I just bought a CLE and I am enjoying it! Such a joy to use!
I've had the Leica Cl for about 43 years. I bought the Cl used. At some point the meter stopped working and I spent a couple hundred dollars trying to get it to work and it didn't work. Finally I sent it to Leitz in New Jersey and the told me that the meter fails because the wire on from the meter oxides from outgassing from the battery and broke the wire within the insulation so it's not evident. I think it cost about $100 to replace the wire (all labor) and they recalibrated it for the alkaline battery because the mercury batteries were no longer available. Since then it's worked perfectly. I've taken it to Africa at least twice and it's gorgeous for landscape and animal photos in the context of their surroundings.

I used to shoot weddings on 2 Minolta X700’s back in the early 90’s with a 50mm Rokkor lens and a 24mm Tokina. I used to shoot more in a documentary style while everyone else used Bronica medium formats.I still have the cameras. The CLE is very similar except the X700’s are SLRs. My all time favourite camera is the Minolta XD7. The winder is like a knife through butter, so smooth. Your CLE is absolutely mint. I so want that camera.

Have you made sure that the meter is in fact bad. A lot of times it works fine but the way you advance the film lever makes it retract all the way into the body and this turns the meter off.

11:00 East Block Boy is right. The made in Canada M4-2 began production after the M5 and CL. The M6 came in 1984. A bit confusing, yes. It was an attempt to get back to the earlier M bodies that Leica fans loved.

Official Leica claims that the CL production was stoped because even after 85.0000 units were sold the CL wasn’t a commercial success. During its production run it out soled the M5 by 2:1. On paper it looks like Leitz stoped the production because of this ratio but it could also well be that the production fees Leitz had to pay and the relative low asking price of 950 Deutsche Mark (what my grand dad payed in 74) had simply not enough margin in it for Leitz continuing to sell the CL under the Leica brand. After 74 Minolta continued with the production of the CL under the Minolta Name for the Japanese and US marked, about 40.000 more unites were produced (source camera quest). In 1981 Minolta released a model update of the CL with the CLE. By the way Minolta and Leitz continued to collaborate on the R series by production of lese elements and electronic components and technological development. Minolta also produced a lot of Leitz early compacts as batch engendered products much like Panasonic does today with the Lumix series cameras.

As I’ve said many time I just love my Minolta CLE, with its great film back. I cant understand a professional using Leica 35 mm cameras that falls to pieces, like they all do, so that on a job you have to juggle with two pieces of camera ? Leica have stubbornly stuck to this design for heritage reasons, and not adapted to the more professional loading method, of nearly all pro cameras. Added to which they all weigh a ton, for no good reason. Everyone I hear say, Oh the build quality, but it’s a tool first and Jewellery. second . It’s very much like claiming Oh the heavier the better ? When working on jobs loading film has to be done ASAP, Oh just dropped the bottom of my really heavy Leica, give me a moment while I find it ... WHAT ? Virtually no professional photographers in the days of film, on magazines, editorial and advertising, that I knew, used Leicas , except for their personal and fun use maybe. So for me the CLE is the best of both worlds, great lenses, compact, silent, easy to load, discreet, and can be used for work and fun... LOVE IT !

Hey Samuel, I was wondering if you’ve ever seen strange behavior with the meter. The copy I just acquired will sometimes not respond immediately to touch (in aperture priority mode). Also, it will sometimes give an immediate reading that is either low or high and then normalize after a second to the correct reading. Has this behavior been your experience as well? Love the channel and the episodes with film!
@palesmichael5 ай бұрын
I would swear that those minoltas do not suffer from schneideritis. Its afaik degradation of coatings. Schneideritis is mostly about developing air boubles between glass and the black colour on the outside of the group (between lens body and glass) It can be repaired by removing the problematic colour and reapplying it back. I am not aware about any method capable of restoring the coatings.

If you are going to give a historical summary, it helps to get it right! The CL was a join venture between Leica and Minolta, with Minolta providing the CL body to Leica's design. Minolta retained certain rights to produce a camera with M-mount, but did not at the time. Leica killed the CL two or three years later because the CL was eating into sales of regular Leica bodies, which hurt Leica's profits. A year or two later, Minolta produced the CLE, which can fairly be described as the camera Leica should have built in the first case. Minolta also built its own line of lenses to give Leica quality built at a price more fitting with the CLE. Leica continued their partnership in camera production for many years, as Leica gave up building their own SLR models after the first two, which had the same nutty design features which killed the Contarex for Zeiss 15 years earlier. All of the later Leicaflex models were basically rebadged versions the current top of the line Minolta SLRs but with the Leicaflex mount.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the video! In my personal experience the CLE can last easily for half a year with two batteries. But since I started turning the camera completely off whenever I don't use it I haven't encountered any battery loss since over half a year (usually you notice when the metering isn't working in the viewfinder).
