I feel like a lot of people are going to be wondering the same thing: Why is Leigh just NOW agreeing with Jesy being problematic? First, Leigh is very vocal about issues that are effecting POC in the entertainment industry and she has been for a while. Second, for a while now it’s believed that if Leigh was able to hold her fiancé accountable for his problematic tweets form several years ago, surely she’d do the same with her bandmate: Jesy Nelson. I don’t think it’s fair to call Leigh an enabler. She was very anxious to speak up about her awful experiences in the early days of Little Mix. Last year, she uploaded a video on Instagram where she teared up about feeling “invisible” as “the only Black member of Little Mix.” Her comments included “various artists” who like to use aesthetics that are clearly influencing by black culture. Around the time that Leigh started speaking up on racism in the industry, Jesy became a bit distant in certain interviews. Granted, we can chalk that up to her mental health or anxiety. But again, if Leigh held her FIANCÉ accountable, I imagine it took a lot to confront her friend… and it probably wasn’t easy, as Leigh was aware that Jesy usually didn’t take criticism well. In the Sweet Melody music video, Jesy was noticeably darker than both Leigh and Jade. For all we know, there might’ve been another confrontation. Jesy probably felt attacked and this spiraled into something drastic (and pertaining to her mental health). And even if it wasn’t Leigh who tried to talk to her about this, Little Mix works with several songwriters, choreographers, directors, and producers who are part of the BIPOC community-for all we know, one or many of them probably tried to talk to Jesy about how she was choosing to present herself. What we DO know is that Jesy’s recent music video was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back. Leigh might’ve had enough at this point and she’s not holding back. It’s very clear that she doesn’t agree with what Jesy is doing and we can only imagine what the tension was like during her time in the group.

Jesy hasn’t always been trying to fit this image though. The more obsessed with her image she’s gotten the more racially ambiguous she’s trying to look. She seems really into American style and the style she’s trying to look like to me is a style just not meant to be worn like cosplay. She dressed like girls I know and women I know who get called ghetto and would get followed around in a store for wearing but Jesy is black fishing online , but walking around with lighter skin than she’s portraying online . Jesy has self image issues and it’s obvious , her mom even admitted jesy is obsessed with social media and her image , her debut solo single is about liking Bad boys …… who would only contribute to her low self worth and esteem . She finds the whole culture and racially ambiguous thing as like a costume , she’s able to wipe away that tan and go back to being her real skin color , the people I know who get called ghetto and ratchet or followed in stores can’t just wipe their skin color away

A lot of white women don't try to look "racially ambiguous", they just try to look good however they thing they look good. There are some white women that tries to have a lighter skin than what it already is and some white women that tries to have a darker skin. It's like dyeing your hair. You can dye it to blond, to black, to brown, to ginger, to purple, to blue, to red, etc. And there's nothing wrong with it, right? Then why attacking people for trying to have a bit different colour skin? Cause it's for the appearence/beauty, not for trying to be part of another race. In Corea, for example, the beauty standard is being extremely white and a lot of people (and the majority of the celebrities) use makeup that makes their skin look quite more lighter. And white people is not like "They are trying to be like the white race, let's cancel them". It's just a different beauty standard and nowadays everyone is free (or should be free) of looking however they want. In Spain the beauty standard is to have a little darker skin because seems like you have been on the beach. So? What's the problem? Cmon, not everything is about race, sometimes is just appearence/beauty. And, as I said before, let people be how they want. They are free. And they aren't doing anything wrong. :) ♡

@@irenejover4316 i think saying white women don’t try to look racially ambiguous is a stretch but in almost every clothes store the model looks like some type of mixed race of something mixed with black. the curly hair, the big lips the tan skin. even the fashion choices we can’t just sit here and act like each race doesn’t have their own culture bc when you think of certain fashion styles like street wear and even “y2k” those all started with black people in the 90’s and early 2000’s. saying that is almost ignoring the fact that black people have had their culture taken from many times and it seems like when people deny that they know it’s true but want to act like that isn’t a problem when it is. imagine creating and entire culture, the music, the hairstyles, the clothing, the mannerisms, the accessories, will never be accepted on you, but someone who isn’t black, for example, mexicans, whites, even asians at times try to imitate that exact style and they get called “the new wave of fashion” or “fashion icon” but you made that style. except when you wear it, you’re dirty, you’re ghetto, you’re ratchet, unprofessional. it’s not fair and i think because you ignore that exact fact it makes you no different than someone who pushes the narrative that everything is for everyone when it isn’t. it’s ok to look at someone else’s culture and appreciate what you’re seeing but that doesn’t mean you go out and try and do everything they do when you were never even brought up in it. it’s a joke to black ppl to see everyone else use what we created and do it incorrectly and make an entire living off of something that were told is not enough and never will be on us, but on everyone else they will strive.

also, if you aren’t white, or white passing everything is based upon your race. you won’t get a job if your name sounds “too black/ethnic”, you get followed in the store because people believe that for some reason every person of COLOR is stealing, or does crimes constantly, people will judge you off of your race before you even open your mouth. people of color are more likely to be accused of things they didn’t do solely based off of their race. to you it may sound shocking because you’re probably white or white passing and you’ve never had to deal with someone treating you like you’re something else other than a human because the world is in your favor, but for people of color it isn’t. even if it sounds like it isn’t so bad that’s only a small portion of a giant cake. i’m not trying to be hateful or anything but maybe look into what people of color go through before you speak on their behalf as someone who may only get tan during the summer because black ppl and poc have it all year round 24/7 it’s not something we get praises for or complimented because we spent our time on the beach for summer vacation.

I feel like saying that there’s advantages in looking racially ambiguous but being from a racially ambiguous culture is then seen as negative in the industry does not quite add up. Maybe there is a better way of saying it because the way it been said sounds contradictory. I’m not sure we should be calling people out for tanning if we still be using weave and relaxer to look less Afro. Are we now not dressing in a way to benefit from being more European looking ? 🤷🏽♀️ (there me quoting Lauryn hill 😅)
@NotAnotherKuromi3 жыл бұрын
I think that a lot of the white people who change their look to be more racially ambiguous have not personally experienced all the negativity that comes with being born not white. I'd be interested to see the experiences of none famous people who do this & how those interactions affect them. I agree with your point about using relaxers & weaves, or other things from different cultures, it is a double standard. Also I don't know how to say this delicately but I think a lot of people get race confused with culture. A lot of more common poorer areas tend to have a certian look which is often more superficial & "extra." People tend to relate this to being black but ignore Cholos/Cholas, Chavs & other cultural groups which are not created by or mainly black group. This also goes the other way where people are told they aren't black enough, or are white, or an Oreo, just because they aren't some steryotype the person has in their mind. Bernie even said you weren't black if you didn't vote a certian way! I really think more nuance needs to be added to conversations about race.

THE ENTIRE BOYZ VIDEO IS SO DISRESPECTFUL TO BLACK CULTURE AND SHE USED 2 BLACK ARTISTS TO PACIFY IT. JESSY WILL DO ANYTHING TO BE RELEVANT AND SELL HER CRAPPY MUSIC. JUST LEAVE OUR CULTURE OUT OF IT. DON'T TOUCH OUR CULTURE.

I do not see a problem with blackfishing. There is as much problems as blackfishing, as there are being spiritual and loving Christ.

Why on earth are you comparing blackfishing and the issues black people go through to Christianity. there is a MASSIVE problem with blackfishing because black people were and are being ridiculed because of how dark our skin colour is. But when a white woman looks the same as another black woman and nothing gets said and that she doesn’t get treated as a black woman in todays society, that’s a problem

The moment you bring up religion in any argument, you already lost. The thing you just said is a red flag. And do you really think there is no problem with blackfishing? 🤦♀️ Can’t believe how small you brain is. Research some facts instead of voicing out your ignorance.

@@nobody7349 I take things on the chest, and display honesty and i also do research and look at peoples perspectives on topics, i do not go above and beyond what is laid out infront of me. You want me to do that, but i do not. You need to pay attention to the context of my message. You are also being ignorant of what i said, by not acknowledging the power of faith, which everyone uses including you.

@@stars9442 Not true. But in the context of blackfishing and the context of Christianity in human perception and ideals are one and the same in a typical way. That is racism to say that a white woman is white and should act white, i see nothing wrong with modifying the identity to be more urban. Only racist people take offensive at black fishing, naturally, imitation is the best form of flattery.

There's a difference between colorism and racism. What jesy doing is racism
