Quick edit: Man that dig on 3985 in the defect category was so low man lol (but not untrue sadly). theres also a joke on the talyllyn that on the early days the track gauge was so freaking wonky because it was poorly maintained, that gauge was 2 foot, 3 inches and one thumb

"Attack of the West Texas Drawbar results in losing entire train." For anyone who doesn't know, this refers to an incident with the 4449 when she was running to Railfair '84. While traveling at speed through western Texas, the drawbar retention plate worked itself lose. This retention plate holds in a drawbar pin, which allows the drawbar to connect the tender to the locomotive. Without the retention plate, the pin also worked lose and fell out, causing the train to go into emergency and 4449 to go speeding off with neither train nor tender. Because 4449 has an enclosed back cab (Oil burner, no need to shovel coal.), the only thing the crew in the cab felt was a bump and a sudden acceleration. 4449 has rearview mirrors because of its enclosed cab, and Mr. Doyle McCormack looked through these and spotted the tender and train disconnected. He stopped 4449, the crew went out to figure out what the heck happened, and they recovered the dropped parts. They put engine and tender back together, reconnected the oil and water lines, and continued as if nothing had happened. Now they pay extra attention to these pieces whenever they run 4449. Before this, they almost never thought about them, because how often do you need to separate a loco and tender? If anyone doubts this, there are photos of a tenderless 4449 in the middle of vast, empty west Texas. Look them up.

Who was best? Bev, without a shadow of a doubt! Runner up: Whoever made that new intro, that was nostalgia in a new wrapping! Third: Goose! Fourth: Leighton, a railroads knowledge gent. Fifth: The disembodied voice in the background, that I'm guessing is Leighton's fiancée, for forcing Hyce to add so many sound effects in such a short time! Sixth: Brett, for winning. Seventh: Hyce, for the bewildered reactions and screams, scaring poor Bev. Do I want to see more? Doesn't the comment length qualify as a yes, I don't know what else to do! What a wonderful group of railroad geeks you are part of Hyce, absolutely brilliant people!

The Little Joes went to the Milwaukee Road and the South Shore Line as they were the only railroads that had a large enough loading gauge and used DC electrification. The name Little Joe references Joseph Stalin, and one of the SSL Little Joe's is operational at the IRM, and was seen on July 1st of this year towing a GG1 and an AEM-7.

The Talyllyn Railway was 2’3 and 1/2” gauge from around 1865/66 until the 1960’s because Talyllyn’s rigid wheelbase after a rebuild in 1865 to add a trailing axle, was too long for the proper 2’3” gauge and they figured widening the gauge by half an inch would fix it. And it did… until 1952 when #’s 3 and 4 arrived and #3 kept falling between the rails on switches. They regauged to proper 2’3” gauge after Talyllyn was rebuilt to have a pivoting trailing wheel in the 1960’s or 1970’s.
@OliverSallis Жыл бұрын
That is the most British solution to a problem that should not have existed I have ever heard.
@MachRacer4 Жыл бұрын
@@OliverSallis it is however, the truth. When Talyllyn was given the trailing axle in 1865 the builders of Talyllyn; Fletcher, Jennings & Co, simply mounted Talyllyn’s trailing axle right to the frame with no way for it to pivot, so the whole railway ended up needing the track gauge being widened by 1/2” to allow for Talyllyn to negotiate curves and switches without derailing.

And the cool thing about this welder in particular is that instead of needing a big oxygen tank, it includes like 2 pounds of solid oxygen pellets, and you literally put one in this canister, then set it on fire, which releases the oxygen this welder needs. It's absolutely bizarre, but it's so cool at the same time.
