four-wheel-drive vehicle with noninflated, flexible wheels..

The steering and folding mechanisms are genius. I'm glad this set exists. I was really keen to get this set because I love space and cars. But after thinking about it, I really don't like all the stickers and doodads. I wish it was just the unloaded car for 2/3 of the price so I will wait for a deep sale or get the G Wagon since it's about the same price.

Thanks for the wonderful review! This set is my personal highlight from this years Technic wave. Unlike most sets it stays true to the slogan "Built for real" because it depicts the functions of the real LRV in great detail. Without the specialized parts it wouldn't have looked as good so I'm glad LEGO did not simply use motorcycle rims and tires.

The set has 12 numbered bags and by bag 6, the rover is built. The last 6 bags are just accessories and display stands. I think the second half of the build just increases the piece count and not the value to justify a $220 price.

I get that the lunar rover is historically significant no doubt. But this release, along with releasing a set like the new Icons Sixties Batmobile seems quite odd for Lego. I get that it’s aimed at the kind of one off adult purchaser and the AFOL market but to me these ideas are gonna most appeal to those over the age of 65. 🤔🤷 And TBH when it comes to moon landing themed sets, I would rather have seen an Apollo service and command module set, maybe even with the lunar lander (even though they’ve technically done that already) than the lunar rover. But I guess the rover makes most sense for a technic set. And I agree, the lack of information on the river in the manual is odd. Even those around at the time of the landing didn’t know much in terms of detail of the rover and the lander, so more information would’ve been nice!

This is the only nasa set I won’t buy, for a variety of reason including space, but also it’s simply not that good of a set compared to the others excluding the lander of course, which I plan to sell soon for a similar reason. They used to be the main sets I collected but after spending $350 on the other two this year among other things I can’t justify it at all. Perhaps if it goes down to a reasonable price in a year and a half or so.
