Happy Throwback Thursday! I review the LEGO Paradisa 1992 set, the Sand Dollar Cafe! This is too chill like the Paradisa line tbh. There's even a cute lil' ice cream seller!

I found the baseplate on eBay earlier this year for about 5 bucks, it was well worth the price because I've never seen anything like it - it's really beautiful and pastel sort of 1980s, Miami/ Vice City colours

I always forget you do these, and am always presently surprised when these come out. Anyway, as for the set, the both is really cool. The baseplate is pretty nice, and while I'd prefer some builds for the beach part, it is still cool what they were able to do with just a baseplate. This is the kind of lego set I really enjoy. Vehicles are nice, and so are the sets with multiple separate components, but the sets I like most have one solid build that gives a nice environment. And this set does it wonderfully. All the little builds throughout the baseplate just give it such a lively feel. It's really nice.

I think I have this set, or at least part of it. I once got a large bin of legos from this era, and I have the baseplate, most of the minifig parts,and i remember seeing lots of the parts around. Im going to try to build it soon.

Some thoughts on this line: 1. The first sets (1992-1994 aprox) do not seem girly at all to me except for the boxes. A few pink pastel pieces here and there give it a nice touch to the whole aesthetic. Let’s not forget light pink polos and shirts are a norm in the male wardrobe. 2. The color palette from the later sets which seem to introduce copious amounts of magenta colors do seem girlier, but the whole aesthetic looks different overall. Not the same feeling it used to have (I specially hate the fun fair set which is very close to the friends color palette, and the theme of the set seems to stray away from the original paradisa) 3. Activities that this theme focuses upon are horse riding, windsurfing, leisure and drink tasting. No wonder this theme didn’t do as lego expected since it does not include the activities the friends set have: make up and hair salons, dollhouses, and beauty/glamour sets overall. 4. The gender balance in this line seems excellent to me. This adds to the previous point as to why it may haven’t done that well for girls. Friends sets seem to have one male character at most in is sets. 5. I’m thinking LEGO did not dive in to a girly approach like friends back in 1992 because they thought it would be extremely risky, not to mention this was their very first attempt. Then Belville happened but I think it sucked due to the whole little girl in a fairytale theme, which was very specific IMO (Girls evidently prefer more glamorous stuff overall, not trying to generalize here) 6. The face print variety was very narrowed down in its last years, resorting only to the small eyes/mouth female face and the man with the stache, whereas the first figures included the stud, the kid with and without freckles, the chick, and the man with the stache. Evidently, the line also went from having people of different ages to adults only, unless little girls used make up and boys had somehow grown a mustache. 7. Adding to point 6, the later torsos designed for female figures seemed very childlike, whereas the first ones included more mature designs. Also, no one has probably noticed this but for some reason the open mouth female face suddenly went out of production and got replaced by the smaller features face, and the box designs remained the same. I love this theme so much!

Hey J2G can you tell me if the smaller white bar on the windsurfer is made of a softer, bendable plastic? Compare it to the bar on the umbrella for the ice cream cart which should be a hard plastic. And maybe check other sets you have with windsurfers and let me know if the cross-bar is a soft plastic (like Cabana Beach). Thanks!
