Leisure Battery WARNING - I COULD HAVE DIED! --- Hydrogen Sulphide

This nearly had me! One of those things you could never know, it's crazy how this could catch you out. I was slowly being poisoned over a few days, felt dizzy, had a dry throat and wasn't really with it. Then the levels increased which could have resulted in one of 2 things...thankfully this time, it resulted in me vacating the caravan and then finding out what was really happening!

Same happened me changing motorcycle battery down in garage I thought farmer was spreading slurry . Every room in house was reaking till I got closer too smell and turned off battery charger . Never new it could happen .

August 8, 2023, my husband was driving our Ford C-max Energi when the battery over-heated and off-gassed hydrogen sulfide into the interior. He only had time to pull to the side of the road with his foot pressed on the brake pedal before going unconscious and dying while slumped over the steering wheel. No one deserves to die like that. There was no automatic shutdown of the vehicle and no warning lights. The day before, I had smelled something like rotisserie chicken when I drove the car. I thought it was a dead mouse getting fried while I was driving. The next day, when the smell became more like rotten eggs, my daughter and husband assumed that the "dead mouse" was decomposing. They had no idea it was the battery and how dangerous the situation was. My husband dropped my daughter off at the motor vehicle department to get her driver's license. They were both coughing when they got there. My husband then went to get gas, and while he was driving back, the gas overtook him. People need to know this. I had never even heard of something like this happening until it killed my husband.

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Thank you. Maybe after our lawsuit against Ford there will be. I hope it gets a lot of coverage. It took almost 6 months to get the toxicology results back confirming cause of death by inhalation of hydrogen sulfide gas.

Is there a hydrogen sulphide detector/alarm similar to carbon monoxide? I would say the battery compartment should really be vented outside and the holes into the caravan sealed 100% against gas ingress. Manufacturing/design issue maybe. Good job you are a nosy person....a lot of people might have bought an air freshener instead. Big trouble for me as my natural aroma is rotten eggs!!! Glad you are safe. Don't know how I missed this video last year. Merry Christmas

You need to change your diet 😂 the best detector is your nose for this! But if you don't know what that smell means then you don't know its killing you 😬 you sparked a curiosity though, I done a Google search. There are detectors that exist (seems they can detect 4 different gases including natural gas from tanks ) but not actual alarms. There's a business idea hey, especially with all these van lifers 🤔

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT So it's a race to the patent office is it?! I would worry about false alarms...especially after a curry! People are doing all sorts of daft things to keep themselves warm. All sorts of internet crazes at the moment....some bloke set fire to his flat after building a heater out of flower pots & tea lights. Carbon monoxide is the big killer. But as we move towards battery power to store our power that introduces new potential problems e.g. lithium batteries exploding etc. Opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Thanks for this video; I have just found the same problem on our caravan. It was fine yesterday, but after charging overnight the battery was extremely hot and there was an accompanying bad drains/rotten eggs smell. (Thankfully we were not in the 'van!) The question is why has this happened? Did you discover whether it was a charger problem or that the battery itself developed a fault? Any other info would be much appreciated.

One of my leisure batteries just exploded!!!! Hence why I’m watching this… It was seriously loud😮 I did notice an eggy smell earlier coming from the engine, now I know why 😂

I cooked eggs in my RV today, and the smell of eggs wouldn't go away all day. I turned off the AC and heard a simmering leaky sound coming from my battery pack. The battery was too hot to touch, and the smell was even stronger next to it... Man I just bought this RV 😅

I didn't put a new one in as I just ran it off the mains. This only happens if you have a bad cell so I should think a new battery would be fine. I'll get a new battery when I sell it

The same thing has happened to me and my wife we are both in are 60,s a bad smell was in the van and we could hear a bubbling nose coming from under my seat we both had dry throats ,We checked the battery it was bubbling and vary hot ,I took the live lead of and we are looking for a new battery now It was a close call for us both july 2022

Nope, my sore throat got better after a couple of weeks and I stopped getting light headed within a couple of days
