I just picked up the M10-P as I shoot with an M6 mostly. I have owned several versions of the X100 series including the latest V, but I really am so much in tune with the simplicity of the M series, that the V just got in the way with too many options and the fact that there is no real lens choices for the V and with the M - well there's at least 3 major manufacturers and several smaller companies as well and so many vintage lenses to choose from Leica, Canon, Nikon, Voightlander, Zeiss, etc...

Affordability is obviously a factor we all have to deal with. Having a Fuji X100V for a year now has shown me what a wonderful camera it is. Would I want to upgrade to the Leica M10... sure but my budget won't allow it. But considering how you compare the two shows me how similar they are in quality. While I'd also l would like interchangeable lenses with the Leica, I actually enjoy having the limitation of using the one lens (while occasionally using the digital 50mm and 70mm in a pinch). I now see shooting with the 35mm equivalent a throw back to old-school photography using one lens. No more zooming in/out for framing... use your feet and get into the frame of action. It's somehow more fulfilling for me. Anyway, thanks for the great comparison.

I have never owned or used a Fuji X100V because I need interchangeable lenses. I have owned and used two Leica M10 digital rangefinders with the following lenses left over from my Leica M6 days: 21mm f/1.4 35mm f/1.4 90mm f/2 Before the two Leica M10 cameras, I owned and used Fuji X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 APS-C digital mirrorless with the following lenses: 16mm f/1.4 23mm f/1.4 56mm f/1.2 Originally, I had planned on selling the Fuji digitals after I bought the M10. However, my two M10s were so defective that I changed my mind. I now continue to use my Fujis for professional work and use the one M10 I still own as an expensive paperweight.

Risk is definitely something I keep coming back to with Leica, no weather sealing isn't ideal in England. That and the cost of anything Leica whether it be spare batteries, accessories or new lenses. Weather sealing, jpegs and cost is a draw to something like an xpro or x100 body but the feel just isn't the same as a Leica

Great video. I’ve sold and repurchased the x100v three times. In between those purchases, I did get a M10. The M10 was great, but had a sensor defect. Leica was going to replace under warranty, but would take several weeks, so I returned it, and got another x100v. I missed the auto focus and built in flash. I may pick up a M10 again if I can find a good deal.

Wait wouldn't Leica people call a sensor defect a feature or character? 😂

My X100F has been gathering a bit of dust since I bought an M10R. When I bring it out, I set it to B&W JPEG only because I don’t notice the quality difference as much in monochrome. I do think the X100 series has some unique advantages, like fill flash and flash sync. But the gulf in quality between the two is just too vast, and I agree that sometimes it just makes sense to bring my phone only when things are casual. I think Q2/Q3 + M10 would be a more complementary combo. The M10 just sucks you into a photo composing mindset, and my partner would prefer that to not always happen. Would be useful to have a full auto camera with similar quality to the M. But, alas, that’s too expensive for me.

The experience was the deciding factor, I had the x100v for 3 days and the start time + image processing time was too slow for my taste. The m10 perfectly balanced the experience / speed and actually having manual focus with focal distance markers was the true deciding factor.

Even though the M Leicas are not being advertised as weather sealed it has somehow become an urban myth here on social media that they can’t take any beating or fail at the first drop of water. I had been out on a trip to Southeast Asia and the weather turned out to be a complete catastrophe in terms of rain, moist and heat. The M didn’t miss a beat and neither the lens or the body got any damage and if so it can always be fixed. So as long as you don’t drop it into a pond it will be fine.

I think I say this too, it gets to a point where regardless of what the spec sheet says it comes down to your own willingness to accept risk. And for me personally, I won’t risk my M10 in the rain due to the value. But I can see why many would be willing to accept it

Great video as always. Love your natural and humble style! I own Xpro3, M10-D and X100V. I sold the 'V' a few weeks back as it was collecting dust. As you said, while I love the output of the Fuji Jpeg files the camera itself was a bit "soulless" too me. Xpro3 (with M Lenses) and M10-D offers a more enjoyable experience...

Insightful video as always Goughie. I had the X100V and M10 last year and came to a similar conclusion about them clashing. For me it was exacerbated by the fact I don’t have as much time dedicated to shooting. Most times I’m out with my wife and kids and trying to make photos while out. On paper, the X100V was a better camera but I was always drawn to the M10 even though it was less practical for my lifestyle. I ended up selling the X100V to try to force myself to focus on using the M10 and using my phone as the point and shoot. That was short-lived and I ended up picking up a Q2 because I just struggle to enjoy shooting with my phone at all. Fast forward to today, I sold the Q2 and picked up an X-T5 as a “utility camera” to complement the M10 and do the things the M10 can’t. I’m hoping I can use the X-T5 w/ the 18mm f/2 or one of the other fujicrons will satisfy the times I want an EDC. The idea is to keep it to two cameras with distinct features/functionality etc while still meeting the casual photography requirement.

@@Goughie yeah having your hands full (literally and figuratively) takes away from the enjoyment of using the M10. It’s getting a bit easier now that they’re older but carrying an infant/toddler in one hand and shooting a rangefinder in the other is tricky.

The M9 has been living in my camera bag since owning it and I use it everyday. Think I’m still in the honeymoon period with it. But I did start to miss the Fuji X-Pro1 so took it out recently. I love that camera. I have the 23mm f1.4 for it, but it’s a big old lens, so usually the 18mm f2 is my go to option. Love the rendering of that lens. I like the M9 precisely because it has no features really. Just turn on and shoot. Merry Christmas mate.

You might consider a comparison between the M10 and the XPro 3. It has interchangeable lenses. I can't afford an M10 so I can't compare but I do love my x100v and my XPro3. And yes, I can afford both, and some lenses, and still have change over the M10! Great video though!

i have thought about this in a similar situation - I have a X100S for "fun" shooting and a M6 for "serious art" photoprojects and I try to convince myself that the fuji is redundant (the phone is maybe enough in most situations ) but I always end up keeping the fuji too ...

When you need AF, you use the X100V. For everything else, use the Leica M. Also to even lessen the redundancy: 28mm and 50mm on an M 35mm equivalent on an X100V .

I've only been lucky enough to try out an m10 in a Leica store, but I think an m10 could more or less be a camera used for a less serious sort of shooting, you can put either the shutter or iso at auto, and use the zone focus as an autofocus (sort of) and you got yourself a point and shoot just like the x100v! If only the m10 had weather sealing. Great pictures and video as always 👍

You know what i actually deleted the segment where I said you could zone focus, but even then I think you struggle in so many situations, way where really a small aperture doesn’t work I quite like the challenge of using the M10 in them situations and worst case, out comes the trusty iPhone 😂

I had an M10, thinking that X100V could substitute it, bought the fuji and sold within 2 weeks. No matter how hard I try to play with JPEG setting or editing in post, I couldn't get the level of micro contrast and the depth of color M10 gives. The M camera produces images that can hit you differently. It can sound far fetched but images from M10 feel like it captured the soul of the moment while the fuji could only capture the appearance. M10 also feels so good in the hand that I could pick it up everyday at home just to fidget with. The X100V felt like a cheap toy even though it's already better built than most cameras on the market. X100V can take images that look like a really nice phone image, but M10's images are visibly different in character. Obviously a lot of this character comes from a collection of M mount lenses spanning decades in age, each with its own visual signature. In terms of pleasure of photography, there is also no contest here.

It’s a shame about them cameras, kind of funny how the worst part about them was made my Kodak not Leica, to give Leica credit they supported the M9 for 11 years which is pretty crazy in the tech world, the XT1 is only 9 years old not sure if you can still get them fixed, More recently the first batch of M11s were plagued with issues which is crazy at the price point but all replaced under warranty

The Fuji X-Series is TOTALLY OVERRATED and overpriced! Compromizing image quality in terms of sacrificing the signature Full Frame/Medium Format 3D-Pop (which especially Leica and older DSLRs paired with certain lenses are known for) just the portability factor is a trade-off I am not willing to take. Yes the X-Series are super small and light weight, but the praised "film look" is an illusion the brand and payed KZbinrs are trying to sell you, when in reality it misses one of the most important optical trades of analog cameras - the 35mm size medium! Also these KZbinrs often do way more editing to their JPEGs than they are admitting! All the film sims and recipes I tried intensively looked nothing like the shown sample images without having to do a lot to them in post! And most of them only work in very specific light conditions and are not very versatile. Mostly I find myself then shooting in RAW. The RAWs can be tweaked fairly well though, but that kinda defeats the purpose of buying it for me and it still can't get you the 3D rendering from a Full Frame back. So I found I rather pack my trusty DLSR with a tiny prime lense to compensate for weight at least a little, and just HAVE the look that I want, rather than packing the small one that may be more portable but in the end I regret not having taken the real deal with me, just like the gentleman in the video.
