The lens is amazing. The f1.7 I am in love. but....I notice a flaw but it may not be that big of a deal if you wouldn't use this to film. I bought 2 follow focus units and I put one on the focus ring, and one on the zoom and what I find is that you can't change focal points and zoom at the same time. For example, if you are zooming in and turning the focus ring to a closer focal point, it sticks at whatever focus point you start at and then snaps to the closer focal point once you stop zooming in. If that makes sense. I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but changing focus while either zooming in or out should be something that I would think the lens should be able to do especially for the price. Has anyone experienced this or know why this is? Hello.....? Panasonic?

@@youknowwho9247 a full frame 24-105 f4 is in no way equivalent to this lens. Another great video Gordon! Just let me get one thing straight... If you compare it to the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 you said the sigma lacks in the wide angle area, but (and maybe I got the all thing wrong) on a M43 camera if you take that 10-25 f1.7 you need to multiply it by 2, bringing you to FF equivalent of 20-50 f3.4, but if you take the sigma 18-35 on an APS-C, you need to multiply it by, Lets say... 1.6 on a canon and you get 28.8-56 f2.88 so you lose around 9mm on the sigma but you get a much faster aperture plus you put it on a larger sensor and the sigma cost $1000 less so... Sounds better to me :)

Gordon, I really enjoy your reviews. Regarding the corner sharpness discussed at about 14 minutes into the review, do you think the corner softness of the 10-25 vs the 8-18 could be due to the fact that the subject is at a significant angle to the image plane of the lens, and the 8-18 appears sharper due to increased DOF from the smaller aperture?

The zoom range is great and makes me a bit envious. But certainly not £1800 worth! And I wouldn’t trade it for my Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art anyway (even imagining I owned a M4/3 camera). The F1.8 on an APS-C body is equivalent to roughly F2.9 on a full frame, whereas the F1.7 of the Leica on a M4/3 is equivalent to only F3.4. And I think my Sigma has a flatter field as well. And one thing you didn’t talk much about is the colour rendition, and that's where my Sigma nearly makes me cry for utter joy and amazement. My Canon body might help there as well, of course. I’ve always found the whole idea of M4/3 fascinating, but much less attractive in real life, simply because APS-C offers a lot more bang for the buck.

Well a native lense is most likely sharper than an adapted lense but thats my guess

This lens is an exciting release. I don't do too much very wide angle so I would probably go with the cheaper alternative. It would be awesome if Panasonic came out with a f2 version of their 35-100mm. Olympus did with the old DSLR line up. I could see that in my camera bag.
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
I agree, f2.8 is too slow.
@NeonShores5 жыл бұрын
So watching the focus zoom test it appears the lens isn't truly parfocal, but close?
@mikebossy54005 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, none of the m43 are parfocal (either manually or by electronics). Panasonic don't want to kill their cine camera and video camera business, after all. Just like Canon and Sony. Otherwise they would have addressed the auto-focus issues (lack of phase detection focus and only bad contrast detection focus) long ago on their cameras (except videos or cine ones, which don't have this problems, btw).

You're the best, I really like your reviews. I own the 10-25mm and the AFC in video is as fast as my A7III with the firmware 2.6. But I thought I had a bad sample because of the noise of the AFC but you showed in your video it was a normal behavior. Thank you.

Hey Gordon, bought your book mate :) thanks for this. Very difficult decision for me at this stage - in order to afford this lens, I have to give up (trade in) my trusty Oly 12-40mm, 17mm f1.8, 25mm f1.8 and 9-18mm. (but I'll keep my 45mm f1.8 and 75mm f1.8) i.e. I'm trading my tiny primes for this godzilla... But boy, the f1.7 constant aperture is just so enticing! Just considering whether I could seriously walk around with this lens for street photography (without scaring people). It'll pair up very well with my EM1 Mk3.

If you buy a camera, get one with a full frame sensor. It may seem more expensive at first, but it's actually the best system in terms of value for money.
@andersistbesser5 жыл бұрын
Landscope 360 no it is not.
@youknowwho92475 жыл бұрын
@@andersistbesser Yes, it is. Comparing pieces of gear that delivers equivalent results, full frame is consistently the most cost efficient option. The only reason crop sensor gear seems cheaper is because the quality floor is lower.
@andersistbesser5 жыл бұрын
Landscope 360 cost efficent? Ff is not cost efficent at all. If you want cost efficent you buy a mft cam. Cheaper bodys much cheaper lenses. You also can have a 200-800 lense without breaking the bank or your neck if you carry it around.. a ff frame system can cost 2-5 times more than other systems but the picture quality is never! Two times as good. Most people wont notice any difference . Ff is not worth it for 95 percent of all photographers i dont care about pixel peepers.
@youknowwho92475 жыл бұрын
@@andersistbesser You need to look up the word "efficient" in a dictionary. This isn't about the lowest possible cost, it's about bang for the buck. Of course it's possible to go cheaper with crop sensors if you want. But that's only because the quality floor is lower. Cheap consumer grade crop sensor gear offers such low optical performance that comparable options don't exist for full frame, because nobody would buy them. The Panasonic 14-42 kit zoom for example is equivalent to a 28-82 f7-11 on full frame. That lens obviously doesn't exist, it wouldn't sell. Now, if you're ok with such low quality optics, crop sensor formats are your best option. But as soon as you want pro grade image quality, the tables turn. When you get into territory where crop sensor glass has comparable full frame alternatives, the full frame option is consistently the cheapest. In the full frame world, you get a 24-70 f/4 for as little as 500 bucks new. The equivalent 16-55 f/2.8 for aps-c will cost you at least twice as much. The corresponding 12-35 f/2 for MFT doesn't exist, but a 10-25 f/1.7 does, which is very close and costs 2000 dollars. So yeah, full frame is the most cost efficient system. That doesn't mean it's got the lowest entry point - it doesn't. It's perfectly possible to go cheaper with crop sensor systems, although among them an APS-C DSLR would be cheaper and produce better results than MFT. However, comparing cost efficiency, meaning performance per dollar, full frame is the system that offers the best bang for the buck.

Great review! Hell of a lens! As a beginner videographer no way can I justify that price tho, I have just bought a gh5 with 18-35mm lumix lens which is great but I’m really after that sub 2.0 aperture. Can you recommend a prime/art lens a: a lot cheaper and b: I’m completely fine with having a fixed zoom. Any help will be much appreciated 😊
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
Most of the cheaper sub-f2 lenses aren't wide, so it depends what focal length you want. As Felix says, the 25mm f1.7 - and also the 45mm f1.7 if you want a telephoto - are both great choices.

It delivers results equivalent to a 20-50 f/3.5 on full frame. I don't understand the craze. This ridiculously overpriced lens is pretty much equal to a full frame kit lens if you take away half its zoom range, and significantly worse than a standard 24-70 f/2.8 unless you absolutely need the 4mm on the short end. This lens is the perfect example for me that MFT gear is sold by employing the most ridiculous marketing tricks.
