Here's my review of the LEGO 43230 Walt Disney Tribute Camera set, something I wasn't that excited due to price, and after building it, still not excited due to price. Such a cool looking LEGO set though...

This is not actually the first set to use Lego bricks to generate specific sounds! I know you’re not big on Technic, but the Technic core of the Ideas Typewriter has some incredible sound based functionality.

@@siIver10 To be precise, it's a gear grinding against a soft green rod (part 6308241). I think what Tiago is trying to say is that this is the first time plastic Lego (not Technic) elements are ground against a gear. I imagine that would normally be an illegal move, as it would wear away at the piece used.

The price is absolutely spot on, definitley for big disney fans, the audience that this set is clearly aimed at. Having that in mind, the 2 thing you said don't "add a a lot" being Walt Disney and the multiplane (in, you know, a walt disney tribute set..) become the absolute most important parts. This is the grand finale to the disney 100 sets and it really pays off. I'm glad they put that much effort into it.

I disagree with eliminating the multi-plane camera and the Walt Disney minifig. I feel like for $100 I cannot complain at all with the camera and additional build. To me this is a darn near perfect set to celebrate Disney100

I don’t know, as an animation student and enthusiast myself, it’s super cool to see the multi-plane camera represented in LEGO and I can’t think of a better set to include it in, so I’m very glad they did it here, and getting a Walt with it only makes sense. Hoping to get this set soon!

The price is not THAT bad, especially when there's far far smaller sets that retail for the same amount as this does and has less figures (since people have such a massive turn on for such things these days). I think the volume of stuff here is just about right and the amount of unique figs and printed pieces, especially that film element cannot be argued. Price per part doesn't look good, but that metric isn't that useful anymore with how many small pieces are in sets now which make the sets' final result be very small. Otherwise, more people would be all over the Star Wars dioramas last year. My only gripe is how wobbly it is when winding the handle. It seems pretty top heavy too (then again that's normal for any camera tripods).

I think you waay underestimate the value the Walt Disney minifig and multiplane camera bring to this set. Especially to long-time fans of Disney history. This is my favorite of the Disney 100 offerings so far.

The NES set used a similar gear mechanism to make sound in one of the TV’s control knobs.

The Nintendo (nes) set also has an extremely accurate brick-real sound when turning the channel in the TV. And the typewriter also make some realistic sounds.

In the Lego NES Set there was also a knob on the TV that made an intentional sound 😊

5:06 if I remember correctly, there was a ratchet system in the lego nintendo entertainment system that made a fun sound, although it did serve an actual purpose in not letting the crank spin backwards

The channel knob on the front of the screen could turn both ways, although there was an upper and lower limit. The crank on the side rotated the screen, but it could only go forward and didn't have an added sound effect. Using the Super Mario figure would produce sounds though.

That build related to the multiplane camera is actually amazing. I just learned about that technology a couple months ago, and when I saw the moon and field on the box, I was thinking, "Oh... that's the picture they used in the video talking about the multiplane camera." But I brushed it off thinking maybe it was also a still from a Disney movie. But knowing there is actually a build showing this technology, even as small as it ended up being, that might be worth the purchase for me right there. That's amazing and far from expendable for me!

The Nintendo Entertainment System also had bricks in it only intended to make sound. The little knob on the TV makes a sound when turned, much like this one does :)

I'm not a Disney fan, but I actually quite like this set! And might even buy one. Though I do have one major issue with it: For a set that seems all about animated movies, why is the main item a film camera on a tripod? It would have been so much cooler if they had made a much bigger, somewhat functional model of that multiplane camera...

actually that sound trick has been used in a slightly different way before! The lego NES had a small soft plastic technic bar that would rub against a gear piece inside of the Knob on the TV model to make that old fashioned "changing the channel" clicking when you rotate the knob

I was sure I wasn't going to get this set but the more I see it, the more it appeals to me. The camera itself, the figures, the film, the clapper display, the mini camera build with the actual scene from the video Disney did it. I find it odd how they skipped over Aladdin in the list of movies. Tarzan makes sense to skip because it was later and the rights situation is a mess.

@@TiagoCatarino I know but it has most of the ones people would call classics so it's odd that Aladdin was skipped especially when they've made Aladdin sets but they haven't made Lion King or Rescuers sets. I feel like Frozen and Encanto could've been swapped for some older hand drawn films

@@TiagoCatarino My only problem with the film strip is that the "sprocket holes" don't line up properly. There should be four holes per frame. In real life, this would ensure a stable image during projection.

I got the set for my birthday, a few weeks ago. Compared to the high price, do I still think it’s worth it. Though it hasn’t that much pieces, it’s more like a “monument” for me. And at the same time it combines my interests of video production and Disney. The fact that it also has a few Lego-play features is just a plus for me. But great review, I think you covered the set really well!

The multiplane camera is a must as the very nice looking main model is not an animation camera! It is just a symbol for a film company while the work has been done on the desk and the multiplane. Icould do without all of the minifigs but Walt.

Gotta disagree with the reviewers “expendable” parts of this set. The set itself represents Walt Disney and the innovations his studios were known for, so why would you not include Walt and the multi plane camera piece? Seems to make perfect sense. The integrated directors clapper is a nice touch and using it as a display base is really creative. This review only tells me the reviewer does not understand the significance of Disney studios and Disney fans. Price is spot on for this set.

Triggered that the slots in the grey round element (Lego element 4185) in both zero's of the 100 sign aren't in the same direction. The left 4185 has horizontal slots, the one on the right vertical.

Honestly seeing as its a disney licensed set the price isnt that bad esp when you consider the overall scale and quality of the set. They easily could have charged a disney premium but $20 above the part-price ratio isnt the worst thing. Also the minifig and extra elements makes perfect sense for a tribute set and adding that extra bit of value.

The multi-plane camera was one of the reasons I wanted this set. Thought that was such a cool little add-on. And While I paid the full $99USD for this, I bought it when the Disney 100 GWP with the lightbrick and exclusive Mickey figure returned, which more than makes up for the MAYBE too-high of a price. I look at it as total value for my $99, and I gotta say it's outstanding. Plus just the whole build is one of the best things LEGO has put out in a long time, regardless of theme.

You can talk about and compare the disney 100 gift with purchase as a more practical tribute, but that was $100 threshold to get that so that doesn’t really help your argument. For the same $100 id rather have the camera. Plus you’d get both if you bought it in the gwp window.

What I’m saying with the GWP example is that there’s no need for the minifigure to make any set a tribute. This set is slightly overpriced and I went over some of the things that could have been cut out of the product entirely to try and bring the retail price down to more reasonable levels. Maybe I wasn’t clear in my explanation!
