Excellent discussion, Thorsten. I shoot single shot only and haven't noticed the lag yet. But this is very disconcerting I hope they can fix it in the firmware and, as you say, allow the electronic shutter to work even with flickering light. The M11 is my first new camera since I bought the M9-P in 2011. That camera has never let me down and is the epitome of simplicity and soul. We so appreciate you doing your own homework and explaining to us what is what. Many thanks!!

Single shots works fine. It's when you want to grab a fast one right after you loose the moment. It delays, or sometimes doesn't fire. And this behavior is different from EVF and RF use. You cold go L (slow continuous) but that is only fast enough with Electronic shutter and EVF, while with RF it slows down to 1fps. The more you use it, and the more decisive you are as to which settings to stay on, the better. Obviously, some of the choices they made is for future built-in EVF versions and as part of a roadmap to M11-R and M12.

@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Good afternoon Thorsten. I ran some test shots with the electric shutter only. In every case, the background looked like is was a wall covered with horizontal lines like blinds. When I shoot with the mechanical shutter, that issue disappears. Did you come across that issue? I had hoped that I could just swing over to E shutter but that's not going to work for me at all. Strangely, when the camera hands off to the E-shutter in a bright light scenario, I don't find those horizontal lines. Truly weird.

@@rogerwojahn That is the flickering I speak about in the video. Any artificial light can fundamentally create that. So in a hallway, office, hotel room, living room, the street at night, a store ... they all potentially have artificial light that flicker. Today I am in a sunny place, so electronic shutter is perfect. Tonight I will switch to mechanical if I want to take pictures with artificial light indoor or outdoor. Quite simple, except that once in a while you take pictures inside in daylight and you don't notice that there are LED lamps lighting up the place as well; and then you get stripes from the flickering light.

This is interesting evaluation of the M11. For someone who is new to the M series, coming from Fuji, I’m really confused now. It almost sounds as if you are saying the M10 R for now would be a better choice as it is simpler than the M11 or wait for the next version of the M11. For the new person to the ranger finder photography does it make sense to get the M10 R or the M11?

Very interesting explanation of electronic vs mechanical shutter « issue ». I don’t use my « M » , preferring my X100. And now I bought a Q2 which is a « Leica version » of the X100, without film simulations which I like on the Fuji. For films, I have several cameras (M7, asahi pentax) but we can’t find competent labs (photographs are retired…). Thank you for keeping photography passion alive 👍🙏

Film simulations for Fuji is a great idea, and that they are used also in Lightroom later if you didn't set them in camera or want to apply them to the JPG. I have some "Fuji film simulations for Leica Q2 and Leica Q" coming later in March on my website.

I have never owned a Leica, but I shot for 2 years with a Sony A7R4 and the high rez is great if you get it perfect. If you have challenging light or your technique is not perfect every little mistake gets magnified. I just went back to 24 megapixels in an A9 and A7C and on the whole I am much happier

Now we have a state-of-the art sensor system with an almost 70 year-old focus system. Which is okay at an aesthetic level, but there are practical limitations. With a lens like the 75 mm f/1.25 Summilux, the depth of field is REALLY shallow, and focusing errors car noticable with a 60 MP image. In this case, the old-fashioned rangefinder is the weak link (I speak from the experience of using a 90 mm f/2 summicron on an M3). The live view or EVF will get around this - provided you slow done to magnify the image to check focus. And one other thing: Leicas are very well built, but if you drop one too often, the rangefinder system can be knocked out of alignment - requiring an expensive trip to the repair shop!
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard 2 жыл бұрын
It;s nice to have both EVF and RF. I find the RF system quite precise enough for 75/1.4 and 75/1.25. Actually I find often that when using the EVF, you nail the focus 100%, but then something moves in the fairly ling delay from focusing to taking the photo. EVF is great for many things, and as a backup if the RF goes out of alignment. By the way, the best way to get the focus adjusted is to send it to Leica in Wetzlar directly yourself and not go via dealers and agents. Faster and cheaper. There are also 3rd part repair shops, but I've had a hard time finding one that does a precise job.

Very clear and comprehensive review of selected elements of the M11, especially the shutter choices and challenges. I agree that the M11 seems to be overly feature rich and more complex than it needs to be. Building simplicity that is functional and intuitive is very difficult. Adding complexity that compromises ease of use is a trap many tech providers fall into. Will be interesting to see how the M11-P addresses some of the challenges you highlight.

The decision to implement the metering off the sensor seems like a great idea until you realize what they had to do in order to achieve it by negatively affecting the way the mechanical shutter works (essentially making it live view mode all the time even if you're using the optical rangefinder)...i take that this also adds shutter lag when you are using mechanical shutter? also...did they address the shutter shock that plagued the M240 era? this would seem to exacerbate the issue here, no?

@@JJ_Photo Thing is that mechanical shutters become extremely rare in cameras, and in that light, making an M12 or M13 with a shutter, and preferable a 1/8000 or faster shutter ... it's going to be pricey. All sensors will go towards electronic shutter, so it will be easy to source those in comparison. Look at the Leica Q2 and Leica SL2 (and TL2) and you will get an idea where it is heading. I’m pretty sure that one will have a shutter and the same sensor as M11. I don’t like electronic shutter, so for me it’s fine with this solution. Never used the electronic shutter on my Pro3 and don’t miss it at my M10. I want to feel the camera work and wouldn’t use the electronic shutter as a main solution if the sensor don’t support global readout. Can’t see any reason to use the electronic shutter except if the light is to strong maybe. But with base ISO at 64 it should be ok with a shutter at 1/4000.

There is no time like the present, right? I could go back and get the 10-R or something prior that don't have some features that make the M11 better, or wait for the M11-R or 12 or skip to the 13 which may correct some things, but I'm getting the M11 now. I can use it now so that was a pretty simple decision. They will probably improve things in newer releases in a few years, and for all I know, they might change something that I like but the masses didn't like. I love 95% of what it can do, and for the rest I'll adapt and adjust to whatever they don't fix in firmware. Looking forward to your part 2 or beyond on the M11.

FW update for current M11 Mechanical shutter. With my M3 and MR4 meter I take occasional light readings and change my setting only when the light changes. I don't see why in full manual mode, the shutter can't be closed and operate as before i.e. Open/Close and have the ability to press a FN button to open the shutter and take a meter reading. Regarding the mis match between sound and number of shots. I wonder when in continuous mode the camera for the Fitst shot in the sequence performs a 3 way movement i.e. Close, Open, Close then reverts to normal mechanical open, close but if you hesitate even for a nano second within your shooting sequence you inadvertently re-trigger the start sequence and the camera once again does a three way followed by 2 way. Regarding future Global e-shutter, that would eliminate rolling shutter and increase dynamic range with variable ISO. I.e. the sensor will boost the shadow signal gain and lower for the sky using same logic as Multi Meter. Though I'm not sure how I would feel about that yet. (not the e-shutter but variable ISO, should be a good thing, I think!)

I couldn't agree with you more, man. The more Leica keeps things simple, the more they will always succeed. I understand the need to stay competitive with other digital manufacturers, but I honestly believe the most successful track is to stay true to the original concept. For the most part I shoot Leica M6 or M3 bodies. Mostly M6. If I do shoot digital I us Leica M262. The reason I went with 262 over the 240 is because it's an M. I didn't want live view or video. The 262 still provided that M approach, that simplicity. (all this being said, film is still better) Anyway, just wanted to share my 2 cents. I agree with you, man.

I made the jump from the M8 to the M240, because I can use my Leica R-lenses with it, and I've a lot of fun in doing so. The M240 is faster in handling, because you don't have to go into the menu to switch from single to continue exposer. That's why I'll keep my M240s. The sound of electronic shutter silence will not be a case for me to switch to the M11. The M240/M-P240 are less sophisticated and truly reliable even after many years of use. @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

In theory, any shutter speed divided with 60 should do the job (is the classic explanation), and anything below 1/60 should also do the job (as light flicker 1/50 - 1/250,000). But I find that flickering light comes in so many shapes and forms now that it is a problem for all electronic shutters. Sensor technology has to change to take that into account. It makes me think of slow exposure on iPhone where the camera in the phone "holds the photo still" for a second even your hand shake a bit. Maybe something in that direction for this problem. Nikon Z9 is getting there, so will others.

@@brianschwellinger7851 The RF mode and continuous shooting in L mode is incredible slow (1 fps). So you could change to Live View and not even use it (3 fps). What I did was I thought, "Wht the heck?" and changed to single mode ... and then stumbled into that it behaves really odd and with no predictable rhythm. As if the curtain stumbles over its own open and closure when you try to take a new photo while the shutter is in its process of open/close/open/close. This extremely slow fps of 1/sec will be fixed with firmware, and then likely the camera will be more predictable to use. Then next, using electronic shutter alone is a relief ... except if you shoot fast moving subjects. Bit of a dilemma because you have to change between LV/RF and Mechanical/Electronic and Single/Low Continuous for whatever you do. Too much camera thinking when your attention should be on the subject and street.

I tried the M10-R side by side with my M9-P and don‘t found that there‘s much improvement with the M10-R. Sure, the megapixels are fascinating the first time but I don‘t really need it. The bottom plate of the M10 series is a joke and useless compared to the M9. The access to the self timer on the M10 is just stupid. ISO noise with the M10R at 1600 is about the same as ISO 1000 on the M9, so absolutely no reason to upgrade. I don‘t have a M for liveview. AWB is better on the M8/M9. The screen design of the M10 looks somehow frankensteinig as it is too big. The thumb wheel of the M8/M9 is quicker to use than the back wheel of the 240 onwards. The lock on the ISOdial is more than stupid.

Very interesting review of the M11 so far. I'm sure Leica users will find the M11's shutter problems a real pain, particularly as the Fujifilm Xpro2 from way back, cracked the hybrid shutter very successfully and also the hybrid viewfinder. I user my Xpro2 in hybrid shutter mode which means most of the time the camera shoots with mechanical shutter and the sound the shutter makes is very concise and of course I can adjust the volume. Why is it that a leading manufacturer like Leica are not able to do the same. In my opinion, if Leica with the M11 are attempting to implement these new features then they needed to get it right before launch. Its must be embarrassing for Leica which is sad.

Another different approach from you, more European in the good sense, and always refreshing, even if I don´t agree with everything. I´m just 45 years old, and shooting since 14, but probably I will never get used to electronic shutter (only). I think the shutter and the sound it makes, is part of the shooting experience, is part of the process. Taking that out, it doesn´t give me the sense of a photograph. I know it´s weird, but the process is everything, other way is just another machine to take pictures, like the Z9, that you need to have that awful sound to simulate the shutter. What is that??? Technology is not always good. One reason that probably will never buy the M11, is that double sound from the shutter, as you explain so well, and do understand why you prefer to use mainly the electronic. Just bought another M-P 240 brand new for around 4000€ (best value for money), and that experience to shoot a Leica M is all there, with lovely colors from the sensor and the best auto WB I ever experienced... with the traditional shutter sound :)

maybe it should be mentioned that when you use the electronic shutter, the sensor readout time is 1/10s, meaning you have to have a VERY steady hand or shoot from the tripod. Otherwise you will experience lots of jello effects.

Yes, that is an issue that becomes visible when you shoot series of handheld photos: Each photo looks like it applies a different lens profile to correct the lines. They move a lot. Where do you have this 1/10 second readout time from?

Tricky situations. For me, it’s a deal breaker. I prefer my « M » 🤓 I can’t see any trivial solution to this electronic shutter optical limitation. That direction is a « cul de sac » (dead end). Unless using Artificial Intelligence and allow the camera to decide the shutter mode itself. This will require self learning by the camera and having multiple powerful processors. A long way to go.

Love your reviews 👍🏼 Build like a tank but not dust and weather resistant??? (like all Japanese camera’s are to date)… 8.350,- euro’s against 6.500,- for the M10 when it came out… Is this made for photographers or only for rich people? 8.350,- for camera with outdated digital shutter technologies. Maybe Leica can learn from Sony? I always love to use Leica but Wetzlar makes it more and more diffucult to justify the purchase. 😎

Leica M ara actually pretty resistant to weather, they just don't like to promise it. Never had an issue with rain, snow or anything, but I am fearless, I know I can always send it in for repair, or in worst case replace it with a new one. That probably helps (like trying to park being afraid to get scratches usually result in something bad). On prices, everything went up the last two years, and I guess that is one of the reasons for the price, and that they have saved money on the box and other things around the M11.

Thorsten, about that strange light metering behavior, cant get it out of my head. When using the mechanical shutter, wouldnt it make sense that the shutter opens when the camera is switched on,then when the shutter button is half depressed, the metering would lock and the shutter close. Then, when the button is fully depressed, it opens and closes at the set speed? And when on continuous, the metering for the next picture is done while the first picture is being exposed to the sensor? That is the only way that makes sense to me, but it seems the camera does it differently.

I think the ideal is that you don't even think about how it works, and doesn't wonder about it either. It just takes photos when you press the shutter.

I feel that with the M11 Leica has abandoned the 'raison d'etre' of M cameras and so will stick with the M10 (24mp) series (in addition to film M cameras). I do have a question: Do any of the M10 cameras NOT have a noticeable (2-3 seconds) start up delay from sleep mode? Very informative video . . . thank you.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard 2 жыл бұрын
The M11 for sure abandoned 'das wesentliche' (the essential and only the essential) with the many options and triple solutions available for the user to have to understand and decide on. On startup, if you use a fast SD-card it has shorter startup time. I start up my camera when I go out, and then leave it on as the automatic power off will make it goo to sleep after 2 minutes. Then when you touch the shutter release slightly, it's on in less than a second and ready. The M11 startup time is about 1.25 second with fast SD card (Anglbird 300MB/s) and perhaps 1.75 seconds with internal memory.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication".. And Overgaard exemplifies thqt in his assessment of equipment. But what's ironic is his best in class video intro featuring the high speed shutter belies his leanings toward simplicity. Can't help but love his understanding of how us Lieca affectionados think. At the same time his thinking influences ours.

I agree that the M11 is far too packed with tech, and has lost the level of simplicity I desire and have in the M10-P. It was my reason switching from dLSR to dM in the first place. It’s as if the M11 is a showcase of everything that can be packed into such a small body. I await the return to simplicity, perhaps with the M13 🤓 Not a fan of the electronic shutter myself at the moment, and I think I’d rather use an ND filter.

Thanks, but this is very confusing Thorsten. To take a picture you need to expose the sensor or the film a certain time. you can start closed open and closed. Or you can start open-closed-open. Why do you say that the shutter does an extra cycle? I don’t think so! What you think? With no live view or with film you have to open first the shutter first and the close it. With M11 which is always open you just need to do the opposite! And the sound is actually not different at the end with the exception of the opening when you switch on the camera. Also you say choice is not good but then you prove that is good with the things you like about it. Overall, it may sound different, but at the end is it? I understand the sensitivity i of losing the light meter, but that’s progress. Why do you need meters!
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard 2 жыл бұрын
The shutter is up to do the metering, that's the first click. When you end a shooting sequence, the shutter opens again (extra click). You can actually use the camera without ens and see how the shutter moves up and down, and at occasions doesn't.
@zenonkontolemis1232
@zenonkontolemis1232 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks again. The first click is when you switch on the camera and the shutter opens. The it closes and opens again to initial position. It’s reversed, no? Is this not the same as the SL2 etc? What is the problem? That it opens in the first instance for metering? Indeed, that’s a fundamental but rational difference. Look forward to your comment.

My friend let me use his M11 for couple weeks , honestly this is not the M camera I like as I told him . I prefer my M10 much more . I have m240 and then upgrade to M10 , I don’t think i really need that new M11 which is too modern digital /clinical /computerised and change the M system to different way including old simplicity culture that made Leica becomes famous . But that just my opinion ,

Same thoughts! M10-P is the best to stick with i my eyes. The M11 is no longer „Das Wesentliche“. Better buy an other lens and enjoy life with photography. Also the M11 cant fly and sail at the same time. Cheerz to all of you.

Sorry no, an add on to the top of the camera is not simplicity or beautiful. When its internal and can be hidden and not used if it unwanted is a much better and thoughtful design. I.e. whats in teh x100V. I understand you love Leica, but its ridiculous to say that about Fuji and then show an ugly black finder on top of a camera and say, better solution.

Leica lost its way with the M11. The soul of a M series camera should be an organic fluidity in use, where the camera disappears from the image making process. The M11 is a bit too much jewelry. It's too much feature creep for its own sake; it's engineering decisions made cowardly and for fashion. Well, maybe in the M12: global shutter sensor (no jello), electronic shutter only, drop the mechanical RF, replace with an EVF with focus peaking done right. Courage Leica. Courage!
