Hi Everyone, I used the Black Diamond Carbon Z's in my UTMB TDS adventure last year (still can't believe I get to say that!) Safe to say, without them I doubt I would have finished - one of my biggest take-always was that practicing descending is vital! Just as important as practicing uphill! I also found getting out and using them before the race really helpful too, because I learnt how they affected the rhythm of my breathing & how I needed to adjust accordingly. Keep it up Peeps! :)

Leki. Oh, spring has sprung here. Thursday night a tornado touched down one town over from me. The temp had risen to 72 yesterday. Storms predicted for Sunday & Monday. Praying it, won't be too bad. God bless.

After doing some research, I got these today. I'll use them for the first time, running through the mountains where I live, tomorrow morning. Thanks for the review, I was having trouble understanding the gloves.

I like to use poles some time when im snow showing, it really helps. And also im really big into backpacking. When you're carrying an 80-pound pack, A hiking stick or poles work awesome. But no I've never ran with poles. But I do watch a lot of ultrathon videos, and they definitely come in handy. Like the Moab 240, and Bigfoot 200. And the race you were talking about I watch videos on that too, huge climbs. Good Vlog Seth.

personally prefer my black diamond distance carbon z poles. but i really do love poles. they truly do make a difference. id go the other way and say train with the poles so that you can get used to the weight and the rhythm. used mine for a big shot up the lake echo trail last summer and i use them all the time around the local mountains in Shenandoah. when i start prepping for the silverton ultra (37 miles with 10k of climbing) ill be using them everyday. for now theyre relegated to just recovery hikes with friends or the occasional mountain excursion away from the road and track

I purchased an adjustable version of your Leki's for the Run Rabbit Run 100 this September...I'm slow, and entered as a tortoise, so I'll be using mine...love them

Leki poles are great, picked up a fixed alpine pair for snowshoeing and winter running with spikes. Also like the MSR poles.🏃‍♂️🇨🇦

Have some leki antishock poles that I've used for hiking for years, used on the West Highland Way 7 times :) but since I started running I've been using Black Diamond z poles carbon distance, mostly used for walking fast up steep ascent.

Never used poles (I'm also still in high school and I don't know what races I'd be doing that I'd need those) but if I ever get into ultra running later in my life I'll be sure to check them out

LEKI - Oh man I was going to record something on these for the show as well... darn it. I use these poles! They are really good, as you know I started with these and more ultrarunning last year trying to get a 50 miler in. I know we only have a small sample size of the footage you show here but there is a little form noe I have to make with these poles and the trigger shark mechanism, because of that loop these poles allow you to be able to release your grip when running. As you run past your plant release your hand and swing it forward (the base is weighted so it does this quite easily the plan should be a a foot or two in front of you. In some of you shots you are really just stabbing down and not getting the full use of the pole. I would also say that in order to get the best benefit from poles you do need to practice with them but not every run, use them on longer trail runs if you plan to use them at all. The can also help on tricky descents - that is until you fall and shatter it under you like I did in a race in Ireland in December...

Leki! QD: I love my Black diamond carb fiber poles, I use them for hiking because they save the knees on the downhill! They've also saved me from a fall or two :)

Poles aren't in the mandatory kit list for UTMB. They're just used by a lot of the runners there. But if you start with them then you have to carry them the whole way! Also it's 170km (~100miles). Anyways just a couple small corrections, keep up the good work Seth 👍

...but I just attempted my first 50k with no pole training. Then I used poles in the race. My back muscles were so full of lactic for about 3 days!!! So use poles for at least 3 to 5 training runs imo

Great review. If I was in the market for some poles I’d definitely look at Lekis. I’m currently using Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles and have been really happy with them. Thanks for pointing out that some races don’t allow them... that not necessarily something you would think about.

I think the opposite: If you use poles in your races, train with them. I use poles in most of my training above 10miles. I just got lekis with trigger shark system. Needs getting used to. But love them. it’s LE -KEEE. Its an acronym for Lenhart (the name of the founder) and KI (Kirchheim - the village the company is from, in Germany)

I wouldnt say they are only for 50+ mile races. It all depends on the climbs. The races I'm signed up for this year all have long climbs with grades from 20-30+% so you're not really running those (unless your name is Kilian). And on those steep climbs the poles help to keep your legs fresher for the descent.

This is very interesting. I'm not a trail runner, so I don't know much about the gear. Getting ready to watch Tokyo marathon this morning. I'm calling it now, 1st place will be Dickson Chumba, 2nd Suguru Osako. 3rd place... no idea.

Hey Seth. I use Mountain King Trail Blaze poles; super-duper light and weigh less than appx. 250 grams a pair (lighter than most carbon sets). I only use on long runs that have long, steady uphills or descents but rarely on any of my usual, technical mountain runs as then they just become a hindrance. Generally use them in ultras so the legs can be saved a little ;) > The Leki poles however, are a superb set of poles :)

Are they also suitable to use them with backpack day trekking (walking) to push weight on it or are they not strong enough for that kind of sport? Because I like the glove handles. Normal trekking poles don't have that option.

Have you found leki poles are too skinny to be stored in some vests? I heard the are too skinny to fit in the BD distance 4 carrying system.
