Back-Button focus in Manual focus mode is a game changer. It means you can set a focus zone in a second, even while your subject is just approaching shot. It's a superb hybrid of auto-focus and manual Zone focus.

After a year of using the 100V exclusively, I concur with your findings with a few additional observations: 1 - F 5.6 is the sweet spot of the lens and F2.2 is preferable to F2.0. I only close the lens down further for exposure control with slow shutter techniques and only use F2.0 at night. 2 - I often use F 5.6 in Hyperfocal technique set to 8 FT acquired with AF-L assigned to the front lever button. 23mm @ 8 FT = 6 FT - 16 FT DOF [social distanced ; ] I’ve always set back button focus to a front button i.e. pressing against the face being more accurate than away from it. With distance set by AF-L, I won’t accidentally brush off a MF setting. 3 - The Q Menu Button may be set to None. The few items I change are in My Menu [love it] by order of frequency or assigned to a button. Goodbye D Pad ; ] 3 - I have large hands, release the shutter at the “first joint” of my index finger, and carry the camera on a custom 24” x 1/2” leather strap wrapped once around my wrist. Ergonomics have never been a problem. [Except] 4 - The Front Dial “button” function is too easily activated with handling…my ONLY complaint with this camera. I gaffers taped a shim over the bugger where None would have been the preferable option for that button. I also tape over the Indicator light. 5 - I only use the OVF to save battery when shooting from the hip, it’s ok in a pinch but nothing like the true range finder experience of the L word. Had those, wonderful, too heavy, too steal-able. 6 - Bear photography is definitely more exciting with the X100V…you feel like you’re right in there!

Cheers for the input mate! I really like the idea of mapping the back button focus to the front. My grip blocks it slightly, although it not a well placed button for my hands anyways and I like my manual focus so rarely look for it. But if it was more accessible I might be inclined to do a quick pre focus from time to time

I got one in April last year. Had no Fuji before. Never regretted the purchase even my style is not so much street photography (Legal issues in Germany). One big point for me is though I use a Canon 5d iv too that taking pictures with this camera makes people much more at ease as they think the small thingy is not a serious camera. Makes a difference if you have a x100 in in front of your face than using a big DSLR. Second point is the Leaf Shutter for using a flashlight, just great to use in many situations!

A suggestion around one-handing and the grip: I have the Fuji branded leather half-case, and it adds just enough bulk and stickiness to the front and back of the grip as to make it feel much more comfortable in my hand (which is to say, I don't feel like I'm going to drop it all the time). I think you're right in saying it's a bit of a niche camera, but if it checks your boxes, as it does mine, it's a great piece of kit. I pretty much never leave it at home. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for making my mind up on the X100v. I’ve been watching a lot of KZbin reviews and had pretty much made up my mind to get it. The mention of 3 Magnum photogs using them clinched it. Now if the only one that was available in the NVA/DC region as of yesterday is still available tomorrow 🙏. Condolences on your pooch. My wife and I have been rescuing feral cats and kittens for the last 36 years. Cats and dogs with no hope who end up getting Forever homes always seem to be a little more special. We’ve kept pairs of them and have 3 now (soon to be 4) for a total of 10 over the years. They keep us laughing and joyful every day. Cheers.

The magnum photographers may have had the older versions as it’s been over a few years I’ve seen them using them, but that was part of the reason I went for the x100v too. It’s amazing how they’re still hard to come by after being released over a year ago! Hope you are able to get hold of one. Rescue animals are often the most rewarding, I think. I once was able to rescue a kitten while I was working at a summer camp, it’s sibling had died in a bucket of oil by the maintenance shed and the boss was ready to just get rid of it by any means necessary. I kept it in the staff lounge for a couple of weeks and was looking for a rescue but the chef and his kids asked to take him. He’s lived a long happy life with them ever since. Warms my heart.

I recently sold my Nikon D750 and all my lenses to get a Sony a7iii and currently only have one lens for it (Tamron 28-75). The next logically step would to be to buy more lenses for my Sony but this camera is so appealing to me. I don’t find myself bringing my Sony with me much. Only when I’m planning on going out shooting or going hiking or something similar. This seems like such a good camera to bring with you on a day to day basis without having to lug around a heavier camera. I might buy this instead of a new lens.

I am new to Fuji and bought xt-4 back in the end of October. I had issues with it and sent it back for Fuji to take a look at it. With Brexit and covid it took longer to get replacement. So I bought 100v two weeks ago to have a camera in my pocket and for street photography. When you look at buying filters and hoods that is a must I think I would advise people to go for XT-4 because the price difference isn't that much. Then if you are going to buy a grip for 100v then XT--4 would suit better. I was undecided between GR III and 100v but there are some issues with the dial button on the GR., after having both in my hand the Fuji is a better build camera that I feel will last a lot longer. On the. next upgrade I would like more functions button to reduce going into menu. It would be great to be able set the 100v and XT-4 the same way and if they used the same batteries. Take care Liam
@TheLiamGordon3 жыл бұрын
Sensible input, Terry. Cheers! I find Fuji to be a strange brand that makes picking a camera hard, at times. They put the same sensor in their flagship and low end models so they all put out about the same IQ. So sometimes we're left trying to figure out what the benefits are. I originally had an X100S, then wanted an X-Pro2 but got an XT-2 as it seemed to be able to do more in a cheaper package. But now that I've used an X-Pro2, I like it better. There's no real rational reason other than i like shooting with it more. So with the X100V it's the same thing. The X-T4 is easily the better camera. It can do far more. But the X100V is what I'd rather be carrying around all day. This is why I mention at the end of the video that it's really niche, and not for everybody. So if it doesn't check all your boxes it's not going to be worth it. X-T4 was the first to use that battery so I think going forward we'll start to see new models using the newer battery too... I think :)

Yeah, when launched, many moaned (just for the sake of it in my opinion) that Fuji had added the flip screen. If they'd been honest (the moaners), it didn't change the X100V in any way in comparison to the previous generations as it was so discrete, you'd not know it was there if it hadn't been pointed out to you... It's there if you find the need it but invisible otherwise. The D-pad: well, getting rid of it was a good idea in my opinion but... The real problem is where they placed the joystick as it's in the wrong place. It's right where most people rest their thumbs when holding the camera to take a photograph (they've corrected that on the X-E4 as it down where the D-pad would be) and causes the focal point to be moved accidentally: usually with you noticing until we'll into the shoot (the same problem happens on my XF10]. That's why my black X100V sports a JJC handgrip and a Lensmate thumb rest too. Accent? Whit accent?... 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴

Helpful video. My GRIII broke in rain and looks like X100V is closest in size that has high flash X sync and weather sealing. Last summer I mostly shot the family stuff with GR and Lightpix flash and the high X sync is must. But, biggest issue is that this is not pocketable and looks like a camera. But with Ricoh, the colors, especially skintones to me have always been a tad poor and terrible after iso 800. Best solution would be to buy GRIII again + X100V, since all my other cameras are 1D bodies, but right now I am so infuriated of the short lifespan of my GRIII I am very tempted to buy something else. But having had GR in my life from 2013, feeling of loss of that secret camera you could flip out from your pocket at any situation without being noticed could become an issue. But then again there have been many situations where something with a tad more crop and subject separation would be better. When you only have GR with you, you miss the capability to shoot portraits with background separation.
@TheLiamGordon3 жыл бұрын
Yeah finding that balance of size and durability can be frustrating. I'm lucky to live somewhere where rain is rarely an issue. The GR tends to be the camera I'll take everywhere when I'm not going out specifically to shoot and I think I'll always have one or something similar from now on. My X100V developed viewfinder issues so is no longer my main street camera but it was nice to know I had the weather sealing when I needed it.

Nice video. I have an X100F and it is brilliant. My GR3 is my every day camera as it’s like you say, it is pocketable. I don’t know how some people say the X100 cameras are... must have clown trousers! Nice touch with the zine profits too 👍

To be fair, the F is everything I actually needed. I always forget that I was shopping for an F when I stumbled upon a used V at a surprisingly low price at B&H. Clown pants are a must for pocketability 😂

If you don't have the cash for the X100, what are the next tiers down, that are still respectable?
@TheLiamGordon3 жыл бұрын
I think a used x100f is still great. The Ricoh gr3 is preferred by many. A Fuji x-pro2 or x-t2 + 23mm might still be cheaper. X-e3 +23mm I think will be quite affordable. Even the xt20 body should be affordable. Wherever you go in the Fuji line, the image quality should be great. They used the same sensors across the x series and just changed other features/designs. I don’t think there are many bad cameras out there these days. The one thing to be wary of is if you shoot close up at f2 with the older versions of the 23mm, the images tend to be quite soft. They fixed that on the x100v.

Agreed with Liam ! Don’t sell the GR you’ll regret it. Hahaha trust me I’ve had the grii which I traded away and then eventually got the griii and traded that away for theX100V and I loved the V, BUT I LOVED that griii. Something is magical about that camera. If anything I’d recommend at least snagging a used grii after you grab the V. As Mattias Burling says and told me when I messaged him about the V vs GR debate “one must always have a GR”
@jonnnyhol20013 жыл бұрын
@@Holl.Mvrk. yeah I think I may do that. I had an XT-2 and sold that to buy the griii. May sound silly but I miss having a viewfinder and a tilt screen 😂. I think il follow your advice though and get a grii as well for when I want to be super stealthy haha
@Holl.Mvrk.3 жыл бұрын
@@jonnnyhol2001 that’s literally exactly why I sold the GRiii to get the V. I missed the viewfinder experience from my XT3, but then I began to miss the experience I had with the GR ! 🤣🤣🤣 dammit man ! But I actually just traded some film gear and my V and am getting an XT2 w/ 16-55f2.8 and an XH1 w/90f2. I’m thinking of selling the XT2 and grabbing a GRii since I don’t need two larger bodies. You have to take weather sealing with the grain of salt. Yes, that tech is great to have, but it's foolish to completely rely on it. Years back I've been forced to leave my camera (Canon 5DmkIII with the red ring lens, both allegedly weather sealed) in the rain, course I was stupid enough not to take any rain cover or at least a plastic bag despite the fact that I've checked the weather forecast which said - rain. Well, two weeks after that my camera developed corrosion under the bottom plate. Just saying...
@TheLiamGordon3 жыл бұрын
I didn't say I completely rely on it but if I'm going to get caught in the rain or dusty environment it's far better to have it. Sometimes it just comes down to bad luck. I've never had any rain-related issues with my Canon gear but I'm under no illusion that it couldn't happen one day.
