Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) recieves Jane's letters talking about Lydia's elopement with Wikham and gets desperate. Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) arrives just in time, but he can do nothing... One of the best sequences from 1995's BBC adaptation os Pride & Prejudice.

Yes but during that time period Lydia's actions would have disgraced the entire family. And they would all be shunned by anyone respectable for it. So Lizzie assumes that Darcy's silence and abrupt exit was to distance himself from her. In reality, he felt guilt that he never made Wickham's character known and he wanted to protect Lizzie from being disgraced by her sister. So he left so he could solve the matter as quickly as possible.

Hats off to Jane Austen. This scene is brilliantly conceived. It ends with Darcy leaving without explaining his intentions, which are to track Wickham down, and prevent a scandal. But Lizzie naturally assumes that the news of Lydia's elopement has made Darcy determine that he can no longer marry her.

The blooper in this scene is Jane writing that her 'nieces and nephews' take up her time. The children are her cousins as they are the children of her mother's brother. Jane is not their aunt she is their first cousin.
@L1623VP
@L1623VP 2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure it's a blooper. I have a niece (26) whose first cousin has young children that she sees regularly. Even though those young children (1, 3, and 5) are actually her first cousins (once removed) because they are the children of her first cousin and not her sibling, those children still call her "Aunt" Sydney. At the same time, in Sense & Sensibility, the Dashwood girls refer to Fanny, the wife of their half-brother, John, as "Aunt Fanny" because she is so much older than them when in fact she is their sister-in-law. I've also noticed that the term "cousin" in certain Austen novels doesn't always mean a blood relation but is used almost as an endearment when referring to certain people. One example is in Sense & Sensibility how Edward Ferris is often referred to by Mrs. Dashwood and even John Dashwood as the Dashwood girls' "cousin" when in fact he is no blood relation at all to those girls, including Elena Dashwood who is in love with him. He is the brother of their sister-in-law, Fanny. How familial titles are used in Austen's books is very interesting and doesn't always refer to the literal connections we might assume today. The seemed more flexible back then.

Had Darcy been delayed a little longer, he would not have caught Lizzy and found out about Wickham’s actions. They would have left without telling Mr Darcy and he subsequently wouldn’t have helped and Elizabeth would never have tried to resume contact thinking that such a scandal would dissuade Mr Darcy.

I never understood why Lydia had to be saved after she eloped. The damage was done. They should have cut her off and save what was left of their reputation. I know at least two families that did so in similar circumstances. This was in the late nineties and early 2000s. I guess Austen's world was too different from our time now. The people I knew never spoke of their estranged daughters again, and would never wish to see them in person ever. Much too shameful, has to be kept hidden from relatives, neighbours and family friends. Really very shameful.
@Shoujofan
@Shoujofan 6 ай бұрын
Well, when you love your child, you try to help, save him/her. In that case, in the society Austen lived in, a lawful marriage would do to solve the problem. And cut relations would not save the honor of the others sisters, the book is clear about their fate. They would have even lower prospects of marriage if Lydia were seen by the society as lost.
