It depends on the timing. If Legolas was born after the war where Thranduil lost his father, she didn't die there. Thranduil mentioned facing the great serpents of the north and showed the scars of the dragon fire on his face, so it's likely if she didn't die in that war, she died protecting both Legolas and her husband from the dragon, which would mean she loved them both more than life. I find that possibility more poetic, personally.

coming in late, but I like this, as it is something that Peter Jackson cooked up to make Thraduil a more complete, and sympathetic charactor, that Moonlight has dramatized quite well. While there is no mention of Thranduil's wife in Tolkiens work, there is a lot of his backstory in "The Silmarllion", which tells us that Oropher, Thranduil's father, and Thranduil did indeed participate in the take down of Morgoth (Sauron's doppleganger) in the first age, and Oropher was killed in that battle, along with 2/3rds of his army. Just before that battle, there was war north of the elven kingdoms in Angmar, and it's entirely possible that these same elves were some that fought with the men of Dunadain to defeat the Witch King and some dragons. Yeah, same guy that Eowyn and Merry took out in LOTR. So, anyway, the scenario that Jackson cooked up could have actually happened. Keeping in mind that Legolas would have been forward of 1,000 years old. Thranduil himself was likely nearly as old as Elrond.
