Thank you for the informative video and your opinion. I am shooting Leica M since the M9 and stopped upgrading when I got the M10R. With regards to aesthetics I get it, the charm of the M-D versions is one of a kind for a digital camera. But personally they are not for me and I agree they will find their buyers and keep their value. I find it odd to pay more for less but that is not the main reason why they are not for me. If you don't want to see the photo after the shot on a digital M just turn off the review function, but you have the option to turn it on anytime you need it and you have quicker access to the menu if needed. So you can turn any M into a D with the exception of the outside appearance and still have the optionality to access all the digital comfort. I bought an analogue M-P in black paint. I saved myself over 5000 Euros, which is well over 200 rolls of film plus development. To my eye this Leica looks even better than the M-Ds and is the real thing with regards to the analogue feeling. This is just my personal view and I wish all the M-D lovers out there a lot of joyful moments with their cameras and always good light.

@@btonellisure, the M10-D has the lever thumb rest and an all brass body, top and bottom plate. So it is even closer to the analog Leica M film cameras. Yes they only made 1,500 copies too.

I used to shoot film (in the days before digital). There is that exciting ‘anticipation’ when you get your film back from the developers, or when you develop it your self and print your images up. You lose than with digitals with their instant displays. I have an M10-D, and it does give me that same feeling of anticipation when you get back home and pop the memory card into the PC and examine all your shots from a photography session or trip. I like that aspect of the M10-D. I think it is a pity that they did not stick with the faux winder lever, I love it on the M10-D, it really does remind me of my old film cameras while also improving my grip on the body. I could never understand why it was controversial. Also pity that the M11-D is not a glossy black paint.

The D series has been pinnacle Leica to me. Definitely my dream cameras. There’s something incredibly special to not viewing your images right after taking. I started to notice this when I compared my M3 shots to my digital shots on various documentary shoots I did - the images on my M3 felt more complete and intentional and I always felt like the much fewer images on film still told the whole story. And in shooting film thru my M3 I have much more confidence that the image is “good to go” or “need another shot”. It’s really interesting and very ethereal. But the realest things in life often are ethereal. The only thing that could top a D camera for me is seeing it in Reporter colorway 😮‍💨

Good thing I am not having to worry about kids going to college! One of these has an emotional pull in a way a regular M11 has over a regular Mirrorless camera from Nikon, Sony or Canon. For me the M- series cameras are just nice objects to hold and even nicer cameras to use.

I'm an M10D owner, eagerly awaiting the arrival of my M11MD tomorrow. I fully agree with the idea that these cameras really let you stay in the moment. Once you lose the screen, you realize how much unnecessary stress it adds. My only wish is that they had made this version Monochrom and kept the pseudo film advance leve, it’s super useful when I'm using the VisoFlex for close focus under 0.7m.

I shoot with the Q2M and that has been a huge improvement in my overall performance. The next step in the journey is a M11DM if they would offer it. Remember what Allan Schiller said "Liberation through Limitations". It makes you slow down, think, and explore. This is not a camera for the run and gun or drive-by shooter crews that are out there.

Thank you for sharing your perspective about this beautiful camera. This philosophy in photography is plausible indeed. Old school shooters will love it. I shoot with M11P and not planning to purchase the D version, but I like the concept of focusing on the moment, full attention to what is going on, and shoot now - check later. On the negative side, and as a travel and street photography shooter, not being able the check the sharpness for example of the picture taken on spot is a disadvantage. There are places they might not get the chance to visit again.

I have been a M10-D user since it was first released, and I have loved it. Waiting for the M11-D to arrive:-) Agree - I would have preferred the thumb-lever to still be there. For me, some increased ISO performance over M10, some improved dynamic range, internal memory makes me want the M11-D. But honestly, I want the M11-D out of "I just want it..." , Affinity, love affair... guilty as charged! I love the experience of pure photography. I also have an SL2 which I also use a lot, but the love affair is with the M10-D. My wife tells me she is jealous - "I wish you would look at me the way you look at that camera.." :-)

Buying a Leica M11 because of its design and experience is definitely worth it. However, buying it just for the image quality is not worth it. There are several other cameras that have the same quality or better than Leica.

Buying a Leica is more about the overall experience, and some prefer the color science. Yes images can be edited but the colors out of camera are also very pleasing

@@btonelli The user experience of the design is the best on the market. The Fujifilm X100 and X-Pro are also beautiful. Regarding color science, it's a matter of personal taste. Most people like the color science of Canon, Fuji and Nikon too. The only one that people don't like is Sony. I love the colors of my Canon R6 Mark II. Even in Raw the colors come out beautiful.

I understand the appeal of returning to the "purity" of analog photography (I use film MP), the lack of display, the wait to see the results etc. etc. etc. But first of all I don't understand, why the "absence" of the display and its functions has to be paid almost 500 euros "more" than the Leica M11-P. . And above all, there are important settings which can be used quite frequently (for example, the selection between the three different sensor resolutions, the recognition of an old series lens which does not have the 6-bit coding, the type of exposure reading, the exposure correction and much more) which are usually adjusted quickly by acting on the display and the three buttons of the normal M11 and which instead here require connecting the camera each time via the App on a mobile phone or tablet, with the convenience and operational speed you can imagine. Well... it's absurd to me

Wide open it’s not sharp but it just has this vibe to it that draws you into the image. I think it’s precisely because of the drop in resolution wide open that it engages your imaginative faculties in a way that modern lenses that show you everything do not. :-). Hi Bobby, thanks for reviewing this camera! Do you know if you can attach the EVF and review all the images you have taken. I know you can use an EVF to take photos with this camera and I don’t think this is any way to review them unless you connect it with your phone which is not fast based on my prior experience with the Leica apps.

I already use my M11-P as a "D" Model. Just turn the screen off. But sometimes I want to shoot closeups with my Summilux 50 and Summicron 28 down to 0,4m. This is something you cannot do with a M11-D without a screen.

I don't really know if the M cameras leave you with "just the moment". For me, it is more fiddly with the manual focus, and it is hard to see the 28mm framelines with my glasses. The SL, on the other hand, can be set to allow for very intuitive operation.

The price is high from what I was told due to the limited production. For M11 more parts are massed produced which means lower cost, the D production is far less

So one gets the new M11D. Then with complete surprise one finds that the only way to format an SD card or the internal memory Leica says go do it on your PC. What! Yes, that is true. There was no provision for formatting any memory on the M11D even through the Foto app. How could even the beta testers let this pass? Heck, with all the other M11 variants one can format both memories (SD card and internal) with a menu selection. How could even imagine that Leica who wants to keep things simple with the M11D has just done the opposite by complicating a simple task of formatting memory. How do I feel? Let down again by Leica just when there should be a positive moment. I would have liked to have seen you comment on this during your review. Thanks for what you do.

I completely understand and to be forthright when I was testing the camera firmware wasn’t final. As I use internal storage for the testing to see how it would hold up I didn’t use an SD card. Also I never thought of this feature to be omitted like this which I’m sure is an oversight and will be corrected ASAP. It’s unfortunate and completely understand those that are disturbed by the omission.

I totally applaud the screen less Leica M digital cameras, they perform "like a" film camera that slows you down by focusing, pun accidentally introduced, on the subject not the screen but you have all the benefits of digital. My film camera is jealous...!

I can't get my around why in the world you can not plug in the the M11 series into your Mac and convert the photos from internal memory to your Mac/ laptop or computer. Especially since it's "made for iPhone". why not make "made for ease of use". Internal memory is basically a joke, you will have to carry sd cards. oh yeah and I hope they solved freezing issues, but at least the M11-D has no screen to freeze right? other than that it looks nice, even though I miss the design element of the iso dial on the left corner

Yes I understand. You can open the photos through dedicated apps but not a drive which I hope they rectify in the future. So far no freezing issue as there isn’t a screen so that’s a positive. Hope they rectify that as well.

this will be nicer if the ISO dial was in silver, and maybe the top and bottom plates, brass? guess many dont care and would rather have it lightweight? So it would be nice if it were titanium.

@@btonelli brass was a standard yrs ago, now it may become a luxury and a special edition. apple is now doing their watches and phones in titanium economically but yeah even if its not so much, Leica will charge a bunch for it.

@@ronitsingh85 various grades of titanium and these come at different prices. Also a watch prob uses less Titanium than a camera body. I’m not an engineer but based on size of product makes sense.

@@btonelli right, the Leica body would use 3-4 times as much as the iPhone but still it will not cost so much, what it is is majority do not care. Leica may release a few models in titanium like they did their noctilux 50 0.95 for $16k. Did it cost $6k extra because of the cost and machining of titanium, no. Now even if Leica goes and mass produces this noctilux from titanium and charges what it cost and then some, majority will not go for it since there is the alternative aluminum option that’s cheap and as good. Apple may in the near future forgo the titanium bodied phones because of cost and just make them from a stronger aluminum alloy as taste in good design and choice of material dwindles. What I am getting at is for a body that cost almost $10k, titanium or brass should be offered at least. Will aluminum or even plastic suffice, yes it would. Going this expensive, it boils down to the premium stuff it needs to be made out of.

You are in the moment and it is you... but then you need to manually set white balance. Ouch... M11-D does not allow you to. I might still get this camera because I have been wanting to, but we are missing "essentials" here

@@maheshg212 white balance is okay with the camera. Only once I needed to adjust but it was event lighting with three different light sources so that would throw any camera off.

Really? I can't buy into this hype. I have a 'cheaper' Leica & I love it. But I can turn the screen turned off when I want to. This whole thing sounds like the story of the Kings Clothes. But if people are happy paying more for less who am I to argue.

It’s the omission of the option that makes it unique. I get it, from a logical standpoint it doesn’t make sense but these cameras are designed to give you that almost compete analogue experience but without film. It’s different and only when you have it or use it does it make sense. Again this is a niche product, but it’s also become quite popular.

The whole point of this camera isn’t to edit it ‘right there and then’ but to be in the moment with more of the analogue film camera experience but with the benefit of digital files. Besides, the pics are sent to the mobile phone app and you can use any photo software on your phone to edit any time you like.

have handled it , an hour after release . I was waiting for it for 2 years . hated fake lever on 10d . very weird to no have iso dial on the left . terrible finish I hate it so bad it feels so plasticky comparing to silver Ms . although I can't afford shoot film its stupid ( post processing) . I adore m11p sapphire Chrystal - it's one of a kind - the transparency unparalleled . still I want to submerge into analog experience . I want no screen M . and 11d is way to go . gonna get it tomorrow . @georges_angeles
