Leica Q3 Alternative? | Sony A7CR + Viltrox 28mm f/1.8 Review

While the new Leica Q3 seems to be amazing, it’s still backordered and $6000. The new Sony A7CR has seemingly the same 60mp sensor in a compact size so will it stack up against the Leica Q3 if I use the new Viltrox 28mm f/1.8?

Are there any objective tests out there compering Leica lenses to top of the line modern lenses, G Masters and the like? I've never been able to believe that this boutique camera company in Germany makes better lenses than ALL of these tech behemoths. Every time I see a Q2/Q3 put to the chart, it doesn't seem anything special, even disappointing. Yes, I know charts aren't everything, but I am strictly referring to technical excellence.

Thank you for the video. Definitely looking for a modern 28mm for my A7CR and A7CII. Concerned about there being no clicks on the Viltox’s aperture ring since all of my Sony G/GM and Sigma I-Series have them. I did buy a used Sony FE 28/2 and FE 55/1.8 ZA to try out as well though. Used to own the 55mm when I first shot Sony starting in 2013. Now Sony or Sigma or Viltrox need to come out with a new 28mm. The APS-C Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 Pro is really well made and I bought it. They are also coming out with a 27/1.2 Pro for APS-C so they know what it takes. Wish us all luck.

@@kistovisback Just look for Christopher Frost's review. This Viltrox outperforms the Leica Q lens by a HUGE margin. In terms of optical quality, ignoring everything else about experience.

If Sony put a 5.76 Mdot EVF they could have had a much stronger Q3 competitor. I'm still hoping we get an RX1R iii. :-)

this is a huge and not understandable gap on sony lineup. the 28 f2 is crap.. and have plenty of 35s and 50s a zooms, so i can't understand why they never developed a proper 28mm. i actually ordered my viltrox last week so it should be in my hands for testing very shortly, but i dont expect it to come any close to the summi on the Q3, that is absolutely amazing

If you look at Christopher Frost's reviews, the Viltrox actually outperforms the Q3. The Q lens is horribly flawed, a 26mm + crazy distortion. imo, Leica M bodies are super great, the Qs not too much.

The second you mentioned the aperture is declicked I lost interest in this lens, Benj. I don't understand the appeal of declicked apertures - I have worked over a decade in pro video and never had to alter the aperture during a take!

Rich people. The argument for shooting leica is the experience. In terms of tech, it does nothing better than a camera that's 1/4 of it's price

Not convinced with this lens. I would get the A7CR not top replace my Q3 (which I love) but to replace my FPL and then having the chance to gave other focal lengths available

I have the grip, as it came with the camera. I will say, the grip portion is nice, as it matches the leatherette finish of the camera. The shape is odd though. As well as them just adding a tripod mounting screw instead of an arca swiss shaped base to begin with is a miss. Like Benj, I purchase a smallrig baseplate. The uniform shape, built-in arca swiss and color were a big upgrade in my opinion.

Seriously I think the Fujifilm X-T5 is a better buy. Only knock for some is that’s it’s APSC. But 40 MP, dual card slot, better EVF and screen plus you can shoot 6K with it. Plus the lens are smaller. I have the A7RV and the X-T5 for me is a smaller version of that camera. Plus it looks great.

For Sony E-mount there are 8 28mm, one 30mm, 14 24mm, two 25mm, two 23mm and 34 35mm Lenses. I do not like the 28mm focal length, for me it nearly always either feels too short or too long, so I would use either a 24/25mm or a 35mm focal length, To me a Sony A7RIV Camera are much better than a "gucci"-Leica.
