I think at this point in my shooting career, I'd go for a couple of smaller primes. I have the 15mm 1.7 and I love it. I like to travel as light as possible. Currently eyeing the 9mm f/1.7 but it's not yet available in my region. I use a few zooms for most of my shooting. But, not going to lie, that 10-25mm is tempting. Size and cost are the deterrent right now. Thank you for your videos. You're a breath of fresh air! I watch them all!

Haha. Hi Marlene. I've got my eye on the new 9mm also. Henry's has a price for pre order that is still looking good given the recent surge in the U.S. dollar. The pre order price equivalent in the U.S. is already higher.

Hi Marlene-- Love your channel..you have literally held my hand with my G9 it seems. I have the 10-25,, it's amazing but almost never goes out of the house/studio. I agree on the 15mm 1.7--maybe my favorite lens. Don't forget the Sigma 1.4 primes--they are amazing. I checked my Panasonic dealer here and they didn't have the 9mm on the shelf--But I'm interested too. Best of luck and keep making great videos!

I used to use the 10-25 on one camera and 45/1.2 on the second camera at events before cancer and I had to sell all my gear. Now I generally have a 12/1.4 and 56/1.4. With the 9mm, 20mm, and 75mm in my waist lens pouch. Chemo damage, weight matters and both cameras are EM1s now instead of one a G9. Of course since I am retred mostly, I just do events for special old clients and do not have the income I did when working. My outdoor shooting is a 9-25/4 amd 40--150/4 with the 9, 56 and 17/1.2 just because I love the prints from the 17/1.2 and my hires photostacking is setup for that lens, I had so many lens and now it is all synergy to cut weight.

Gotta throw in a few accolades here... I used to shoot full frame DSLR (Nikon), but when I started picking up video work I opted for MFT and the 10-25mm was a part of what won me over. Now I own both (the 10-25mm and the 25-50mm). Yep, they're just... so, so, so good. They keep me anchored in the MFT system. They just ooze quality, and every time you touch them you're reminded why they're so pricey. Had a Nocticron 42.5 f/1.2 (fantastic lens!) but couldn't justify keeping it alongside the 25-50mm, which has more versatility and is, well, just as good - I use it for portraits and performance coverage mostly. The 10-25mm is just fantastic for family photography, groups in tight spaces (without getting terribly wonky exaggerated perspectives), and general indoor event coverage. And video, of course. They're both pretty much impervious to chromatic aberration, they're impeccable at any aperture, they've got fast, precise and silent autofocus, gush, gush gush... Yep, they're big but I suppose coming from full frame it doesn't bother me as much. As a combo for weddings and events and so on (using 2 bodies), they're wonderful. The main disadvantage is that owning them dissuades you from buying other lenses... for a while, but then you cave in and rationalize it and get more... (I also use the Oly 12-100 for more general stuff, and a couple Laowa primes... but I can quit anytime, really! :)

Thanks for your review! Since I bought the 10-25, it's the only lens that's been on my Olympus EM1 Mk3... it's so super versatile. Yeah, size is a wee problem, but can't have everything in a world limited by physics! Great review.

I have both and sold all my f1.2/ 1.4 primes (5 of them) which (almost) paid for the 2 zooms. For a paid shoot, when I need the best and have to carry the weight, there is no comparison for quality and versatility. For hobby or travelling, I have a few f1.7/ f1.8 primes to take with. For a wedding, the 2 zooms, plus a 75mm f1.8 on 3 bodies covers 80% of the shoot. A fisheye (8mm f1.8 Pro), 60mm macro and a 40-140 zoom come along for a few options when time allows it. People talk about FF and a f2.8 zoom being better, and that's fine, but theses f1.7 zooms and m43 do a stellar job too. And with some other lenses I have, the really small primes and zooms available, and the smaller m43 camera body range models, m43 does fun and travel really well too. Thanks for another great video.

I may have a different perspective than some... I use my G9 and PL 10-25 as part of my wedding and event kit pretty much exclusively. I also have a G95 as a backup event body and that usually has a Sigma 30 f/1.4, Sigma 56 f/1.4, or Oly 40-150 f/2.8 attached depending on the venue. For personal photography or travel, I leave behind the G9 and go with my GX85, G95, or GX1 (if I'm feeling nostalgic). I have a bunch of smaller lenses (plus a 45-200 II and PL 12-60 which are smallish) like the 14 f/2.5, 20 f/1.7, 12-32, 12-60 f/3.5-5.6, 35-100 f/4-5.6, Mitakon 25 f/0.95, and a few others which all work really well as a lightweight outfit. If I need to be really stealthy or will be traveling in a super high crime area then I take only a Lumix LF1. I would love to have the 25-50 f/1.7 but I haven't identified a personal use case that warrants the price. For those who do have a use for it, I'm sure it's just as excellent as the 10-25.

Hi Emily, very nice study and comparison! I have the Olympus 12-100mm as my main lens, and it is my workhorse for almost everything. I do have a series of primes (Pana 15mm f1.7, 25mm f1,7, 42,5mm f1,7, Sigma 30mm f1,4 and the macro lens OLY 60mm f2,8,) but I use these only on special occasions or projects. THe aspect of one lens basically covering all situations is tempting, especially with each change of lenses you have a risk of introducing dust, moisture, etc. I ended up having dirt on the sensor which was very difficult to get rid of, and being able to avoid this would really justify the one - lens concept. However, even with my 12-100 lens (and much more for the pair of Leica PAnasonic lenses, the focal range may not always be sufficient, and a wide-angle lens or a real tele lens,100-300 or 100-400 (which is on my wish list...) are necessary. THerefore my bottomline is: there is no such thing on the market like one lens that could fulfil all situations, and, if it were, it would be extremely big and heavy, and way too expensive.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the f/1.7 zoom pair, Emily! Personally, I prefer primes for big group venues, parties, and similar events that I feel are worth carrying the pro gear. In particular, I'm quite smitten by the image quality and utility of the 17mm f/1.2 and 45mm f/1.2* the same roles you cited in these shooting events: getting close and getting candids, respectfully. Though the 17mm f/1.2 does do candids quite nicely along with getting wide, doing portraits, etc; it can really step up to a variety of shooting conditions for me because I'm used to the FOV, having access to faster shutter speeds/lower ISO in darker conditions is very helpful for freezing action, and the bokeh is smooth but structured. When used wide open, it feels realistic without blowing out information in the background, which can help elevate the composition, e.g. where crowd reactions are involved. And that's still while providing enough separation between the subject and the background. I don't have qualms with cropping in on either lens (which really confuses my desire for the 25mm f/1.2) but occasionally I wish I could go wider with the 17mm f/1.2 while still having easy access to the overall image quality I mentioned earlier. Still, I usually find some angles that provide acceptable compositions in the end that still keep proportions intact while being close. Stretching out a chin or leg is all-too easy up close. *The 75mm f/1.8 can be alternated with the 45mm f/1.2, if I need the reach. If only it had weather sealing...

I'd love to see Olympus (or om system now I guess) take a shot at trying to make a 10-20/25mm f2 lens. Something more focused on photography and being smaller. I really like the idea of the 10-25mm but it's just far too big and I'd never end up using it lol. If it was more like the f1.2 pro lenses in size I'd absolutely get it over the two primes I have in that range. It would reduce my kit size from 3 to 2 lenses and mean I'd never need to change lenses in the field Oh and you're right about the 25mm f1.4 pana leica being an awesome lens. It was my first and only prime for my first two years of photography. Nothing will make me part with it

Panasonic had a tendency to make smaller fast lenses then Olympus though 12-35 f/2.8 vs 12-40 f/2.8 35-100 f/2.8 vs 40-150 f/2.8 Of course these are not the exact same focal lengths, but I'm not sure Olympus would design something smaller if they did one similar.

Very informative and nice footage, especially at 03:23 . To make a "change" there is one point I really like: the weight! Believe me or not, but I like it to have a lens with a good weight in my hand... But a change is not in my mind, because 10mm is not wide enough while using the 8 - 18mm. The range between 18 to 25 is not in my interest obviously I use the high quality 12 - 60 and the 25 prime. Thank you for sharing that video and your sense of humor... 👍

They look absolutely brilliant! If I were a professional, and I wanted to stay in micro four thirds, I would absolutely buy them, the versatility and quality are unmatched, not just between Oly and Pana cameras. BUT! ...but since I'm not a professional, I really don't mind carrying a handful of prime lenses for low light and more creative stuff, when I'm really bothered about not changing lens is when I go hiking, to avoid dust and rain on the sensor: if there ever was a "one lens to rule them all" that I wish Panasonic or Olympus made is a 10-100, a 10x zoom factor like the 14-140 (which I have and love) but giving up some reach in order to cover almost all of the "holy trinity" in a single, small and light lens, which you don't ever need to take off, so the perfect setup for a hike.

A few versatile primes for the very reason we wanted MFT in the beginning...the sheer size. Sure the G9 body is bigger than some FF bodies but the MFT and even APS-C lenses are generally much more manageable than their FF equivalents. Even the Panasonic/Lumix zooms are so much easier to cart around. Plus, it's always exciting to see a new small prime and have fun exploring its capability. Easier to spend slowly in smaller chunks than take a mortgage out on FF size lenses OR the two behemoths you just spent the month using. I have my eye on that wonderful new 9 mm f 1.7 Pana/Leica. :)

I was of the opinion that MFT had lost its way a half-dozen or so years ago when I was able to hold up my 70s vintage Pentax ME film camera and the damn thing (FULL FRAME BY DEFINITION) was smaller than a Panasonic MFT I was looking at in a shop window. I know that's SORT of cheating, but a few years before that, I'd passed through Sydney Airport Duty Free and seen the (relatively) teeny tiny MFT cameras Olympus was launching, no bigger than the old Pentax 70s film bodies (and the Olympus OM film series) and thought "You know what, if I wasn't already eyeball-deep in Pentax APS-C, this would be a thing I might have done." A lot of film-era full-frame primes are really quite compact, even the f/1.4s and occasional f/1.2s. The modern obsession with creating a humungous block of glass in order to cancel out every conceivable aberration might produce some technically beautiful images, but for the vast majority of enthusiast users, I find myself asking whether it's really necessary.

Never had anything like that with panasonic, i even have Lumix g7 it was my b cam years ago never failed and better 1080 footage than a7iii ))) same as 2x gh5 i have somewhere in my closed with ripped hdmi ports , screens and broken memorycard slots but that was a serious mechanical damage, while sony just falls apart in your backpack.

I’ve had the 10 - 25 for 18 months now, I did not sell the 25 1.4 lens as I love the image so much, however in truth I can’t remember the last time I used it. If I stay with M43 I will be looking at the 25-50 soon. The only issue at the moment is I have borrowed a Sony A7iv! You can tell everybody including yourself that you don’t need/use autofocus ( I have been telling people for 2 years that Panasonic autofocus is good enough) but the Sony autofocus is another level. I’m the first to understand that manual focus is better in certain situations, however to have solid/reliable autofocus is game changer for a longtime Panasonic user.

I have had the 10-25 since Nov 2021 (bought second hand!) bolted onto my G9 and had loved using it until early June 22 when it just suddenly stopped focusing correctly! It might gain focus then lose it or just not at all etc - Long story short - there is nowhere in the UK that can repair these lenses and my only option was to basically PX it at Panasonic's service and repair centre for a considerable 4 figure sum! My advice is if bought new hold on to that receipt tightly and ensure it is well insured over the coming years. Good luck and keep pressing that button.

Just like the old film days with photogs hunched over with a couple of EOS1 and the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8. Hey, it’s a paying gig right? I agree with you that these pair are just too large and heavy for casual use. For dedicated photography trips, I like the G9 with the triplet of Laowa 7.5mm f2, Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8, and the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 prime. The camera I have around daily is even simpler. This time last year I thought long and hard about your Leica 10-25mm and the Leica 12mm. I spent weeks pouring over every KZbin review that I could find for those lenses. For me there was a hair's breath between both lenses however I went for the 12mm. Its incredible and its built like a tank, but going off your experience its not as versatile as your 10-25mm. On the bright side, I did buy it from MPB. Winner, winner chicken dinner.😀 When it came to my 25mm prime, I cheaped out and did not buy the Leica version. Its plastic fantastic but it ain't weather sealed.

The 25-50 mm could really benefit from OIS. Also the wider one, but Pana has not implemented OIS in any lens under 25 mm. So the missing OIS is the 25-50 is rather strange. I guess they tried to go for a "cine" lens feeling. On the other hand the regular zooms 12-35 mm f2.8 and the 12-60 mm gives you full OIS and Dual IS2.
@MicroFourNerds
@MicroFourNerds 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought the same! I assumed it had it to be honest until I double-checked. I think you’re right - the cine lens feel for sure. For my needs to really appreciate the dual IS. On the GH6 it doesn’t matter too much but on a non-stabilised body this would be a huge drawback

Interesting lenses. Not very micro 4/3’dsy in terms of size really. Not really all that unique in their properties either when you look at FF alternatives. In terms of equivalence for DOF wide open on FF and shutter speed/real life noise you’d be looking at f3.3 and two stops faster in ISO so all the f2.8 constant zoom lenses for FF (there are millions aren’t there) are realistically faster/wider. I wouldn’t mind betting that there are some very close in size too. I wonder if the efficiency in focusing you find so noticeable has anything to do with being wider aperture. An electronic aperture lens will always focus wide open and then close down to whatever you’ve set for your shot. With contrast AF like Panasonic DFD it’s probably able to home in on the optimal point a bit quicker if the depth around the desired point of focus is smaller. I tend to find the larger aperture primes I have are a bit more sure-footed in focus that the 2.8 zooms.

Emily maybe I missed you mentioning the price. WOW! About $1800 each. Say that fast! As an amateur that is very expensive. Each lens is a mortgage payment. Bundle the two and then oh boy. I’ve been in the M43 world for 10 years and never heard of these lenses. I have the 12-35 & 35-100 f2.8 lenses. Sometimes I’ll go out with the 15 & 45 on two bodies. Great video Emily! I love the concept of bright constant aperture zoom lenses -- like who doesn't want that!? But personally as an amateur photographer who takes picture for fun, I won't buy this lens. It's simply too big too heavy and too expensive. I am not very sensitive to camera body weight and size (my main body is E-M1X), but very sensitive to lens weight and size. Because a larger body gives me better handling, grip, longer battery life, better stabilization, etc. But I feel large lenses are a different story, yeah the f1.7 zooms are optically super stars but they are just too obtrusive for me. These fantastic exotic zoom lenses may be best suited for professional photographers and videographers. I will stick with my mini primes for now :)

A 50-100 like this is what I need, why aren't they a 50-100 f1.7? That would be a real money making machine, I haven't owned or used a wide to normal zoom in years, other than kit lenses I have kicking around, if I have a gig I bring the f2.8 tele zoom and normal, wide, and ultra wide primes, and a macro lense maybe. I have the 35 and the 50, and the ultrawide, which together account for maybe 10-15% of what I'll shoot at the gig, the other 85% is all the 70-200 f2.8. I get calls again and again to be a second shooter for people just because I own the 70-200 f2.8 and a few bright primes, the people who call me, they all have GH5s and Sigma 18-35 f1.8, they don't need to call somebody else in to cover the range of these lenses, they need the telephoto, and I love beig a secod shooter, because I don't have to do any negotiations or advertisement or anything, I don't meet the clients before the day of, I get paid on the night, and I go home with no work left to do. But since the people I work with are alwasy on GH5s, a 50-100 f1.7 would almost be more valuable to me than the 70-200 f2.8 on full frame, I think if I had a 50-100mm f1.7 I could actually rent it out and just stay home and let the weddings shoot themselves, that's how in demand that thing would be. If the 50-100 f1.7 ever comes out I'll sell whatever other camera gear I need to to buy it, and then, maybe I'll use some of the money I make off it to buy one of these others, but I doubt it.
