Lehi Sees an Iron Rod and Those Who Fall Away | 1 Nephi

In his vision, Lehi notices a rod of iron leading to the tree of life by which he stands. Next to the rod of iron is a strait and narrow path. Concourses of people are pressing forward along the path when a mist of darkness arises, and many lose their way. Those who had taken hold of the rod of iron survive the mist of darkness, arrive at the tree, and partake of the fruit. Lehi notices a great and spacious building filled with rich-looking men and women. They scoff at and mock those who have partaken of the fruit. Many are ashamed and fall away into forbidden paths and are lost.
Based on 1 Nephi 8:19-28:
19 And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood.
20 And I also beheld a strait and narrow path, which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world.
21 And I saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward, that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which I stood.
22 And it came to pass that they did come forth, and commence in the path which led to the tree.
23 And it came to pass that there arose a mist of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost.
24 And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.
25 And after they had partaken of the fruit of the tree they did cast their eyes about as if they were ashamed.
26 And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth.
27 And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit.
28 And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.

I have many family members who act like the people in the large building who mock the ones who hold fast to the iron rod. I ignore them, pray for them and keep on hanging onto that rod (for many decades now.)

A beautiful portrayal of this profound parable that is so apt to our day. It isn’t easy holding to the road of iron, walking the strait and narrow path, having faith in this faithless world of the latter days, but worth the effort and self discipline required to avoid the mists of worldly darkness.

I’ll be honest. The feeling I get is the word of god in the fullness of the gospel. The Bible, the BOM, D&C, Pearl of great price, ect. I feel that is the iron rod. And for us Latter Day Saint trying time live in this world today is really hard. ESP where I’m from. People of all faiths laugh at us saints here. I see all these churches that are large and spacious buildings with their expensive dress and cars. Church I came from was this way. Pastor had two homes, 7 cars, and made tons of money from the church. I became a Saint two years ago and my family disowned me, friends as well. They still sit around and mock my faith and beliefs. This is what I feel like this vision was in a way. I know God knew this was gonna be hard for us saints in the latter days. God bless all of you brothers and sisters.

How lucky are we to have this beautiful imagery of the rod of iron and tree of life! If we grasp unto the rod of iron and press forward we can each partake of the fruit from the tree of life which will bring ultimate joy and happiness. We must steer clear of the mists of darkness and the great and spacious building so we don't get lost. Let us move forward in faith and cling to the rod of iron! #FaithToAct
