Volume 1 of Lehigh Valley's Buffalo Division by Bill McLane covers the operations of the branch lines in the Finger Lakes Region in the 1960's.
We'll begin at Sayre by boarding the train with Bill and the crew to head up the Auburn Branch to Auburn. From Auburn, we'll backtrack a bit and head down the Auburn branch on the last plow in 1966. From Freeville, we'll look at the Cortland branch including the last trip to Canastota. Then, we'll travel the Auburn & Ithaca Branch. To conclude Volume 1, we'll make a run on the Seneca Falls Branch to Geneva.

The Lehigh Valley once roared past my childhood backyard in Clark, NJ. I witnessed the final days of the ALCO Cab diesels [PA+FA] on fast freights and doing local factory switching off the mainline. The Oak Island to South Plainfield weekday Locals were handled by EMD or Baldwin switchers. However the weekend freight locals sometimes had ALCO RS-3, FA-1s, or PA-2 doing the honors. The switch overs on the West/East mainline in Clark are now long removed. The Hyatt Roller Bearing and National Gypsum Paper Companies have become a golf course & a shopping strip mall. Thank you to all those who recorded videos of the Valley in action!

My grandfather worked in the roundhouse in Sayre for the Buffalo division until his death around 59. This is cool.

The full crew laws were a joke, railroad welfare! I went to work for the PC NJ Div. Nov '74 as a student engineer, the company, and I, didn't like the term fireman. I earned and learned, I didn't just sit there and go for a train ride. One trainman with a radio was all that was needed for switching. A lot of this should have been done away with back in the 50's with CTC and dynamic brakes in use. Safety had nothing to do with as you can see today. In order for the UTU to survive, they have to scab on us engineers, ride our productivity coattails so they go along for the ride. I retired Jan 2011 after 36 years of engine service, and don't miss it one little bit.

Kinda a tall order only even for the best switchmen / hogger with just two men on board with 13k on your back. I think remote controlled packs and the like came from this thinking straight away - what you said about extra crew not needed. Selling your own brothers down the sloshing toilets
