I really hate the phrase "cameras are just tools" as a way to say that a camera's aesthetics can't play a role in the experience of using a camera. Having a cool camera makes you want to use it, and in turn, will make you a better photographer. The Leica M6 is one such camera.

This video articulates why I own a Sony, but now want to own a Fuji and will likely in the future. The X-T series are just a joy to look at, push buttons on, and make art. And, whatever "character" cameras and lenses can have these days, Fuji is at least pursuing _something_ vs pursuing the cleanest image at 1 billion ISO. GxAce, if the Leica M6 inspires you to shoot great photos, then by these examples it's working.

I think what is a quintessential camera will differ from person to person. To me it a Pentax K1000. Affordable, produced for many many decades, iconic. Found in the hands of amateurs, photography students, professionals, enthusiasts, and everything in-between. In this case I do think a camera is just a tool. K1000 was made to be everything to everybody, and for many years it was. Incredibly simple, reliable. It was made to just work. And you also get a selection of Pentax lenses from the period, most of which are extraordinary. Just like you and Leica, I have that connection with Pentax. It was my first film camera I learned to shoot with. I still have it. I don't shoot anymore, or not very often at least. But it's still part of what my life is, and has been. It left a mark in my memories that I cherish like everything else.

One of my favorite quotes is from Jeff Winger on the pilot episode of Community. "For the same reason I can pick up this pencil, tell you it's name is Steve and go like this. (snaps pencil) And part of you dies just a little bit on the inside. Because people can connect with anything." The photo community often downplays or outright denegrates care for gear/equipment/etc as a detraction of the photographic arts. I've never understood it. Our ability to care about almost anything, from stories to people to things, is why we can go millenia and still create new artistic ideas. What the photo community often doesn't talk about is that instead of disciplining ourselves to focus on both the tools and the art in equilibrium, we use "gear doesn't matter" and the "camera is just a tool" as a scapegoat to not have to do the extra work of establishing that equlibrium; inevitably robbing ourselves of what both halves of that experience can grant us. This video is everything I love about that equilibrium. Letting the tool inspire your art and vice versa. You're a breath of fresh air to this space dude. Looking forward to the next piece.

The phrase is not meant to you, it is precisely for those that aren't patient enough to understand their tools until they turn them into pens to express themselves. They will painfully purchase the next hyped smartphone, or the treasured Leica, lying to themselves that the famous camera is doing better photos. On Sunday I person shared photos with his iPhone, whose horizon was unintentionally unleveled, that the photos are natural because they have no editing, and I don't check many Leica galleries because I see the same attitude, they are testing tools set by engineers far away, but they are not seen in the photo. I can see you in these photos. (Edit: these terms, now I recall Ken Rockwell had an article about it, like finding your signature)

If you can try an M3 give it a shot. Shooting 50mm on it is so fun because I can shoot it with both eyes open. It feels like having some overlay on my vision of what 50mm is

Maaaan if only I wasn’t poor. I’d loooove directing films with a camera like that- like I know it’s for photography but maaan! Or even just take photos with it and use it as the background for some animations. You just seriously need to create a short film already, I’m gonna do one too but you actually have the GEAR! Get some friends! Write a script- screw it lemme whip out a script real quick for someone to use maybe. Although I am a pretty bad writer- but who cares, make a film!
