You know what kills me? Why WASN'T this animated? The few portions that are are gorgeous and fit the tone of the comic way more. With a better script, I think this could have become a really good animated film.

For those wondering, yes, the comics are alot like this. But the thing is, in the comics it works, because in the comics they pretty much disregard physics, logic, character development or even conventional storytelling, and most issues are basically standalone stories. They just focus on having a batshit insane fun time with the current story, it's kinda like a punk version of Space Dandy. But when you want to adapt something to a feature film, it kinda needs an overarching storyline or character development, so a film adaptation of Tank Girl was pretty much doomed from the start. Maybe it would have worked better as a TV series or an adult cartoon, with individual storylines in each episode, but if you try to give Tank Girl an overarching storyline, you don't understand the appeal of Tank Girl. Oh and just FYI, even the original creator of Tank Girl hated this movie.

Read the wiki on this, this is what Roger Ebert has to say: "Whatever the faults of Tank Girl, lack of ambition is not one of them. Here is a movie that dives into the bag of filmmaking tricks and chooses all of them. Trying to re-create the multimedia effect of the comic books it's based on, the film employs live action, animation, montages of still graphics, animatronic makeup, prosthetics, song-and-dance routines, scale models, fake backdrops, holography, title cards, matte drawings, and computerized special effects. All I really missed were 3-D and Smell-O-Vision." Now this isn't a good movie, but this excerpt reminds me of something... Watch Doug's review of the AVGN movie in which he praises that film for the very same points Ebert has made here. Not hating in any sense, just thought it was interesting.

ok, if NC really did his research on this movie, he would know that the original cut was about 35 mins longer, the studio cut and trimmed almost every scene, therefore cutting major jokes and the remaining parts of scenes that actually made the movie flow a lot better, believe it or not, the original cut for this movie was LOVED by test audiences, but the studio that WANTED to make this movie because it was so bizarre, they ended up CUTTING out a lot of it, BECAUSE it was so bizarre. WTF Hollywood? and also, the comic strips that are inter-cut in the movie was because the studio pulled bitch on them in the middle of production and took away part of their budget, so they ended up having to use the comics to explain some of the action scenes, because they had the money taken away that they were going to use to shoot them. come on NC, do your research, yeah make fun of it of course, but know what you are insulting first dude. there is no excuse ( cinema snob, obscurus lupa, nostalgia chick and even blockbuster buster ) do their research before they watch and riff on the stuff they review. and don't get me wrong, I love NC, he got me into TGWTG site, but honestly after seeing other reviewers on the site, his reviews just aren't as good imo, but different strokes. he is still funny though.

I think its a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. However overall I admire what this movie attempted for comic book movies. It tried to break the monotonous formula that had consumed comic movies up til that point. Especially today all you'll find from comic book movies is either they take themselves way too seriously or they're too goofy. I think this is the only comic book movie I've ever seen where I can safely say "there isn't another one like it" and for that, I think it holds up better. Just make sure Hollywood doesn't screw over a Hack/Slash adaptation and I'll be happy.

I hate how he is all 'Ew, this was directed by a woman! A man is taking off all his clothes! no!" but when the girl takes off her clothes, and when 2 women kiss, he's totally cool with it, not a problem, in fact it's great! I can't tell if Doug wrote that in for comedy or if he's actually like that cos I know he's not sexist.
@NyQuilDonut11 жыл бұрын
Well he IS a straight man after all.. Of course he's gonna be disgusted by a man undressing and totally fine with a woman undressing. You make it sound like he had a problem with the movie being directed by a woman when all he really said was, "Ahh sick a guy getting naked.. Did I mention this movie was directed by a woman?" paraphrasing of course but that's basically what he said. That is by no means a sexist statement about female directors, just pointing out that a man getting naked in a movie was probably due to a woman directing it. It's unusual to see a man getting undressed in a movie like a girl might so it's worth him pointing it out. He also never said or even implied that the movie was made worse because a man was getting undressed instead of a woman. Just that he didn't like it because he's a straight guy. Please don't be one of those girls that look for sexism everywhere they go.
@briizyleaves11 жыл бұрын
Did I ever say that he implied the movie was worse because it was directed by a woman? No, I didn't. I'm just saying that he had to point it out. It doesn't matter if he's a straight man. The gist I'm getting is it's weird to sexualize a man. But, it's *awesome* and *arousing* to over-sexualize women. That's messed up. Again, I think he just put it in for comedy and I don't think he's really sexist.

He never said "Ew this was directed by a woman" or anything negative like that about female directors, he was more grossed out by the fact that a guy was getting naked because he's straight, he's not into that kind of thing. Ok, I might be the only one who actually liked Tank Girl. It's wacky, its goofy, but not stupid B-movie screwy. Ok yes you can see the wires, buts its still good. Shes the perfect fantasy for women. Shes the anti-just shut up and be a nice lady-girl. Any girl who just feels constricted by femininity gets to escape in this character, thats the appeal. Shes openly everything its NOT okay for women to be but still are sometimes to our own societal peril. Sloppy, mean, sexually agressive, bad at fashion, gross and loud. In real life when women are any of these things its the end of the fucking world, when guys are these things theyre just being guys, douchey guys but still socially acceptable guys. Tank-girl is a hero for girls like superman is for boys. No guy is going to be able to fly in and save lois lane but they still love superman because they get to be god. Hes everything impossible. Well i dont give a shit about superman yet, im still fantasizing about being okay just being a fucking human being without being crucified for it. Tank girl is MY superman. Well, reading the comic, the trait that I found admirable about Tank Girl is the fact that she has not a single fragile quality (and thus, supposed to be a sad, insecure woman), yet she just has no fucks to give. She is free from the need to be approved by others - and yes, that IS empowering. To truly not care about what others think - this quality is bad ass no matter the sex of the one who embodies it. And you gotta admit, there aren't many female examples that take it to such extremes as Tank Girl did. That being said I don't think Superman is the right parallel here. I think Boogie is (another semi-nihilistic bad-ass from a comic strip, and a movie from 2009), as well as some characters from Sin City, but no, Superman is from a different category - Superman's story revolves around being good and doing right. There is not one non-archetypical hair on his manly head. Tank Girl is the opposite of that.

The movie was never going to be good. Hewlett and Martin have talked about this a lot. They tried to turn in a script that was more or less true to the comics, but Hollywood was having none of it. The result is a mess because, what else would it be?

I have watched this movie twice and found it fun. I liked it. Not in the same way i'd like a good movie, no, it's anything but what you'd call good. But a kind of fun nonetheless, and it's certainly unique.

The Comic is not created by "one of the people who worked on Gorillaz" Its made by Jamie Hewlett THE ONE person who created the characters of the band Gorillaz. And knowing this guy and his comics, the movie kinda captured the essence of it. Not perfectly but that is almost impossible. I don't think that those comics were supposed to be serious, deep and make a lot of sense. Alot in this movie is senceless annoying weirdness. But thats what it was supposed to be. Yes it was probably not the best idea to randomly put drawings into the movie. Scott Pilgrim merged those together way better. But I can forgive that. It has its trashy charm to it and it has its very own style thats why I would not "hate" it. Its not a really good movie but its still GOD compared to the Last Airbender movie-abomination.

Gorillaz's core creators are Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. They just got musicians for their live sessions and recordings.

EpicRageGamer16 Definitely, the plot itself isn't that bad, it's just the execution was dogshit. I would definitely pay to see an animated Tank Girl movie.

Yes. so he was ONE of the people involved in Gorillaz. That statement is correct. There are other people involved ie Damon Albarn, as animation is part of the bigger project which is A MUSICAL BAND

actually, I'm a huge fan of the comics and collect them for a while. And I think the movie was quiet okay - just try to make sense of the whole Tank Girl universe and put it in ONE Movie. That's not working out. They made up a pretty good job. The only thing I was desperately hoping for was barney. But you can't have all, can you?

I remember as a kid I was at my cousin's house, they rented this out, all I remember though was the 1st 5 min, then I fell asleep, woke up with the machine guns on the truck scene thought that was cool then fell back asleep. Honestly the main thing I remember about watching this movie is that I had a great sleep.

I have a question about 17:30-17:32, how can a hologram be disoriented and in pain? Especially when a few seconds earlier,in one of the scenes, the villain showed his head was just a hologram. I like the movie, somewhat. But that part didn't make sense to me.

Tank Girl would have been far better of if they just did it as animated movie. The black humor of the comic just doesn't lend itself to live action. Movie sucked big time but the soundtrack has some pretty good songs on it.

I happen to like this movie. It's campy yes but then for a post apocalyptic movie not everything is going to rugged leather and shit kicker boots. You use what you can find, ie the opening scene with the yak. And the cut scenes with the comic I think was brilliant. it ties it into the comics themselves a lot more than just trying to explain stuff. So excuse me, for loving this movie. My favorite was the kangeroo people. that was just freaking hilarious.

Nostalgia Critic, Ok, to **here** and now stopping.. for a thought.. are you serious? I've just reached this video now (watching the whole NC library chronologically), and this is the only instance where I think you miss judged the movie.. or the concept.. The original comic, the source material, is "not" really "THAT" movie material! It’s kinda like fun and "cartoony"! Kinda reminds me of the late 80s/early 90s Anime movie Dominion Tank Police! It is very suitable for an Animation adaptation! : ) But to push it to a real life action, you should be a little forgiving! The music number, the comic cut outs, and all the "unusual" elements found in this Tank Girl movie suits the very material it is based on.. I don't really know how to explain it.. not to mention English is not my even third language..

I hate to say it, but I like this movie, though it does a huge disservice to the comic.
@NoodleWilll10 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I don't think it would be possible to do a really good tank girl movie that does the comics justice. One of the brilliant things about the comics is how chaotic and anarchistic they are. The plot lines are ridiculous - but that's what makes them so great. Translating such a thing onto film seems impossible to me - it's trying to give order to something where there is no order, if that makes sense?
@TheEvanRoweShow10 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I heard somewhere that Jamie Hewlett had plans for an animated series. Now That would be good!

"She's just a girl...she's just a girl...a girl you want". Who? Who would want this girl? She's the most annoying girl/woman/whatever that was ever put on screen. What the hell was that accent, anyway? "Annoying-cliched-Brooklyn"? She has no appeal whatsoever. You know it's bad when seeing her kiss another girl does nothing for you.
