Lego Transformers Armada Optimus Prime MOC (full showcase)

This is a derivative fanmade version of Transformers Armada Optimus Prime made out of Lego. I am not affiliated with either brand.

Transformers Armada Optimus Prime is something I've been wanting to try and build with Lego since late 2017/early 2018. Back then, the available parts at the time meant that building it up to my standards of articulation with reasonable stability would have been borderline impossible. So I ended up shelving the project for several years while I practiced building other things. This was BEFORE it was announced that a new Armada Prime Transformer toy was in the works.
Fast forward to last year, 2022. Lego started producing new ratchet joint parts that were more compact of multiple sizes. Combined with the re-emergence of Armada Transformer toys, I was re-inspired, and knew my time was now to get this project done. I'd had a lot of time to think about it, so I started tinkering with the build, this time fully intent on finishing the project.
I have a tendency to be a perfectionist, which causes me to over-stress over the details. I wanted it ALL out of this Lego MOC: A fully functional Armada Optimus Prime figure with truck cab and trailer, cab robot and and base mode, and most importantly the super mode combination. All with the most articulation I could manage, with all necessary features, accessories, and even both Minicons! The only thing I wasn't worried about was the motorized gimmicks lol, because as cool as the original leader class toy was, I still wished it had knees.
Thank the Lord Jesus, after a year of building, and the last month preparing a video to showcase it (a kind that I had never done before, plus I hate the sound of my own voice lol), it is FINALLY DONE. The project is now complete!
The Armada version of Optimus Prime is a bit obscure these days, but the original deluxe-class figure was my first ever Transformer, and I have fond memories of it, so I'll never forget it. I hope that those who recognize it will like this Lego version! I'm glad to have finally gotten it done.

This isn't a toy, it's a work of art! Whole-ass had me drooling like Augustus Gloop waiting to get into Willy Wonka's factory. This is a close second to the Legacy update, with the exception of the battle platform, which you actually did better than the official offering. I mean. . . . let's face it: the original had the best battle platform, and Naval Commander came close to it, but didn't really hit the mark. Yours feels like it's halfway between Armada's and the original Powermaster Optimus' and, in all honesty, while it's not "correct," it doesn't feel wrong, either. . . . and it's far better than whatever Legacy's is trying to do. You did the Big 'Bot justice. I would gladly pay for even just the instructions, but, damn, it'd be a literal crime to dismantle this masterpiece just to record it. I can't wait to see the (hopefully) inevitable Jetfire and Overload and their combinations, and whatever else you may have in store.

..... How... How in the world did you manage to make an even better trailer for Armada Optimus in all modes than Hasbro?? I just got done typing a whole comment on another video about how Hasbro couldn't have done better with the size class budget they had, and here you are completely proving me wrong with LEGO. I'm legitimately baffled. The crotch skirt is better, the waist swivel doesn't pull the skirt with it, the legs have functioning turrets, and the cape looks even more like a cape than the final version. If you were to take this, have the missile pods be a partsforming weapon instead, or nix them and keep the shifting calves from the LEGACY release so they don't bulk up the cape too much, and I genuinely think this would just be the perfect trailer in all three modes. This is awe-inspiring, dude, and actually makes me think Hasbro could have potentially done better with both the super mode and base mode. I have no clue if they'd need to increase the size class to do so, but I genuinely am confident they could have done better purely because of this video, now.

Thank you so much for this comment. It helps me know that the project was a success. As for 'how'... now that it has been finished I kinda keep asking myself the same thing. I guess as the saying goes, 'with God all things are possible' lol. But really, when I first started this, I went in with the idea that I wanted a 'Masterpiece' Armada Optimus Prime, back before the Legacy prototype was even revealed a few years back. Then as Fans Hobby made theirs and the official Legacy version was revealed while I was still building, I was able to take some inspiration from all versions to help refine and figure it out. Then did my best to 'fix' every problem that all preexisting versions had. As far as the missile pods go, if I were to do it again or redo it, I would keep them but have them fold into the leg calves instead for Super mode. It would definitely look way slimmer and make for a cleaner cape, as well as ease some of the back-heaviness. But, that said they were a last minute addition, and after a year straight of building, I just wanted to get this project finally done. Especially after it being put on the back burner for several years. But, being a perfectionist, I will likely eventually revisit it in the future. Though for now it certainly does the job. While the design here is really clever, for Hasbro to do a lot of the improvements this has over Legacy they would certainly need a bigger budget. Many of the designs here are more suited for a Masterpiece Armada Prime, especially all of the folding on the back panel. I would imagine that the designers tried a lot of things like a secondary higher up waist swivel, better separate hip skirts, or a covering for the hands on the legs- and got shot down by their superiors and told to dial back. Corporate budgets are pain. The design team on Legacy Armada Prime probably hit the limit of parts they were allowed to have. Transformers have huge molds compared to any other toy because of the number of parts they have, it's why they're so expensive to begin with- and unfortunately a lot of the design choices here wouldn't be viable on a real transformer. This build is genuinely amazing though, it definitely surpasses the Legacy one in quite a few places!

This thing was tedious in its own right for me to make, so I imagine a REAL Masterpiece Armada Optimus Prime from Hasbro would be much more expensive than Legacy.

It is actually pretty simple, a new big ratchet joint set of parts came out last year, I showed them in the beginning of the vid. Beyond that it is just a matter of making the blocky legs.

Thanks! Unfortunately I do not have such a file for any of this, not even the little stuff. At least, not yet. I will say though, that Sparkplug is a pretty simple build, and that if you are familiar enough with the various Lego parts, it should be fairly easy to recreate it from looking at what I've shown. Keep in mind I also have all the pictures posted on my Flickr page (linked in the video description) if you would prefer studying that over trying to pause the video. I apologize for the inconvenience. I haven't used Stud.io or any of that digital stuff much, so I don't know if or especially when I would be able to do anything like instructions yet. honestly, I think the the only things that need tuning are the head pieces. Moko bricks has made some really strong robot heads using very little pieces, worth checking out if you don't follow them!

Thanks for the feedback, and I appreciate the suggestion! Moko Bricks does have some great head designs for how small they are. I do wish I could have had better heads for my MOC here, but unfortunately, I had to make some sacrifices in order to let it both still transform AND still somewhat resemble Armada Optimus Prime. So I figured that this was close enough as the best of both worlds. Nice thing about Lego is it could always be improved in the future!
